Hernandez Drawing Interest From Other Teams?

Teams poking around about Hernandez

According to Adam Rubin teams are starting to ask about likely out of luck Luis Hernandez.

“There’s a limit to what the Mets could receive in return, but Hernandez is valued because of the lack of quality backup middle infielders.
Hernandez would be unlikely to clear waivers.”

So if he gets cut, doesn’t clear waivers, than any team (in the pecking order) can just pick him up, right?

We wouldn’t get anything for him.

They could work out a trade, but our only threat would be that we could pull him back but that means he’d have to stay with the team the entire season.

I guess he’s out of options? Much like we couldn’t even get the Philies to give us something for Castillo because they knew he’d be on waivers/released, we’re not gonna get anything for Hernandez either, unless they’re threatening to ditch Hu to keep him.

      1. Ceetar

Actually, the speculation that Hernandez could be playing 2B could very well be a bluff that the Mets would be willing to keep him and a claiming team should give something up.

Not really the same as no team would claim Castillo at all because of salary. Hernandez is league minimum so if he goes to waivers it would go bottom up in the NL and then to the AL in terms of first shot. However, say the Sox wanted him they might would rather trade for him than to let him go to the Royals.

        1. Ceetar

that’s true, but now you’re trying to convince me MULTIPLE teams are interesting in this guy?

Castillo wasn’t going on waivers anyway though, everyone knew the Mets were releasing him so why trade for him, sure you risk another team making him a better offer, but it’s freaking Luis Castillo.

I think Hernandez would clear, Rubin is not so sure at all.

“Hernandez would be unlikely to clear waivers.”

They might as well get something for him. He probably won’t return much more than an average player at the bottom levels of the minors, but it’s better than nothing.

    1. TRS86

Exactly. Hey maybe the O’s need him in exchange for us keeping Beato.

      1. stickguy

        that is an interesting angle.

    2. saltygary

Yea I’m fine with getting another marginal reliever and holding him in AAA just in case.

  3. wannybackstra

I wont shed any tears over losing a sub replacement level player.

    1. TRS86

Uh, yeah. Me either. Who cares where Rubin Argenis Hernandez goes?

Dickey strikes out the side in the first.

  5. TRS86

This in direct message on Twitter from Rubin (ask him if Havens is playing in the minor league ST games)

“Hadn’t checked last few days. He was idle for a week until a few days ago, so probably not yet.”

    1. Ceetar

      Rubin is following you?

Rubin would probably know best, and I know he watched the beginning of one of the minor league games on Saturday (among smoozing with just about EVERYONE of any perceived value), but he didn’t look idle idle to me. let’s see if I can find the picture I took of him.

      1. wannybackstra

Sounds like Rubin has said he was no longer idle as of a few days ago. Saturday is a few days ago. So there’s no need for you to find your picture to disprove him.

        1. Ceetar

I’m not trying to find pictures to disprove anybody, just clarification. As Rubin said, he wasn’t positive. Maybe I could’ve found the answer :-P

    2. Ceetar

Can’t find any pictures of him (at least not from the back where I can see his name). was thinking of Flores that I got. I know I saw Havens though, but he could’ve been doing light throwing at best. Hard to keep all the hundreds of players straight sometimes.

Murphy and Emaus looked pretty good on the double play. I think Murphy can be a DeRosa type for sure if he can hit at that level.

As for Emaus, Holliday had a hard (nonST) slide and he handled it.

Part of this article is Forbes take on the Mets current financial problems.

    1. metsfan4decades

A person close to the team says a dozen or so potential bidders have submitted applications to Major League Baseball for approval to see the Mets’ financials.

“I have never seen a sports or baseball sale transaction that has generated as much interest as this one,” says Steve Greenberg, the Allen & Co. banker hired by the Mets to sell part of the team. “I guarantee you as I am sitting here that we will be able to sell a piece of the New York Mets for a big chunk of change.”

      1. Ceetar

Waaaah, not unless they do this and this! and they have to give up control! and SNY!

sorry, Francessa’s griping cut in there.

        1. metsfan4decades

‘The Mets are unlikely to replace much of the $60 million in salaries that comes off its books after 2011, people familiar with the team’s plans say.’

My biggest fear – bye, bye Reyes.

          1. Ceetar

            I don’t believe it.

          2. TRS86

Who are those people? MC? Me?
Again, I don’t see them going into the 80′s in payroll.

  8. TRS86

What a dumb comment from the announcer today.

So Sandy, you graduated from ….. and …. and did a tour in Vietnam. Is this job with the Mets your most difficult one?

    Wow.

in case anyone was curious what MLBTR has to say for the upcoming season.

  10. TRS86

Looks like Sandy has chosen Emaus. Said that he was leading the pack but COULD change in the next week.

  11. stickguy

well, if Luis Hernandez continues to both balls at SS, no one is going to be trading for him!

Not sure Acosta is doing anything much for himself today either.

    1. stickguy

literally right as I hit the submit button, and was watching the swirly circle spin while it posted, Acosta gave up that bomb.

Welcome to the team Izzy and Beato!
