Reading the transcript on Rubin’s site the first thing that hit me was how well spoken Sandy is, compared to what we’re used to. Kudos there.

    I especially like this:

On saying payroll at $140 million-$150 million was higher than you’d like and the number Alderson would want to keep it in the future:

“At this point is there a specific number? No. You may know recent Mets history better than I. I don’t know if we’ve gotten this high in the past. One never wants to rest at one extreme or the other. My sense is that our payroll is a little higher this year than I would have liked to have been, but we are where we are. Whether that means we drop back in future years to some extent, I don’t know. But we will continue to expend money at very high levels and I think be among the highest payrolls in baseball.”

And hopefully, this puts all these speculative posts we’ve been reading about Reyes to rest:

On impact on re-signing Jose Reyes, or even to conduct negotiations given nebulous financial standing of organization:

“Again, perhaps naively, I don’t expect that this situation will be a hindrance in that regard. I fully expect that decision will be made as it would have been, in the best interest of the team on the field, and the best interest of the overall sort of financial health as well as baseball future of the Mets — as it would be with any other team.

“Again, I go back to the notion that if a potential financial issue exists, ownership is proactively addressing it. And at this point I don’t expect that any financial situation will inhibit negotiations with Jose.”

I like sandy. hard to believe there are some truly hard-core haters on MMO. I need to stay away from that place.

I don’t understand what there is to hate at this point unless your head is up your patoot. The guy has changed the teams course and has been consistent in his message. Now we need to be patient for the results. Why fire Minaya and keep the same plan?

And just as a reminder to all when it’s really time to fire Sandy I was the one who started the bandwagon in November. I hold the pitch fork and will let everyone know when it’s time to march.

Some on MMO are Omar apologists AND hate sabermetrics. Somehow this translates to not liking Alderson.

Hey, if RA Dickey thinks this franchise was good enough for him to sign with, it can’t be all bad:

Said Dickey: “I’ve played 14 one-year contracts, none of which have been guaranteed. When the opportunity arose to have some financial security from a family standpoint and also feel like I was treated fairly by not only the New York Mets as an organization but as a city, it made it very easy for me to want to return for more than just next year even. My goal at this point is to be the best bargain in baseball for the next three years. I mean, really. That’s my goal. To win championships, you really have to have an altruistic approach. I wasn’t out to break the bank from the get-go, and I know that if I want to be part of the solution here — which I do — giving some things up so to speak might help the collective good. I was willing to do that for this organization, and still am, and am glad again that I had the opportunity to go down a multi-year contract with these guys because it’s a place I feel is a good fit for my style of pitching and for what I think I can accomplish. I am confident about my ability, but a lot of times it has much more to do with other things.”
