The Star-Ledger is reporting, based on a New York Times piece, that Donald Trump has apparently been contacted by the Wilpons regarding his interest in buying at least part of the Mets.

Mr. Trump, despite his huge media presence and the many unquestionably beautiful structures bearing his name, has a very, very mixed record when it comes to actual success.
Would this be akin to a George Steinbrenner or more like a Daniel Snyder?
Stay tuned.

With one line you just changed my mind on Trump owning the team.

I just ran her to post a link on this:

WTF. I love Trump but I don’t know if I would want him as an owner. If there is a circus tied to the owner I think I would rather see Cuban. Does Trump even know anything about baseball. What about the USFL, that was a disaster (If you have a chance to see the ESPN 30-30 on the USFL I highly recommend it).

I would hope he’s only doing it to get his name attached to a major sports team.
Hopefully he’d just tell Sandy, “Listen, I like baseball, it’s a great sport to put the Trump stamp on…but I don’t know **** about it. You have a $200M budget, make me a winner.”

“and the many unquestionably beautiful structures bearing his name”
If you’re referring to Ivanka…spot on.

Please…no.
How many times has Trump declared bankruptcy involving some of his holdings – such as the Trump Plaza in AC?
He had financial problems for a good portion of the 90s.
Plus Trump Entertainment Resorts filed bankruptcy in ’09.
He’s got his fingers in too many pies and he’s sometimes over extended, thereby using bankruptcy as a way out.
Like I said…IMO – no, thanks.

like MF said, if you want to avoid a circus, and not worry about the owners financial house of cards, trump is not your man.
somehow he ended up personally rich, while most of his holdings (and investors) ended up in BK.
frankly, he sounds more like having a Madoff buy the team!
and of course, he would just replace Jeffy with Ivanka as COO.
but, maybe it would be fun having the Mets featured on his dumb show. Winner gets to be GM?
now, if he wants to get his name out there, just outbid Citi for the naming rights, and we can all avoid going to Trump Field!

My thinking on this financial issue is this. Most rumors suggest that IF anyone is going to buy the Mets, they would want to buy the majority share (if not 100%) of the team. And IMO Wilpons won’t sell the team until they absolutely have to sell the team. That means that this circus will go on until the trial is over and the budget will be tight.

He’d have to sell all ownership in his casinos… Or they have to let Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame STAT!

no thanks. I want a silent owner who will allow baseball men to make the decisions.

Well, since we don’t have that now (see Boy, Jeffy) then we may as well have The Donald’s bankroll too.

Trump is too much of a personality to run the team. I want a Woody Johnson type owner. He pays the salaries and he keeps out of the headlines.

An ex-coworker grew up where Trump’s dad had offices, in Brooklyn at the time, and he told me that while he and the rest of the kids would be playing the Donald would be in his dads office crunching numbers, learning accounting, and other general business skills at the side of his dads desk. Mind you, this is when the Donald was like 7 years old, and he wanted to be there on his own. That visualization of him always stuck in my head.
I wouldn’t want him as owner, maybe it’s a real estate magnate owner thing, but he is unique.
