this would seemingly go against reports that he won’t be ready.

Can we just get to the games already? I miss baseball. last weekend was a tease.

  2. metsfan4decades

I’m thinking the reason some are reporting he might not be ready is b/c they’re keeping out of the Grapefruit league games on purpose.

If he’s not ready, they can back date DL him so he only misses the first series of the season.

Makes sense….if they’re reasonably sure he can acclimate pretty quickly to RF once he does play there.

  3. metsfan4decades

Watching the game on ESPN and listening to Sandy’s interview in the booth.

I’m pretty sure I just heard him say Duda likely to start in AAA. Which makes sense if Beltran is ready to go.

  4. Prismo

I’ll believe it when I see it.

    1. wannybackstra

Even if he plays Opening Day, I’m sure it won’t be long before he’s on the shelf again anyway.

  5. metsfan4decades

I’m reading that Oswalt was hit in the head on a line drive off Manny’s bat in that Ray’s game.

    1. Prismo

      *hit in the neck

      1. Prismo

Sorry, half people are saying head, half are saying neck. Did anyone watch the game? haha

        1. Prismo

“But after viewing the replay on their monitor, the Rays radio announcers said that the ball might have actually hit Oswalt on his back between his shoulders”

LOL WHERE DID IT HIT HIM

          1. Ceetar

            it hit him in Florida.

          2. metsfan4decades

            Update:

Hit under the right ear and being called a neck contusion. X-Rays being taken and did not lose conscience.

          3. stickguy

good thing he didn’t lose his conscience. He might need that after he leaves the amoral land of Philly.

    2. Prismo

As a general rule I don’t wish for any player to be injured (and specifically, I have nothing against Oswalt aside from his uniform). However, purely from a baseball standpoint, it’s about time this stuff started happening to the Phillies. They’ve been way too lucky for way too long.

    3. Prismo

Word is: neck contusion/bruise behind his right ear/neck area. Getting x-rays at a hospital momentarily.

  6. njstuckintx

    Go Big Murph!

  7. TRS86

Someone take Hernandez now, right off the field. LOL.

  8. metsfan4decades

Meanwhile, Hernandez with an error at SS which results in a run.

Over in Philly land, Castillo is now 0 for 3, stranding 3 men on base.
Yup, he’s the answer to their prayers sans Utley.

    1. stickguy

I don’t think he is making the team. They will roll with a couple of the other guys they got floating around. But, if they want to carry him as a worthless bench guy, more power to them.

  9. metsfan4decades

Not a good outing for Acosta here today.
Just gave up a 3R HR.

    1. stickguy

walked a guy before that too.

It would be nice to keep him in AAA (getting him through waivers), but just hard to get too worked up about losing him.

they got him off the scrap heap in the first place, and should be able to find a replacement that way at some point if they need to.

  10. Ceetar

Perez to the Nats looking like.

Oh, and I’m up to 2 TRDMB peoples that I’ve met. Wonder if I can get to 3 or 4 by the end of the season.

    1. stickguy

I’ll let you know if I manage to make it up this year. Only got to 1 game last year..

    2. mrose

Ceet – if it was a Sunday you would have met Dirty as well

      1. Ceetar

yeah, blame Jetblue and their arcane free flight restrictions.

        1. mrose

yea, I remember when they changed them and claimed how great they would be.. they stink now

          1. Ceetar

well, actually it was the old style that I was restricted by, my last free flight under the old system but they were only letting me use them for early flights.

            next year.

          2. mrose

yea, next year we need to have a large gathering

  11. Prismo

Ollie refuses a minor league assignment with the Mets, but when released signs one with the Nats. Screw you Ollie.

    1. Ceetar

There is a HUGE difference between midseason last year and this year.

      1. Prismo

        STOP DEFENDING OLLIE

My god, he’s not even on the team anymore, and you’re asking people if they should cheer for him. Leave it be, he’s gone.

        1. Prismo

          “Leave it be, he’s gone.”

And that could probably be said to me as well. However, when all the Mets beat writers are still reporting on him, I find it hard not to comment.

        2. Ceetar

I never asked if people were going to cheer for him, I asked if people are going to cheer. Big difference, and got a lot of yeses.

          1. Prismo

Who sarcastically said they’d cheer for him? COME ON. This is absurd. This isn’t even optimism, it’s ridiculism.

          2. Ceetar

a couple of replies. it’s not unheard of. I seem to remember Benitez getting a few cheers.

It has nothing to do with optimism (except maybe optimistic that the Mets would hit Perez..but now that he’s a former met I’m supposed to be all doom and gloom and pretend I think he’ll kill the Mets?)

        3. wannybackstra

I second the motion to dismiss any further Ollie support. Enough already.

  12. metsfan4decades

I caught the tail end of a segment on MLB network the other day where Reynolds and WIlliams were essentially blaming the Mets (pitching coach/staff) for the failures of Peres over the past 2 years.

I can’t believe anyone who has watched him pitch, or followed this drama could possibly have this opinion.

I don’t care if the Nats ‘fix’ him. He’s gone, I’m happy.

    Moving on….

    1. stickguy

I like you attitude. Ditto for Castillo. they are gone, I never have to worry about seeing them in the lineup again, so I don’t really care what they do.

I don’t think Castillo is making the Phils anyway. No clue what the nats are thinking about Ollie, but that should help make sure they finish last!

      1. Ceetar

Castillo could make the Phils..he’s better than Valdez anyway.

and the Nats are paying Ollie practically nothing for a chance, however miniscule that is.

They’re no longer on the team, so I don’t really care either way.

        1. oleosmirf

Valdez has done well for the Phillies though even though Castillo is probably the better player…I hope Castillo makes their team and starts complaining about other guys playing over him…

        2. TRS86

Are we basing it on last year? If so then Valdez had a higher WAR.

        3. stickguy

irrelevant I know, though maybe not totally if we are discussing things that make the Phils worse!

Castillo brings the same problem to the Phils as the Mets. He only plays 2B. so worthless unless he is starting to some degree, since they have health issues at 3B and SS too. Anytime you use Castillo, it means others may have to shuffle too.

        4. metsfan4decades

DNL tonight on SNY were ripping the Mets for cutting Castillo. Said he was the best of the candidates, he wasn’t a clubhouse cancer, his teammates liked him and he had one year left on his contract. Everyone but Jonas thought he should have been given the job.

Again…I don’t care. I don’t have to see him slap at a ball again, knowing it’s gonna be picked up quickly in the OF since they all play him like he’s a pitcher at the plate. That’s if he makes contact.

I’m not enamored with Emaus and I think he’ll be gone by the ASB. I think I’d rather see Murph playing second – and playing his heart out there – even if he does look like he’s got 2 left feet.

          1. oleosmirf

i’ve found that I know more about the Mets than pretty much all of the so-called experts on SNY and WFAN…

          2. stickguy

I really don’t understand this “castillo was the best” nonsense. Or more accurately, I think it is being misapplied.

1st, he was having a lousy camp overall. He had maybe 1 ball out of the IF, and no extra base hits. no range to speak of. etc.

but mostly, he had zero, nada, zippo upside. At best, he turned back the clock to 2009, and was again only a little below acceptable (as opposed to 2010, where he was way below guy off the street level bad).

so if you believed he was the best of the options, the real answer was to get some more options, fast,

besides, 2B is likely to be fluid. The OD starter may not make it to May, and it may be a revolving door, but I am willing to bet that whatever mix/match they do, it will overall significantly outperform what Castillo would do (assuming he could even stay healthy).

at least now there is a chance someone could have a surprisingly good year!

And of course, no need to hear Slappy piss and moan about being stuck in the 8 hole.

          3. hazmet

I guess Beningo wasn’t on the set.

  13. Mr North Jersey

You know how the saying goes. The best-laid plans of mice and men…

    1. Prismo

      …often go right!

  14. oleosmirf

Beltran will most likely go on the DL to start the season and miss the first 4 games of the season. I also expect Isringhausen to start on the DL just so they don’t lose Acosta who would seemingly be the odd man out.

    1. metsfan4decades

I wouldn’t doubt that might be the plan with Beltran either.

As far as Isringhausen, I never thought about the DL with him. Interesting idea. Gives him a little more time to get the arm in shape.

  15. TRS86

So if the Nats actually bring OP up to the bigs does that make us even for the Jesus Flores situation?

LOL, borrowed that from a comment on MB.

    1. oleosmirf

looks like losing Flores isn’t really that big of a deal after all. Thole looks like he’s going to work out just fine…

    2. metsfan4decades

      LOL.

This over on MLBTR on the Perez signing:

Oliver Perez is the next Sandy Koufax.”
      - Scott Boras

As least Koufax knew when to quit.

      1. njstuckintx

Sandy Koufax at his current age, he means. Well, Sandy can probably throw harder these days, so I take that back.

      2. hazmet

Koufax should sue for defamation of character.
