Mets In The Papers

Once again it’s time to get your daily dose of TRDM’s Mets in the Papers.

Adam Rubin, “Virgin Islands’ Morris Opens Eyes”

Now, nine months after the 18-year-old Morris was selected in the 10th round of the 2010 draft, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander is quietly, and rapidly, emerging as one the Mets’ best pitching prospects.

Zach Berman, “Mets Utility Player Willie Harris is Hungry for a Roster Spot”

Willie Harris is still trying to make a team. It’s at the very core of his ethos, starting with the way he arrives in the clubhouse each morning, the way he watches the game on the bench each day, the way he plays when he’s summoned to enter a game.

Mike Puma, “Mets to Tab Unheralded Hernandez for Second Base”

Disenchanted with what he has seen from Luis Castillo, Daniel Murphy, Brad Emaus and Justin Turner this spring, manager Terry Collins is preparing to name Luis Hernandez the starter at second base.
Major League Baseball has placed restrictions on the resale of debt issued by its teams in a bid to protect the New York Mets from being squeezed by investors.
The willingness to ride along without a complaint from the likes of Reyes and David Wright, who also made the long trek, makes the job of first-year manager Terry Collins easier to handle. In his first spring with the Mets, Collins has changed policies, putting the high-priced and heralded talent on the bus.
Plenty of drama for your mama in Met land.  Case in point:
DPLennon Been away few days, but nothing changes w #Mets. Santana OK/not OK, new Castillo/Ollie twists by minute. Anyone in charge here?
Lennon is the winner of the Jackass of the Day Award, “Even with an overhaul of the front office, and a new manager, the team already is displaying the same indecision and chain-of-command issues that plagued the Omar Minaya/Jerry Manuel regime”.
I usually like Lennon and Steve Popper, who went a bit overboard with the Santana “Season in Jeopardy” article over the weekend.  It bothers me that even the “good guys” are joining the hate fest.  If the sports reporters are going to just speculate and make things up just to get the “depressed fan base” riled up, there’s no need for them and their propoganda reporting.

Well, have to give Lennon the jackass of the day award out of this bunch!

And maybe if the media wasn’t creating these non-stories, the team/player would not have to come out and discount them!

    1. CaseStreet

      Thanks for the award suggestion.

  2. TRS86

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner.

  3. kingman 26

Awarding a Jackass of the Day for the most inane drivel spewed each day by this tribe of irresponsible mediocrities is perhaps the most inspiring idea I have heard in quite a while.

THIS is a way to make me look forward to seeing what exaggerations, nonsense, and outright lies the bunch will make up each day.

    Fine work gentlemen.

    1. metsfan4decades

I second that. Hope this becomes a routine post.

  4. TRS86

As I ask the question here as well. IF Collins wants Hernandez to be his 2B and wants Castillo gone, then why does he keep filling out the card with Castillo at 2B and Hernandez on the bench?

    1. njstuckintx

      6 million reasons, actually.

    2. CaseStreet

Maybe Collins is trying to expose Castillo’s weakness … playing.

      1. stickguy

You point out an important thing to remember about ST. It is easier than the regular season. They play alternate games, only a few innings, no stress, no travel, etc. Plus, they all just came off a nice relaxing winter.

so hell yeah, Castillo should look as spry as he ever will. But do you really think that if he makes the starting line up, as the season goes along, he isn’t going to wear down and fall apart quickly?

        1. metsfan4decades

          I’d bet on it.
So could the plan be to send Murph to the minors to continue working out at 2nd and give the first 4-8 weeks to Castillo giving Murphy time?

  5. stickguy

ah, the old contract gets the PT angle.

In this case, i don’t think it matters, in that they won’t play castillo just because he gets paid the most. Unlike Bay, where it does matter (much bigger, and longer, deal). Not a chance that bay gets sent to the bench anytime soon, and he is not competing for a job, because he is considered part of the core, thanks to his contract.

The only way I can see the team (and it isn’t just Collins deciding who to play and when) giving castillo time at 2B (though to be fair, they are rotating) is that he has done enough so far to give a faint spark of hope that he might be tradeable after all. At least I hope so!

  6. metsfan4decades

Lennon I can take or leave. I don’t normally read many of his articles b/c you have to have a subscription to Newsday and that isn’t happening. Once in a while I come across a link though to the Mobile post link which shows the whole article.

Popper however, is one I usually avoid.

  7. oleosmirf

The Wilpons will not allow Castillo to be released if he is batting .300 in ST. It’s their money and there is no way Castillo gets released when he has the best numbers.

It doesn’t matter what Collins or Alderson want, there is no way they pay Castillo 6.25 mil to play for another organization when he is producing the best in ST. Same goes with Perez. If he does really well against LHP now that he is in the pen, he is going to be in the bullpen. Luckily for us, Perez isn’t going to be able to do that.

    1. stickguy

I just can’t get my head around this logic. The Wilpons have been owners for a long time. they understand how BB finances work (sunk costs). And they also know where revenue comes from.

putting the 2 together, do you honestly think they aren’t smart enough to know that they will make probably more money without Castillo, if it brings even a few more fans out to the park?

      1. oleosmirf

you and I might think he’s a sink cost, but the Wilpons do not considering his numbers are the best. How is he a sink cost if the ST numbers suggest Castillo is the most productive player. If Castillo were batting .150, i would agree with you but its hard to call a guy batting .300 with a .400 OBP a sink cost when the other options are batting .200 with no MLB experience or butchering easy ground balls and cutoff plays.

  8. stickguy

Here are the lineups for Tuesday night’s game between the Mets and Nats:

    Mets
    Jose Reyes, ss
    Luis Castillo, 2b
    Angel Pagan, cf
    David Wright, 3b
    Jason Bay, lf
    Ike Davis, 1b
    Willie Harris, rf
    Josh Thole, c
    Chris Young, rhp

I get nightmares seeing Castillo hitting 2nd. To me, that is even worse in this lineup than him being in it!

Slappy being the starting 2B will be bad. Him in the 2 hole again? A nightmare.

and sadly, very likely, other than the SP this is your opening day lineup.

    1. metsfan4decades

      Blah…..

Money be damned. If we truly are not competing this year, there is no reason to keep Castillo. Going to be interesting to see how the FO spins this one.

  9. metsfan4decades

Polanco left the Philly game in the 1st with a hyper extended left elbow.

I’m glad to see the injury bug is mostly staying down the Turnpike this spring.

    1. stickguy

      bummer.

I was actually reading the local paper this AM, and they have about 3 guys (Barfield, some rule 5 from the Nats, and Delwyn Young) all performing reasonably well, fighting for a bench job (and for some period, starting 2B!)

Really hoping that barfield gets squeezed out. Would take him in a second over the dudes we have fighting for the job!

  10. Prismo

If the team is willing to throw Castillo or Luis Hernandez out as our starting 2B, what that tells me is that Emaus and Murphy look unusable at second base.

I know everyone wants to give them the benefit of the doubt “try ‘em out, let’s see what we have!” But have you asked yourself why Emaus was put on waivers in the first place? Because of his defense, 100% because of his defense. He always hit in the minors, but he never learned how to play defense. Why would he suddenly be better now? And Murphy’s “natural” position was 3B, which Wright took over. He looked TERRIBLE in the outfield, and barely passable at 1B. 2B requires a much different skill-set than any other position he’s played, and he might just not have what it takes!

Just because he’s given a chance doesn’t mean there’s a shot in heck that he’ll be passable. And if the Mets aren’t even willing to give him that chance, they must firmly believe that he can’t pull it off.

Do I want Hernandez or Castillo at second? HELL NO. But what other choice do we have until Havens potentially stays healthy? Tejada, who can’t hit a lick either?

I don’t see 2B working out for the Mets this season, one starter or another.

    1. stickguy

Havens up by 5/15. Book it.

      1. Prismo

Help us Havens, you’re our only hope!

      2. oleosmirf

Havens is going to be our 2B for years to come although May is a little early.

Since none of his injuries have been career threatening at all, i dont expect his health to be an issue going forward. He’ll start in AA, and hopefully he’ll be just as productive leading to a AAA promotion in the middle of may and on his way to the big leagues by the all-star break.

        1. stickguy

          I can live with that!

the 6 weeks though IMO is not really rushing (if his play justifies it). I still believe that if he hadn’t gone down last June, he would have been up mid year getting all the PT that Tejada got, and most likely, there would be no 2B competition this spring (as well as no Castillo!)

        2. kistics

I think Havens needs to stay healthy for one season before getting promoted. But I would love to see him up soon.

          1. oleosmirf

I dont understand the logic behind that. If he’s healthy and performing well enough to play at the MLB level then he should be here. his risk of injury is the same regardless of what level he’s playing in.

          2. stickguy

agreed. as long as he is playing without restrictions, and not on any kind of rehab schedule, then he should be OK for the Show.

          3. kistics

The logic is that he hasn’t proven anything yet. Last season, he only played 32 games between A+ and AA to put up good numbers. The year before that, his numbers at A+ were not so good.

So IMO, he really needs to play a full season at AA or AAA to prove that he can do it consistently. Anyone can have good 32 games. Doing it consistently is the hard part.

    2. wannybackstra

While Emaus is probably not a good defender, he was probably not protected in the Rule V draft (he was not placed on waivers) because of a numbers game. Protection from the Rule V requires a spot on the 40 man roster (for players who are eligible for the draft).

That doesn’t suggest that he;s a horrible fielder. In any event, there are also questions whether he can hit in the MLs today. One scout was quoted as saying he would probably hit .215

  11. wannybackstra

All of these writers who write negative things must have axes to grind. Surely, there have been so many positive developments to write about this Spring and Mets chances for the upcoming season are very strong.

    1. metsfan4decades

LOL…really Wanny, when was the last time it was positive for the NY Mets? Maybe entering the 2007 season?

I think thought the complaints today were not so much about negative things being written but contrived scenarios being written that don’t seem to exist.

  12. metsfan4decades

Dang….why isn’t this game tonight on SNY? What, no one wanted to work the night shift?

    I don’t care for Gameday.

    1. TRS86

Shocking, no feed at all for a night game.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, I would have like to see Ollie’s pitching performance tonight, if nothing else.

        Just saw this Lennon tweet:

‘Castillo was late covering first on potential DP. Looked bad. Booed loudly. Wondering if he’ll make it through nite at this rate.’

  13. metsfan4decades

For those that can’t get enough of Mookie:

    http://www.mookiesview.blogspot.com/

  14. TRS86

“Mike Puma of the New York Post hears that Collins remains committed to making Luis Hernandez the team’s starting second baseman, but Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork hears that Hernandez has just an “outside” shot at the job ”

So those who are beat writer supporters, how does this happen seemingly all the time?

    1. Prismo

Gotta lean toward Rubin, simply because LH has an absolutely pitiful offensive history, minors included. The guy has a .633 OPS in his minor league career, how can he be a starter in the majors? You kiddin’ me?

      1. metsfan4decades

I think they were just stock piling 2nd baseman, and hoping to get lucky that Murphy would look credible out there. He may yet, but I’m leaning towards that not happening in the next 2 weeks.

Right now, it’s defense against offense b/c they apparently don’t have one credible candidate who has the skills necessary for both right now.

      2. TRS86

I agree but really how do these reporters get 2 completely different reports all the time?

    2. kistics

one source is Luis Hernandez and the other is Luis Castillo…

      1. TRS86

        LOL

    3. Mr North Jersey

      beat writer supporters?

Who is that I also want to know.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Because someone says they like for example in my case Rubin’s reporting it does not mean that everything he says is above reproach.

There are things all reporters say at times that one has to question the purpose or source. In my case when I say I enjoy Rubin’s reporting that doesn’t mean I and everyone should believe everything he says.

        1. Mr North Jersey

you ask “how does this happen seemingly all the time?”

I will assume you mean reporters reporting contradicting stories. Maybe it is because different sources will say different things? who really knows.

All you can do is see who you think is most consistent in what they report when they report it and take your que from there.

That is why I follow Rubin and his reporting more often than not cause I often find him to be reliable in what he says. As opposed to a Mike Puma from the post.

        2. TRS86

          Not really implying that.
Again, to me this is a case of Puma making a story out of nothing just like Rubin did with the Collins does not like Castillo.

          1. Mr North Jersey

If you think Rubin was making a story out of nothing.
That is your right to feel so.

There is nothing I can add to suggest otherwise. All I can do is say that I follow Rubin and his reporting more often than not cause in my opinion I often find him to be reliable in what he says.

Since you say your not really implying what I said I thought you was. There is nothing further to really say.

          2. wannybackstra

i think your constant whining about what reporters write is making a story out of nothing much more than what these writers do.

since you have absolutely no idea whether these writers have actual sources or what these sources tell them, it is really you being just as guilty as you claim they are by implying they’re just making things up.

and it’s about time you recognize the difference between columnists who write their opinions (or more accurately, the opinions their editors tell them to write) and reporters who simply relay information they have learned from various sources whom they deem reliable.

          3. TRS86

Thank you for talking down to me and setting me straight. My opinion is not shared by anyone else oh great Rubin defender.
            Now, done with that.

Which one is your boy Rubin? Is he a columnist or a reporter? Looks to me he is becoming more and more of a columnist and perhaps what I am looking for is a Mets reporter. If you are saying that is what Rubin is, then you don’t think he places his own opinion right next to the sources comments? Just as he did yesterday with Castillo. Source says Collins wants to reduce drama. RUBIN says that could mean Castillo is on the way out. The source from reading the article never even mentioned Castillo.

          4. metsfan4decades

If you read Martino’s Daily News article this morning:

            http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2011/03/16/2011-03-16_met_mix_to_be_or_not_2b.html

Basically, he’s blaming the Met sources concerning the fact that the media is reporting conflicting information:

Team sources said Tuesday that the situation remained fluid. How fluid? Consider this: according to one high-ranking Mets source, Luis Castillo could win the starting job. According to the same source, the team might decide to release Castillo within a week, despite the $6 million owed to him this season.

Confused? So are the Mets, who are struggling to determine which of the flawed candidates should become Jose Reyes’ double-play partner.
            ***********************************************

Who to believe? I have absolutely no idea.

          5. TRS86

Yeah I noticed some of this yesterday when Lennon I think said there was indecision again with the Mets. However, all that there was indecision in was unnamed sources “familiar with Mets thinking”. The Mets themselves seem to have been very truthful and consistent with their plan.

          6. wannybackstra

I’m not defending Rubin or anyone else specifically. I am just someone who is tired of reading so many posts on this site that are aimed at criticizing everything that is written in the newspaper or on reputable new sities — something the author has so little knowledge about.

It wreaks of “bloggers” envying employed writers, is tiresome, uninteresting and is usually hypocritical. Afterall, the most popular topics of discussion here are based on rumors. If the reporters stopped reporting the rumors we’d have nothing to talk about.

I am guessing you have little or no experience working with news media and I’m also guessing this site would not exist without the Heymans, Rubins or Klapisches of the world.

I just wish you would focus more on the content of the report than the source. Because as soon as one these purportedly bullshit reports supports your idea, you will rush to use it in support. Happens every time.

          7. TRS86

You still do not get it. You are right, without these guys, blogs would not exist. It’s not the source I am concerned about. I don’t really care if he reveals the source or not. I do think that they purposely take quotes and twist them to fit their desired effect.

However, half of what blogs do is taking these stories breaking them down assess them for truth and comment on them. I myself read a lot of these articles and regardless if I believe them or not I think there is too much sensationalism going on in the Mets media right now.

            Thanks

          8. kingman 26

I have to chime in with my two cents and say that while I generally agree with TRS, I totally ignore the Rubin/Klapisch/Heyman school of throwing as much sh*t as possible at the wall and seeing what sticks.

I never listen to Francesa (I like Steve Somers though), I never watch SNY’s nonsense other than games/pregame/postgame, I try to tune ESPN out when Olney comes on, and I think much of what the Rubin/Heyman/Olney/Klapisch/Post/Daily News types write is just utterly worthless.

Maybe they are not biased, I just think they are irrelevant windbags with zero credibility and very little to offer to enahnce the Met experience.

Jealousy? Well, I co-own my own successful small biz, am my own boss and life is great. While I love having the opportunity to write some pieces here, I would just as soon work picking lettuce for 5 bucks a day as want to be a Rubin or a Heyman or a Cerrone.

Personally, if you want to make it personal, I think people who read these guys desperately need more hobbies and/or have WAY too much spare time.

I only come in contact with that stuff when it is brought on here.

I read the Ledger, as they print NEWS each day. They don’t print every last irrelevant, exaggerated syllable regarding the latest meaningless drama, like Johan’s condition, when Ollie will be released, the Castillo situation, etc.

They generally print things that actually HAPPEN.

Read this morning’s article on 2B:

“Sixteen days away from that first game in Miami, no clarity appears imminent. Allegiances and preferences within the organization remain hidden.”

            THAT might actually be reality.

Not the whispers in the wind Rubin and the rest posit as actual reality and news.

          9. kingman 26

And another tidbit—most of these guys–Olney most specfically–are held in outright contempt by almost every single MLB player.

They are thought of as dishonest parasites and jokes.

            Which most of them are.

          10. TRS86

This is where I come from on this. To me, as an author and and owner of a decently successful blog I feel that reading these “stories” are part of my “job” (hobby). Sometimes they are not one that I enjoy. Sometimes the constant negative attacks or uses of sensationalism, that are usually based on a twisted version of what an unnamed source says, can weigh on you a little and you need to vent. Thus I get to do that here and it usually gives us plenty to talk about.

          11. wannybackstra

Among the many problems with this nonsense TRS is that you spend more time “assessing” the motives and/or character of the reporter than you do “assessing the truth” of the news.

Let’s forget for a minute that you have no qualifications or information to do any of the above. Why can’t you just question whether Luis Hernandez is really going to be the second basemen rather than carry on about how this news somehow fits a reporter’s stance?

And you, just as much as any reporter, or anyone else, “twist” the information to suit your needs. That’s what information is for, for you to form your own opinions. And that’s what columnists do, they write opinions.

This is the last I have to say on this matter because you are making me sick of this blog.

  15. metsfan4decades

I must have missed Gorzelanny going to the Nats.
Just checked on MLBTR and saw Cubs gave up 3 prospects for him. I wanted the Mets to take a flyer on him but that seems a little steep. I don’t know anything about the prospects though.

  16. kistics

Bay’s hot start has now gone to the pooper… all ST I’ve seen him strikeout… is it time to get worried with this swing change?

    1. metsfan4decades

I noticed that tonight. Then again, the team only has 2 hits so far.
Maybe Bay ought to abandon that new swing, or that idea to hit up the middle for a month or so.

      1. kistics

I can’t speak for baseball swings, but I know in golf, it takes quite awhile for a swing change. Hope that’s not the case, because if Bay gets off to slow start, the fans won’t be so generous…

  17. metsfan4decades

Young batting for himself here in the bottom of the 5th so looks like he’s the first pitcher that might be pitching into the 6th inning here in ST.

    1. TRS86

Maybe Warthen is using Gameday for his reports…. 25 pitches, 20 strikes, 5 balls in 5.1 innings. Efficient. LOL (yeah I know gameday is not correct…)

    2. metsfan4decades

Young gets the first out and is replaced by Perez, who promptly walked the first batter he faced. Two outs quickly followed though to end the inning.

      Ugh…..

      1. kistics

        Yeah… Ollie and his walks…

      2. TRS86

only Ollie could screw up the gameday advantage. He still finishes with 4 balls and 4 strikes. LOL.

(Gameday counts all walks as 4 balls no strikes, all strikeouts as 3 strikes no balls and all balls in play as one strike.)

        1. metsfan4decades

Is that b/c this is ST? Or does Gameday always do this?

          1. TRS86

            ST

  18. metsfan4decades

It’s about time Bay did something here instead of striking out.
And Ike follows with a 2 RBI double.
Ike and maybe Thole seem to be the only 2 who are consistently hitting this ST, far as I can tell.

    1. TRS86

      Pagan’s hit pretty well also.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, you’re right. I did see his 3 run HR the other day.

    2. kistics

What’s with a single to shortstop?

      1. oleosmirf

        infield single…

  19. metsfan4decades

Honestly though, how can we have a lefty specialist coming in from the BP who has as high a walk record as Ollie does? Especially if he comes in with men on base.
    Scary.

    1. stickguy

Wait, let me think here. Do some research. Fire up google.

      OK, got the answer.

      No.

  20. stickguy

any chance Ollie did (didn’t?) enough tonight to finally get tossed?

And slappy seems to have done nothing, especially if he wasn’t cutting it in the field!

actually, this bugs me about Castillo being the “good” defensive guy. sure, after 15 years, he should know where to go, and look smooth around the bag. But that doesn’t offset being slow, and frankly sometimes seemingly lazy, and not getting to balls, getting to the bag, etc.

I can remember times last year where he didn’t charge balls and guys got on, and he didn’t get over to 2nd (late or at all) to even be in position to get a DP ball from the SS.

    he just needs to go.

    1. metsfan4decades

I don’t know about Ollie. Looks like he did just enough to get another look. Figures.

But Castillo? There is absolutely no reason for him to be on this team. Enough already. I don’t care about the 6 MIL. Just let the kids play, at this point.

I say let’s have a 2 for 1. Just release them both on the same day so we don’t have to keep speculating and talking about this.

      1. stickguy

well, at least for 1 day, all the writers will have the same thing to talk about!

  21. metsfan4decades

LOL…complete change in the lineup accept Harris, who moved to LF.

  22. stickguy

OK,reyes looks healthy. Work out the extension now while his BA is low, and they might get something done that is fair to both sides!

      LOL….there you go.

Murph with an RBI double. Dang…if only he looked moderately competent out there at 2nd base.

      1. stickguy

I don’t even care about that anymore.

I am so desperate for actual offense and run production from 2B, I will take anything.

Too bad the Mets didn’t get lucky like the Phils with who the picked up off the scrap heap. Josh barfield has been looking like the top prospect he used to be!

I really hope if Murphy can’t get the job, they pick up someone else off the late cuts. it just can’t be castillo.

        1. metsfan4decades

          Barfield MI prospect?

          1. stickguy

            2B

Another double and a RBI by Murph… is it that hard to be a grade C second baseman? I wouldn’t know…

  24. metsfan4decades

Emaus with one error and a non error but ball deflected off his glove at 2nd tonight.
I know this is ST and last year Ike made his fair share of errors in ST but Emaus hasn’t really shown much with the glove so far.

    1. stickguy

he hasn’t done anything with the bat either. Not a bad combination.

      1. stickguy

        not a good one either!

Other than the occasional walk, KRod has looked sharp this spring.

I heard part of his interview this afternoon with Francesa on WFAN.
Francesa was trying to bait him a bit but Frankie held his ground. This is a new year, he put the mistakes behind him, he’s focused on the season ahead.
I’ve heard comments from many around camp that KRod seems more ‘centered’. Grown up, is what I’d call it.

would not surprise me to see him traded at some point. lots of potential playoff teams are going to be in need for that premier closer and any team willing to pick up the majority of the contract wont have to part with any important prospects/players

      1. stickguy

There are already some posts up with the first thought I had seeing that Feliz may go back to the rangers rotation. F Rod to texas!

        1. oleosmirf

          yea it makes perfect sense

        2. TRS86

Yeah, if you recall I mentioned the Young for Krod deal a few weeks back.

          1. stickguy

No, I would not take Young back. Would have to be prospects and some salary adjustment.

I would rather have K Rod for 2/30 than Young for 3/48 (or whatever exactly the numbers are!)

somewhere to the south, TRS will be sobbing when he wakes up in the morning!

    “Ian Snell Retires”

    1. TRS86

      Gotta wonder what happen there.
