Beltran Has Tendinitis in LEFT Knee, To Miss More Time

Bad news folks.

After starting and eventually sliding home to score just a few days ago, Beltran was out of the lineup today for his second straight game. After first being told that he would play in a simulated game instead, we now know that he will not participate in the simulated game either.

However, the news gets considerably worse after that. It’s now being reported that Carlos has tendinitis in his left knee and is shut down for (at least) 4-5 more days. Why is this considerably worse? Because his left knee was supposedly his “good” knee.

So, who’s in right?

Update: Patrick Flood makes a great point on twitter – that tendinitis often occurs in an individual’s healthy knee (if the other is not) due to overcompensation, and that Beltran had tendinitis in his left knee toward the end of last season. This doesn’t make me feel much better, but it’s certainly better than no good news.

This is a comment I’ve been dreading to make, and it makes me sick to my stomach to post it, but it’s true… The Mets have been my #1 team to root for by a WIDE margin my entire life, and they certainly still are. However, this gap has been closing for the past couple seasons (as the Knicks become exciting, the Rangers continue to compete, and the Giants do the same), and I’m worried it will close further after this coming season.

I just think without Santana and Beltran this isn’t a team which can realistically compete. We could have the equivalent of rookies at C, 2B, RF, and sort of 1B. And half our rotation is basically unknown, not to mention that we don’t even know who most of our relievers will be. I’m really worried. :(

  2. wannybackstra

The fact that he agreed so quickly to move to RF is also an indication to me that his right knee still isn’t so hot either. While some spoke about this like it was such a good thing, I immediately thought it was a bad sign of his health. I’m not expecting much out of Carlos this season, unfortunately.

    1. TRS86

I expect when he is in the game he will produce. Shocking.

As for how many games. 80-110?

      1. stickguy

        about 100 sounds right.

and interestingly enough, one of the columnists in the philly paper today asked the same question about Utley (if you see the over/under on games played at 100, what do you bet?. He took the under.

        1. Ceetar

I tell you what, the dropoff from Beltran to what we’ll get from RF without him, especially if it’s 60 games instead of 30, is much smaller than the dropoff from Utley to Wilson Valdez (or whoever)

          1. wannybackstra

Yes, Scott Hairston and Willie Harris are practically all-stars.

          2. Ceetar

Yes, because that’s what I said.

Harris is a bum, hopefully he doesn’t make the team. but Hairston and Evans and mabye Duda and F-Mart can contribute positively. More than Wilson Valdez.

          3. kingman 26

Yes, Nick Evans and Duda might combine to hit .400 if we add their BAs together.

Ever onward goes the march of ______ .

          4. TRS86

I am glad you can predict that. I sure can’t.

          5. TRS86

To me I am more in the every game is a blessing mode with Beltran. I never expected more than 100 games tops.

          6. kingman 26

            I don’t really disagree.

I just think it is time to move on.

Enough of the injuries; just really sick of it.

Would rather see FMart and Duda.

          7. Prismo

            That means absolutely nothing Ceetar.

            Jeez, talk about spin.

          8. Ceetar

            ?

          9. kingman 26

Harris and Hairston are even better than top-ten MLB outfielder Pagan!!

            Woo-hoo!!

          10. TRS86

You seem a bit snarky today Kingman. Season already getting to you bud?

          11. kingman 26

            Nah; sorry Chief.

But Beltran’s injuries are, to me, a downer that just turns the clock back and reminds me that we have at least a year to go before the nightmare ends.

          12. TRS86

How many games did you expect Beltran to play this year?

          13. kingman 26

I’d say 120–125; half for us and half for whoever we trade him to.

          14. Prismo

Kingman – how many of those are simulated?

            ;)

          15. kingman 26

            LOL!

In the late 1980s, a fringe Met player, I cannot remember who, was asked by a reporter how it felt to go 5-for-5 in a simulated game.

            His answer?

He said “Maybe I’ll make the simulated all-star team.”

            Classic.

  3. Mr North Jersey

Asked if observers should be concerned with Beltran not playing in two games since serving as DH on Sunday, especially considering Beltran had to shut down his 2010 season with a week to go because of chronic right knee issues, Collins said about panicked fans: “They can say what they want. Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. But they’re not here. We’ve got to do what’s right and what’s smart. We can’t get this guy ready so the fans think he’s going to play. We’ve got to get him ready to play.”

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/16301/no-simulated-game-either-for-beltran

“We can’t get this guy ready so the fans think he’s going to play. We’ve got to get him ready to play.”

I agree with Collins that quote goes without saying.

    1. wannybackstra

Wait… was that Adam Rubin reporting Collins’ optimistic view? There he goes spinning the news again!

      1. TRS86

LOL, here he comes to save the day.

        1. Prismo

          Mighty Mouse?

          1. kingman 26

Take away the word “mighty” and you then have a fine appellation for most of the writers quoted here.

  4. oleosmirf

im not concerned b/c Beltran can roll out of bed after not playing for 6 months and still be one of the best hitting OF in the game.

    1. TRS86

Very true. It’s just much to early to speculate really. There is a lot of time before opening day. And really say he does not play the first week or two? So?

      1. Prismo

Two weeks is about 7% of the season.

        LOL “so?”

        1. TRS86

Really? With Beltran if it took two more weeks to get him more ready? That so is not a big deal at all. Especially those first 2 weeks.

          1. Prismo

You’re right, because games in the first 2 weeks only count half as much as games in the final 2 weeks!

          2. TRS86

Again, not the point. Did you think Beltran was playing 162 games?
What is 8-10 games in the scheme of Beltran’s season? If he was not ready to start the season and we rush him we might lose much more than those 8-10 games.

          3. Prismo

When did I say anything about rushing him? It’s not at all about that. It’s about how many games he’s going to play. Okay, he misses 8-10 off the bat. How many will he miss the rest of the season? You really think he’ll still start 90% of the games (that’s probably what it would be if he’s actually healthy) the rest of the season?

          4. TRS86

Nope. My point is that in the scheme of Beltran’s season the first 8-10 regular season games are not that important. How many would he have played in anyway? 5 at most?

If he is not ready by opening day and takes a couple of more weeks but is MORE ready then and is able to play more because of it… great.

          5. Ceetar

On the other hand, 3 of them are against the Phillies and count ‘double’.

          6. TRS86

            Uh…. ok.

  5. stickguy

I am concerned, and not, at the same time.

I expected already that he would have to be nursed along, essentially being a part-time player (maybe 120 games in the field, another 10 PH, and some DH gigs). And that he likely would need a r&R period during the year. Really he is shot physically, and they were going to have to nurse him through the season.

But, like Oleo said, his bat looks more than ready. Last year, he looked like crap when he came back. So from that standpoint, even getting the last 2 weeks of ST games could easily be enough to get ready.

Not that worried either about him in the OF. He is so good that he should hopefully adapt quickly to RF.

now, being his left knee (the good one) is probably encouraging, as long as this really is a minor ST type of ache/pain, and they are being overly cautious (as they should).

of course, it could be like the utley situation too.

who knows, but again, I am tired of the drama. Just play, or leave. one or the other. stop toying with us!

    1. Prismo

This is terrible for me to say, and probably against the betterment of the team…but I almost wish we just got news that Beltran would be out the whole season so we could MOVE ON.

      1. Prismo

(I don’t really mean that, I’m just sick of all the speculation – not just with Beltran, but ongoing with various team issue for the past couple years)

        1. Ceetar

I understand what you mean. I feel bad for Beltran, I feel sad. It’s also sad to see great players struggle against age and their bodies and injury.

I doubt this changes anything, as Patrick Flood pointed out, he only missed one game with the same issue last September. Yes, they’ll have to rest him. Put Evans and Hairston out in RF a couple of games. I don’t think there’s any doubt Beltran should get all 9 DH spots this year. Keep him healthy by not playing him needlessly in spring, let him still work on his swing, and save the strain for the season. I think you’d like to try to get him to 130-140 games, including those 9 DH. That’s ~22 games off, or nearly one a week.

        2. kingman 26

          Prismo, I agree 100%.

  6. metsfan4decades

I remember the reports end of last year about his good knee giving him a problem. If I remember correctly, that’s the reason he sat out the last week or so.

So where’s the poll on who plays more games this season: Beltran or Chipper?

  7. kingman 26

    I am with Prismo.

Enough of it; enough of all of it.

The same crap with the same players, year in and year out.

One more year of Beltran and Slappy, and endless gimpiness and injuries, but probably several more with Johan.

It is going to be another long, mediocre year, but the bright spots will be the kids.

Hopefully FMart is finally ready to play RF every day when Beltran is on the DL.

I am ready to vomit at hearing about Beltran’s and Johan’s and everyone’s injuries.

  8. Prismo

Folks, just to calm everyone down I want to point out that the drop in playing time for Beltran from 140 games to 80 games isn’t nearly as bad as the drop in quality from a gourmet hamburger to a McDonald’s burger. I hope that makes you all feel better.

    1. Ceetar

which gourmet hamburger are we talking about here?

      1. Prismo

I don’t know. The one that gourmet burger bistro makes down the street, it costs $10 for a burger. Yep.

        1. Ceetar

          chuck, sirloin?

          1. Prismo

            It’s the chuck, it’s a hamburger not a steak.

          2. Ceetar

At least it’s not Burger King.

          3. Mr North Jersey

Hey, I love me my flame broiled burgers.

            ;-)

    2. kistics

      I like McDonald’s burger…. like their fries better though…

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Here you go.

        McDonalds French Fries
        Burger King Flame Broiled Burger
        Wendys Chicken sandwich

        1. kingman 26

Ever have In N Out Burgers?

          1. kistics

I never had… are they even around in east coast?

          2. kingman 26

I think they are only in California, Arizona, and Nevada; maybe a few in some other W/SW states.

They have a very limited menu, and everything is made fresh; nothing is frozen. Fresh real meat, freshly cut potatoes; etc.

For fast food, by far the best burgers and fries out there.

And I love burgers and fries.

  9. metsfan4decades

Rubin’s got a post up with some Beltran quotes:

    http://proxy.espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/16315/beltran-speaks-in-psl

Seems like the bad knee feels fine and the good knee is giving him problems due to overcompensating.

They can put a man on the moon. Why can’t they find a cure – or better yet a preventative vaccine for arthritis????? It would sure make my day……

  10. TRS86

“If I am good to go and it doesn’t bother me, I would love to play in the outfield. I would love to leave spring training playing the outfield some games. I need to get used to that too. My right one feels great. I have no complaints, and actually I’m not even icing my right one. I’ve been icing my left one since we started the running program.”

    1. Ceetar

He’s not icing the right one? duh, he’s been overcompensating and pushing the left one too hard! That’s the problem! ;-)

    2. Mr North Jersey

The problem i have with this quote is that his right one has yet to be tested yet with him playing the OF on a regular basis.

That the right one feels great means very little to me until I see how it holds up after playing the field consistently.

      1. TRS86

Considering he has been doing the running and conditioning up until this point I am not that concerned about playing the OF. One would assume the “conditioning activities” consist of more than running in a straight line.

        1. Mr North Jersey

And yet with all that running and conditioning he still has not felt fit to play the OF.

You may not be concerned but until I see him playing the OF on a regular basis I will be concerned as to how the knee will respond.

          1. TRS86

I guess it just goes back to the how many games did you expect question.

          2. Mr North Jersey

For you maybe but for me it was about how will the knee respond once he starts playing the field on a consistent basis?

          3. wannybackstra

Not sure what to expect from him in the OF when he does actually play. He looked limited in CF last year on one bad peg and now has two. And you know he’s concerned too if he asked out of CF.

  11. metsfan4decades

and reading through Rubin’s chat at 1230, if Beltran goes on the DL, he sees FMart taking his spot in RF.

    1. kistics

I would rather have Harris or Hairston’s defense over FMart…

      1. Prismo

Let’s face it, Mets probably aren’t going anywhere this season. Playing Harris or Hairston is pointless. Might as well let FMart or Duda or whoever get the playing time if Carlos is out.

        1. kistics

That’s a good point. But opposite can be true. FMart or Duda can be busts and lose any value that they had built up.

        2. njstuckintx

          agreed.

  12. metsfan4decades

Ollie’s competition in the early innings on the mound for Houston is Figgy.

  13. kistics

Stupid Knees….. why do we have them…

    1. TRS86

Because the chair business would fold (unlike our legs).

      1. kistics

        good point…

      2. kingman 26

That is a really excellent answer!

  14. Prismo

Ollie starts the first with a single and then a walk.

    Byebye.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yes, I see Ollie is already in mid season form.

    2. Prismo

End of 1st: 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 earned runs, no strike outs.

Stick a fork in Ollie, he’s gone.

      1. metsfan4decades

Someone is reporting his velocity was over 90 – and he still gave up 3 runs with a walk?

        1. kingman 26

If his velocity was over 90, after his last start not even hitting the upper 80s, he must have had gale-force winds at his back.

        2. Prismo

Rubin said his FB ranged from 85-88mph

If I had to hazard a guess I’d say he knew how important this start was and he was overthrowing.

          1. metsfan4decades

Could very well be. Either way, didn’t look like it helped him much.

          2. kingman 26

In the Cards game, he was throwing 84–86 and looked like garbage.

      2. kistics

        NICE! Go Ollie!

  15. njstuckintx

Can I ask what people realistically thought they’d get out of Beltran this year? And 2 prospects is not the answer i’m looking for here.

    1. Prismo

Before the “news” today, I figured maybe 100 starts. I thought he’d need at least 1 day off per week, and 1-2 DL stints.

After the news today, I’m thinking 80 starts, if we’re lucky.

But what do I know. :)

    2. metsfan4decades

      LOL..
Before he showed up to ST, I thought 120 games was a fair assessment. Now I’m lowering that. I’m not even sure right now how many trips he might make to the DL.

      1. njstuckintx

I myself was hoping for 120, but I’m more inclined to 90-ish now. I just hope they do the “rest him, but no put him on the DL” thing like in times past, wasting a spot on the roster.

        1. metsfan4decades

Agreed. Might as well put him on the DL so we can get a chance to see what the prospects look like out there.

    3. kistics

I was looking to get out 2 prospects out of Beltran… :P

      1. njstuckintx

at this point, including the new news of injury and a fans over-reacting playing into this, I’d be happy for 1 prospect at this point. or even a ‘done for the season, collect insurance money’. But I have a vague inclination that his contract wasn’t insured or couldn’t be? Tell me i’m wrong please.

  16. stickguy

at this point, 100 starts in the OF and other 20 GPs (DH and PH) would be a windfall out of him (assuming he is around the full year).

And like Prismo said earlier, just get this over with. No more of this day to day suspense and breath holding. If he is going down, just do it now and be done with it so we can all move on.

plus, say he had to get surgery tomorrow and was out for the year. Then they would have certainty, and would look for a more “real” solution in RF (Hairston/harris is a stop gap at best). F mart, Duda, someone else? Not sure, but at least we could move on and find out.

and if nothing else, after his week to rest and let the knee cool off, just buy a big bottle of advil and send him out there. Yeah, it is going to be sore, a lot, but that is the new reality for him. Either suck it up and play through the pain, or retire now. Carlos is never going to be pain free for an extended period again!

He can have until 3/14 too. Settle the 2B competition (final 2 guys) by then, and either send carlos to RF most every day, or name someone else the starter.

I don’t care if it hurts his feelings, let beltran be the 4th/5th OF. Some PH, 1-2 starts a week, whatever.

    1. metsfan4decades

I’m thinking that Carlos starts the season on the DL.
5 days rest. 3 weeks left in ST after that. I doubt that’s enough time to get him out there in RF and get acclimated.

  17. kistics

    Listening to Astros announcers.

They had positive view on Ollie’s outing today despite the rough 1st inning. He bounced back well and his last FB was clocked at 89mph.

    1. njstuckintx

maybe they’d be interested in him…

      1. kistics

        Hmm… Figgy or Ollie…. hmmm…

    2. stickguy

he sucked overall. Be gone with him.

more importantly, are the Mets planning to field any kind of offense this year? So far, they look worse than last year or 2009!

      1. metsfan4decades

No hits for my boy Wright yet…..

Lost 30 1 run deficit games last year. I certainly hope we’re not watching for that one big hit again all year.

        1. njstuckintx

He’s just saving them hits for the regular season!

          1. stickguy

he should spend more time working on his hitting, and not his bowling.

      2. kistics

We’re screwed.. Wright is like 0 for 40.

        1. stickguy

0-41 now. But at least his Ks are in mid season form!

unless you consider it a good sign that he didn’t flail and fish at a ball down in (below?) the zone?

  18. kistics

    Emaus error costs a run

    1. stickguy

does not seem like he has done anything so far to earn the 2B job.

wait until the last possible 2nd, when the Jays have their 40 man full, and then try to send him down. Possible that they won’t want to release anyone to take him back.

  19. stickguy

after seeing him live for the first time, O’conner was pretty impressive. Could make them say Pedro who?

Tank and Byrdak haven’t done much either, have they?

K Rod, Parnell, Buckholz, carrasco, O’conner, Beato, Izzy?

    1. metsfan4decades

Think about O’Conner is he has almost the same era in his splits. Think lefty/right hitting like .250 off him. He certainly looked good today.

Murph making a case for himself there with a double and nice slide scoring on the single.

  20. Ceetar

Here is a statement from Carlos Beltran:

I felt a little discomfort in my left knee last week. I spoke to the doctors today. They advised me to just give it a rest for a couple of days. I can hit and do everything, but back off the running part of it. I feel fine. I think I just overcompensated from all the work I did on the other knee and I just need to give it a little break.

  21. metsfan4decades

Cory Vaughn, who looks about 12 years old BTW…just hit a shot outta the park. This just after Kevin B. is singing his praises on his young career so far.

Vaughn ties it up with that 2 run HR too. Murph on the 2nd with a double.
Gotta love some of these young kids.

    1. njstuckintx

      Go Big Murph!

    2. kistics

These split squad games are great that we can see all these young prospects in action. Can’t wait to go home and watch the game.

      1. metsfan4decades

Except now they’re in extra innings, they’re running out of pitchers and #89 for the Mets is pitching. Kevin B. is still trying to find out just who that is. LOL….

        1. kistics

          It’s Omar Minaya

          1. metsfan4decades

LOL. Some 30 year old named Thayer, who gave up the go ahead run so Mets lose in the 10th.

Interesting game though, especially for the BP arms. O’Connor looked good, again. Izzy on back to back days, gave up that solo HR, but wasn’t that bad.

Cory Vaughn HR and Murph’s 2 doubles were the highlights. Ironically, Murphy has yet to get a double play ball chance out there at 2nd. He started the game at 3rd but was switched to 2nd midway through.

  22. kistics

This is from the MC blog

    tgalvin463 [Moderator] 30 minutes ago

Tomorrow it will be arranged that Ollie will take Sandy’s son Anthony out on the boat to go fishing. Ollie will explain to Anthony how to catch fish by reciting “Hail Mary.”

But at the last minute, Anthony will be called away and Ollie and Warthen will go fishing alone. Terry Collins will watch from the shore…..

    Great stuff..

This was a comment for “Warthen, Sandy & Collins will meet tomorrow about Ollie”

Thanks for this classic…my all-time favorite movie, and this was playing out like a movie in my head….right to the end, with Warthen standing up in the boat and Collins looking down back at the house….classic.

Same here… a gloomy day at the lake..

        What does this mean?

Ollie sleeps with the fishes now….

I can hear Taps playing in the background.

You have to feel for Ollie somewhat. Money aside, he’s lost whatever talent he had and he’ll need to be rethinking his life forward now – at a younger age than most.

However….I think he brought some of this on himself by not excepting that minor league assignment last year. From his comments after the game today, he still believes in himself (or maybe he’s deluding himself) and thinks this start today was good enough to warrant another start. He’s either a very, very good actor or he truly does not get what a ML starter needs to show to win a spot in a rotation.

Just rip the bandaid off quick in one motion. See ya Ollie, see ya Luis. I know it won’t happen but I can dream can’t I?

Too bad about Carlos, we’ll see what happens. Doesn’t sound good but hey it’s his good knee, you know, the one that was operated on before the other one. So sad, such a talent being betrayed by his wheels.

Two games today, split squads and guess who played in neither of those games? Castillo. I think that’s very telling.

O.K., I don’t have a twitter account but I do read the twitter feed on the left and occasionally read tweets from blog authors and the like. I just found out that Thole created a Twitter account. By his own admission, he said somewhere he has no idea what he’s doing. I had to take a look. Laughed right out loud at this tweet:

‘Anybody know How to follow Charlie sheen?’

Why in the world would anyone want to follow Sheen? He’s all over the place as it is, you can’t get away from him. Follow his tweets? I guess there’s some entertainment value in that for some…..

Charlie Sheen started tweeting about a week ago and there were like 500,000 followers in 2 hours (or something like that). So I think Thole’s tweet was in reference to that…

Seeing teams inquiring about Mike Cameron on the Sawx, how ironic would it be if the Mets were to swap Beltran for Mike. Cameron in RF wouldn’t be a bad thing. I guess Ortiz is still their DH so probably not a match there anyway but just thinking outside the box.
