Should the Mets take a flyer on Silva?

So what happen over the weekend?  Oliver Perez , Carlos Silva was released.  Of course he will clear waivers.  No one would pick up that contract.  However, is he worth the MLB minimum to stash away as the Mets long-man to protect against a Young or Capuano injury?  Silva rebounded well enough last year to post a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts.  As usual he was victimized by the long ball.  Could bringing him to Citi help with those issues?  Look, he’s not a very good pitcher but he would instantly become #6 or 7 on the depth chart for little to no commitment.

    My vote? Pass.

I don’t think it’s a matter of if he has any talent left. I think it’s the whole issue of a culture change. We just ‘took out the trash’, so to speak. I don’t mind taking a chance on someone who might have some upside. I just don’t see Silva in that category.

True, but I also look at trade-able commodities. Silva if pitching to an under 4.00 ERA (very possible if pitching half the games in Citi) would be a chip for teams in July. A back-end starter that cost less than the MLB minimum (by that point) could net a decent prospect one would think. If he tanks then you release him. Honestly there is a good chance that Young and or Cap get traded as well.

        O.K.
But maybe I’m being cheap here – and as tight as money seems to be in this organization lately, I’d rather that league minimum be put towards picking up a catcher, if we can.

I have no idea if Paulino has as yet some undiscovered health issue. If yes though, do we really want to see Nickeas as the everyday back up catcher?
I saw an interview with Nickeas during one of these ST games. As young as he is (28?), he’s extremely well spoken and seems to know the game very well. I see a future in coaching for this young man. However, his current day talent leaves something to be desired.

I don’t imagine the Mets are limited by MLB minimum deals. I am sure they are in fact looking for a catcher as we speak. Maybe we can trade Evans or Acosta for one.

I was thinking Max Ramirez of the Cubs if he doesnt make their team since he is out of options…

    No.

Do we have the room in Buffalo? I think so. Don’t want to take away SP time from a prospect necessarily, but I wouldn’t be against Silva. depth is good. You could certainly do worse in a 6th/7th type starter.

well we already have a set rotation so unless he is willing to go to Buffalo, I don’t see what use there is in signing him other than AAA depth

      MLB pen as the longman?

      1. oleosmirf

not if it means losing Beato, Boyer, Isringhausen or Acosta…

        1. TRS86

Not really concerned about losing Boyer, Izzy or Acosta honestly.

nor am i about the need for a long man…

One day I’m home to watch some ST baseball, the game is called.

I’d be shocked if the sandy regime would bring in a guy like silva. doesn’t throw hard and doesn’t seem too bright. not to mention a bit of a hothead.

Only if he was a MiL signing, willing to go to Buffalo as depth.

Like TRS said, if the team is out of the running toward the ASB, I expect they will trade as many 1 year deals as possible (beyond the tricky one of Beltran, 2/3 of the rotation and 2-3 pen arms could all be in play). So, add him to that mix.

I would not bring him in and put him in the Mets pen though.
