I won’t dignify it with a hit (same for Rubin’s chat that mf4d mentioned), so i’m not gonna go search it out. what’d he say?

Just his opinion of Collins is negative because he does not command a room like HOF.

one of Michael Kay’s things is to absolutely criticize the Mets for not signing Bobby V because taht was his pick and if the Mets don’t agree it’s because they’re cheap and stupid.

WIth Rubin, he’s got the Mets winning 80, period. And only if all breaks right.
When someone called him out on it, he said something like ‘my sources inside’ claim the same thing. Then went on to say he was right about the 78 wins he predicted for last year.
Yeah….but the reason he predicted 78 last year was b/c of pitching. Which we all know was not the big problem.
He didn’t say, but I’m sure he’s got the 80 b/c of the pitching again. Now he’s got a point about the pitching but still….only one more win than last year?
And Yeah! I’m saved. The phones at WFAN studio in NY are ‘broke’ right now so no one can call in!

Does a writer’s opinion have to be the same as yours for it to merit your oh so valuable viewing time?
Are they not entitled to their informed opinion much in the same way that you are?
Does it make you a bad guy, and your “blog” not worthy of reading, because your opinions are different than theirs?
Ceetar

I don’t present my opinions as fact. And regardless, if I find a particular writer to have a negative slant or an opinion that often seems flawed, I’m sure as hell not going to read it.

2/1/2011-3:39pm at 3:39 pm (UTC -4)
If you are reading reporters’ predictions as statements of fact then I’m afraid the problem lies with your perception and not their “flawed” reasoning.
How well has your positive “slant” worked out in recent seasons?

Um…where did I imply that?
I just gave my opinion of what I think when I read some of his stuff.
He’s certainly entitled to his opinion about all things Mets. And I think I’m entitled not to like it.
That is all.
(Hey Wanny…is Rubin your cousin or something? LOL…..)

I never listen to any of these guys. and don’t read that much, unless it is linked here, or something interesting catches my eye on the spyder crawl.
but in response to wanny, and defense of MF and Ceetar, I always take their complaints to be about him and the way he presents opinions, not the opinion itself.
that is, being nasty/snarky/etc (iow negative) is the issue, not that he has a differing opinion.

Rubin also claimed to have some inside information about Wright’s feeling on not wanting to stay with the Mets:
‘Toward the tail end of the last regime, I was starting to become convinced that it was very possible because of all the dysfunction David Wright could ultimately finish his career elsewhere — that he’d just become fed up with it. I ran it by someone close to David, and he got the same sense. Once Sandy Alderson took over and things stabilized, I backed off that assessment a little. Now I don’t know again. I do think Wright has a far better chance long term to remain a Met than Jose Reyes. And I do think ownership and Alderson recognize what a blow it would be PR-wise if nothing else if Wright defects. My gut is that the Mets will always pay Wright like Jeter gets paid — a lot on ability, but also because of what it means to the franchise — and for that reason he will remain a Met long term. Then again, let’s see how dire the financial restraints become. He is under control for three more years, so there’s plenty of time.’

I wonder how long that one statement will take to get around the blogs? And what do you want to bet only the first 2 sentences get printed and not the entire comment?

Cool.
I’d much rather tune into this than the Francesa show. For the first time this off season, I’m torturing myself this afternoon as I tuned in. 25 minutes into it and I don’t know how long I’ll last.
Let’s see….he’s already attacked Sandy as ‘foolish’ for saying this Madoff scandal won’t impact Mets operations this year.
Now he’s going on and on about the ‘significantly less than $140 MIL’ Sandy mentioned going forward. ‘In a town where they should be competing with the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Phillies and the Dodgers, they’re going to cut their budget’?
I really don’t think I can hang around to hear the callers on this one.
That on the heels of reading Rubin’s Tuesday noon chat. Sorry for those that do like him but Rubin just annoys me to no end. It’s not that he isn’t on top of stories, or that he doesn’t report the facts – often in depth and before many – because he does. It’s just that snarky, defensive attitude that comes through just reading him – especially on these chats. I noticed these noon time chat reads are mainly where I got this opinion of him so maybe I should just avoid those too – lol.

He’s telling Yankee fans not to worry about the likes of Garcia, etc. They’re shopping at KMart right now looking for 5 wins early then they’ll just release them. If they need to, they’ll just do a block buster trade mid season. Next breath, he comes out with Johan could be available and since the Yankees have a multitude of great prospects could be a match made in heaven.

You know, it irks me that the Yanks view this as a throw away 5 wins (which is no sure thing), while the Mets would be considered to be leaning on Garcia for shoring up their busted rotation, or something along those lines. Just had to say that.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, did you see the Steve Phillips clip in defense of the Wilpons? He was almost over the top in his support of the franchise being completely innocent in knowing anything about this Ponzi scheme.

They did a pretty in depth job at exposing this Madoff stuff. Maybe naively, I’m gonna trust the law on this one and assume that if they didn’t find any evidence that the Wilpons knew, then they didn’t know.
Francesa was hilarious today. Kay was similar last night. And I’ve only caught about 15 minutes of each show, so either I’ve been lucky, or they ramble a lot.
It all comes down to the fact that these dolts think it’s all about spending money. money equals wins. it doesn’t. it’s bad business. it’s bad strategy, and when you’re already bursting at the seams, spending more money for less quality is not the answer. sorry guys, go ahead and kill the Mets if you want, and I’ll just laugh as they’re beating up teams you think they’re clearly worse than.

As far as the Yankees, we all know money means nothing to them. The other 29 teams don’t operate they way they do. How many years now have they paid out that luxury tax?
And I won’t doubt for one NY minute should Pujols ever hit FA, the Yankees will be right there bidding. They’ll figure out later where they play who.
Ceetar
2/1/2011-2:01pm at 2:01 pm (UTC -4)
That’s iffy. the Yankees do appear to be ‘close’ to a budget. Didn’t push the extra 5-10 million they needed to get Lee. Damon and Matsui a couple of years ago and instead shuffling things around. They’ve kept Kei Igawa in the minors for years because it would cost them an extra 2 or so million in money to move him. (via the luxury tax)
All teams have a budget (Steinny was nver spending out of his own pocket, and gee, wasn’t he only spending a third of it since he doesn’t own all the team?) and it’s all based on revenue. The Mets revenues are down, but as much as Alderson said he’d like to lower payroll, he did have the caveat about attendence in there if you read it. Make smart moves so revenues go up, and then use that revenue to continue to make smart moves. Invest positive money instead of throwing money at a problem and hoping it returns it’s investment.

just go on a media blackout. You will be happier. and include the commentators at most sites too (there are some really stupid people among the Met fan base).
I honestly can’t be the only person that does not really care about the owners of the teams I root for. I feel no need to trust them (hell, I feel no need to ever here from them).
Are they “liars”? I don’t think so, if you really pay attention to anything they said. Optimistic sometimes? Sure. Had to make changes to plan when circumstances change? of course, that is normal in business.
but even if they are, well, so what? Don’t listen. Watch the team play games.
it is silly to me to see talking heads with no real knowledge of the facts, and no background in finance, making all these grand assumptions about the situation, and claiming that they have to sell as some kind of moral issue.
will they have to sell? Maybe, if they need the money. Should they sell because they ran into some problems, and the fans “lost trust” in them? Of course not.

I couldn’t care less. the further removed from the playing field, the less qualified I feel to judge their ‘performance’ and the less I care about it.
I don’t listen to much of the media stuff, but I do want to hear the jibber jabber, I just wish it was more team related. I only listen in the car.

The only correlation though is the owners do have a direct impact on the product we’re watching on the field. The smarter a GM they hire, hopefully the better team we’re watching.
The better the budget (notice I didn’t say ‘more’), the more opportunity to get the players needed to help us win.

2/1/2011-4:05pm at 4:05 pm (UTC -4)
that is what I said yesterday I want from an owner.
1) hire a smart person to run the operation, set reasonable organization goals/standards, and let them do their job.
2) supply a reasonable amount of resources to support item 1
and, that is about it. No need to ever say anything to the fans.

my primary hope is that the mets have a big year in wins and make the playoffs.
But, if you tell me that they are locked in for 82 wins, but I can have 1 other wish for the team, it will be that Murphy becomes the regular 2B, and does well in the field while having a huge year at bat, and challenges for the title of best 2B in the NL.
why? Because I can’t stand a couple of guys on other sites that seem to have made it their mission to spread the gospel that Murphy is a horrible athlete and a butcher that can never, ever, play 2B better than my grand ma, and she is dead.
