Sign of things to come? Cliff Lee was already sidelined last week with a side strain.

Hat tip to Metsblog and The Phillies Zone.   According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Cliff Lee had some pretty short side throwing sessions last week due to some soreness in his side.

Cliff Lee reported the soreness to the Phillies prior to the opening of Spring Training.  Apparently, Lee did this when he was throwing at his home in Arkansas.  “We’re probably being a little cautious with him, but he feels great now and should be fine.”  Ruben Armro Jr. stated.  He was shut down for a week but is still on schedule.

these things happen. I know there is a tendancy to assume that every met will break down, while other players never do, but that obviously isn’t true.

Lee has had some assorted injuries over the last few years (back included, never good for a pitcher). Oswalt got shut down for september a couple years back for the same reason (and surgery was being debated.

These are aging (by SP standards) guys, with a lot of miles on them.

Hell, most people don’t realize that there was a real good possibility that if the phils had beaten the giants, Halladay would have had to miss the WS. He pulled a groin in his last NLCS outing

I knwo someone with a 1991 Civic with about 350,000 miles on it. still runs good. But if it blew up tomorrow, no one would really be surprised at those miles!

one reason I was hoping they would trade blanton for just salary relief (no good prospects back). 1-2 injuries to the SP, and that team is looking decidedly more mortal. The offense already does, without a lot of rebounding from older, injury prone guys.

Didn’t Lee have something similar the beginning of last year?

      1. stickguy

        yes he did.

Didn’t Lee start last season off with a similar injury? (abs, oblique, back, something?) And we saw how that worked out all season. Say that the Phillies are “getting old and could fall apart from age any time” every year will eventually pay off for whoever says it, but you still have to be quite the optimist to think they could have enough injuries/declines to keep them from cruising to another NL East title. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves with this wishful thinking. Just enjoy baseball being back and the likelihood that the Mets might be able to finally play decent fundamental baseball again.

Last year the Phillies, Yankees, Rays, Braves, RedSox and Rangers were beset by injuries. Of the group only the RedSox did not make the playoffs (and they still won 89 games). So yes teams other than the Mets suffer injuries but when all is said and done it comes down to the quality and quantity of your initial talent level and the quality of the role players.

And your overall roster depth and quality of your GM and his available mid-season budget. Something that’s all been questionable for the Mets for a long time…

I must say, that both Nova and Gate’s avatars do not match my perceived view of them. I’m not sure what picture would, but, anyhow, the thought passed my mind so I’m typing it here.

What, my pic doesn’t look bitter and angry enough? :)

I almost got to experience hot folgers thru the nostrils. Thanks for that. Heh. And at Gate, yes, much better. Helps in the whole theme of spring training, new beginnings, etc. :)

If nothing else, the phils are proving that the BB Karma gods don’t really exist. or at least they aren’t doing their jobs.

Rollins now is spouting that they are a lock for 100 wins, expect to be having a championship parade, and their real interest for the year is chasing the Mariners record of 116.

I hate philly, and philly fans (who, although they are mostly the same people, have actually become more obnoxious and annoying than the eagles fan version). They need a serious dose of hard reality, and soon!

sorry, living down here has gotten to me. I need to get out.

Many years ago when I lived in Horsham, PA the Phillies were a woebegone team so the fans and players were not as arrogant and obnoxious as they are now. I must admit if I still lived there I would feel exactly as you do. Tough time to be a Mets fan living in Philly land.

      I hear you on this.

Rollins shouldn’t count his chickens before they’re hatched. It’s a long season.

Last year the Philly fans were talking about the post season roster in May. They’ve probably moved that up already and are discussing now in ST.

on another note, MLB network is doing a rundown show on the top SSs in the game today.

reyes just came in at #4.

and should have been #3. 1-2 were fine (hanly then tulo), but they put the carcass formerly known as Jeter #3!

I truly believe that those Mets fans that want Reyes gone are totally misguided. I believe he will be very difficult to replace and is essential to the future prosperity of this ballclub. Of course that all hinges on him remaining healthy over the next few years.

      1. njstuckintx

I think you hit the nail on the head. Its not so easy to replace the 3rd best shortstop in the league.

        1. TRS86

Actually I don’t think that says enough. If you look at some of the junk below him replacing the 3rd best is not that difficult. Replacing a guy like Reyes is much more difficult. SS is just not a good position after the top 3-4 in each league.

          1. oleosmirf

im against trading Reyes. He’s much more valuable than anything we can get in return and even in a bad year is better than Ruben Tejada or whomever we replace him with will ever be.

          2. metsfan4decades

            Agreed.

As an aside if you’re interested in the accuracy of the rumor mill take a look at this image from yahoo on the Carmelo Anthony trade rumors.

Notice that Yahoo Sports’ top two headlines were “Anthony to meet with Nets” and “Nets not meeting with Anthony.”

      Haha!!

What a pitiful job the media’s done with this whole thing.
