I hate Bernie Madoff so let’s talk about Baseball. Spring Training is 9 days away so here’s your question: Are you satisfied with the all off-season acquisitions from the Mets? Which pick-up will have the greatest impact on the Met 2011 season?

I’d be lying if I said I was totally satisfied. But with that said , I understand that there very few trades to be made and other than Lee – who we had no shot in hell to sign , the free agent market was overwhelming. But I commend Sandy by putting together a team that if all breaks right could be a mid to high 80 game winner so we shall see.

All Madoff aside, yes. The payroll is extremely high with no signs of flexibility. The plan of signing high priced free agents and filling in the gaps with question marks failed. Sandy is moving forward with a plan and thankfully he has not deviated. As fans we need to be focused on what actions that are taken late 2011 and beyond to see if this “plan” is horsepoo or not. In the mean time just sit back.
BTW here is my answer to the Sunday question that I assumed would appear : GB: 27 Pitt: 22. Yea I’m predicting a safty, why? because who the hell knows…

I’m going to go for one of those whacky scores that can come out of these games so: Green Bay 22 Steelers 15.
I usually could care less if the Steelers win or loose and just accept that they are really good at what they do but I really dislike Rothelsberger. He’s scum as far as I’m concerned, very talented scum but scum none the less. If he was a baseball player he’d be a Yankee.

I think I would compare him more to a Philly than Yankee. Luckily he’s not so I can still like him.

Considering the mess that Omar left the Mets in and the plain terrible FA market I am content with the off-season moves made. What I think will be more telling of Sandy’s abilities will be what moves he makes during the season and if he has the foresight to make moves that will not only keep us competitive for this year but ultimately start to break down the wall left by Omar.

I’m with TRS in saying that considering the FA market, I’m content with the FA acquisitions. I still wish that he was more involved in the trade market (Garza anyone?). What frustrated (or i should say, still does) is that he did not jettison Ollie and Castillo yet. More so Ollie. I know, Ceetar, I know that it is best to see if they have the fire/grit/ability to win spots come Spring training, but considering the Madoff Mess (patent pending), it would be best to eliminate all other distractions to the team. New Mgr, New GM, some new faces, some healthy faces, a nice competition at 2B, as well as for the 5th spot in the rotation… and we’ll be chatting about Ollie and Luis. yuk.
Pittsburgh 70, Green Bay 7.

LOL. That would be a shocker.
What the Cubs sent for Garza would have been difficult to match with our farm system the shape that it’s in.
As for Ollie and Luis, the fan part thinks that yeah get rid of the distraction. However, ultimately I don’t want Sandy making decisions based on what I or the fans want. I at this point trust Sandy so if they are still in camp it is because he believes they still have enough value to the Mets in some way even if it’s through saving 500K in a trade.

Question 1: Yes & No, so I guess no. Yes on Starting Pitching since no way, thankfully, we were going to be in on the Lee sweepstakes and I like the high risk high reward signings of Young, Capuano and “re-upping” Dickey. OK – let the jokes on that last comment begin…
No on the pen: there were plenty of low cost options out there aside from the multitude of guys they signed. While I’m OK with the “throw these guys against the wall” and see who sticks for some filler I would have liked at least 1 real signing to bolster the pen as a setup guy as in a Dotel or Fuentes. I think that investment would have been wise and if the season goes south those type players are almost always highly tradeable to contenders and would have provided a return one way or another.
Question 2: Which pick up wil have the greatest payoff: well the Manager Collins of course since he’s pulling the strings. OK, OK that’s not what you meant. I’ll go Capuano since he can start or be in the pen. Although a close second is Willie Harris to a milb deal just to keep him from making highlight real catches against us – j/k.
Oh, LGM!

I am ok with not spending a lot of money on the pen. To me that is a waste of money and perhaps Sandy believes the same. However, because of the current issues I see why some would point to that as proof of financial issues.

For me hindsight is now 20/20.
For the most part, I was O.K. with Sandy’s off season plan. I would have preferred a more solid SP but figured the budget ‘cap’ they had to spend this off season had something to do with the type of signings. Plus, I assumed Sandy did not want to part with any good prospects yet in a trade for a more established SP.
Now….I believe we’re seeing that we should be lucky they spent any money this off season. So based on that, looking like they did the best they could with the $$ they had to work with, I’ll cross my fingers it was enough. Very well could be.
My only knock is not discussing an extension with Reyes when the season ended. I’ve heard Sandy say he wants to see him play first. I heard Jose say once the season starts he doesn’t want to discuss an extension. Based on that, as well as the current state of the Mets finances, I’m betting Jose is gone.

overall I am satisfied, having accepted the payroll cap that left little room. I like everyone brought in, and think he filled the needs.
for the pen, there wasn’t really anyone that wasn’t looking to close (or get money like it) that I really think is guaranteed to be better than what Sandy picked up. I can’t say for sure who will step up and take which role, but i think there are enough good arms to make it a solid pen. I think tankersly is going to be the big surprise there.
the one major gaffe IMO is not having tried to lock up Reyes at a reasonable (fair) extension as off season job 1.
part II: capuano and hairston.
