Jason “Izzy” Isringhausen, of Generation K fame, has been signed to a minor league deal by the Mets. The deal includes an invite to major league Spring Training camp. Izzy last pitched for the Mets in 1999, before before a top-tier closer for the Athletics and Cardinals for 8 straight seasons. However, he hasn’t been effective in the major leagues since 2007, and is presumably recovering or has recovered from TJ surgery performed in 2009, so it’ll be an uphill battle if Izzy is to see any playing time with the big league squad this season.
From the back of Isringhausen’s 1994 Topps baseball card (the featured image of this story): “A phenomenal find in the 44th round of the 1991 draft, “Izzy” has exploded into the upper tier of Mets’ pitching prospects. Though he can hit 90 with his loose-armed fastball, it is his curve that serves as his strikeout pitch.”
