As I said on the other post, expected. Now we shall see if the Mets pull him back if claimed.

    Huh, this is really interesting.

I wonder what the beat writer who had Hernandez starting at 2B thinks about this development…..

    1. TRS86

Easy for Puma to cover by saying there was unrest between Collins and Sandy.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Why would you even ask would be my question since you clearly have stated what many in the media say is a waste of your time?

I am beginning to wonder if you care more than you may be letting on.

      1. TRS86

So what about that last bullpen spot? Boyer, Izzy or Acosta?

      2. kingman 26

Because Mr N, who I really do like and respect a great deal, I just often wonder about things, and one of those thing I wonder about is how people who write for huge corporate news organizations can write things which are total, complete bull****.

        :-)

        1. TRS86

Because they get paid to do it and just like the Yankee discussion earlier not only are there minimal consequences there are many rewards.

          1. kingman 26

            Again, excellent answer.

        2. Mr North Jersey

          Fair enough.

Considering how you felt about the subject I find it odd you would wonder what someone that writes things which are total, complete bull****.thinks. But if you with your opinions still wonders what Puma thinks imagine others?

How’s the saying go again? One man’s bull**** is another man’s amusement?

OK there is no such saying but you get my point. :-)
          Just goes to show that

          1. kingman 26

“One man’s bull**** is another man’s amusement?”

Well sir, there SHOULD be a saying like that!

          2. Mr North Jersey

            lol

          3. kingman 26

Well, I sure like it when we can disagree and make each other laugh.

            :-)

  3. TRS86

Just saw where Max Ramirez was on waivers. Mets should have a GREAT shot to pick up a quality backup here to protect against a Paulino abs.

    1. TRS86

I ask Rubin and he was unaware of any current interest. However, not sure it would have ever came up.

      1. wannybackstra

So if I understand correctly, you think Rubin has a bias against the Mets and is often full of sh*t yet you turn to him for information about the Mets.

A bit hypocritical, don’t you think?

        1. Ceetar

It’s hard to be biased and full of it when you’re merely reporting information. Rubin talks to everyone and is everywhere, which is what helps him get this information. And this particular nugget is something that comes from the team. They choose to pass it through Rubin ,but were he not there, they’d pass it along to someone else.

          1. wannybackstra

whereas you are biased and full of it without any information.

          2. TRS86

LOL, again Wanny 99% of us on this site fit that category. Especially you and I.

        2. TRS86

Sure it is. Aren’t we all? Rubin if nothing else is approachable. I am not sure I would get as quick of a response from any other beat writer. Many beat writers are full of crap but that does not mean that you ward them off completely as they have information that you need. You just have to have your BS monitor on at times when reading their columns. So in other words, I am using him baby.

    2. stickguy

I would be very surprised if the Mets weren’t actively monitoring the wire for cheap catching support.

      1. TRS86

I would certainly think this qualifies and there are not many teams he would have to pass by before the Mets could net the claim.

      2. metsfan4decades

Yes, I’d wonder why too the Mets wouldn’t be looking out for a catcher on the cheap.

Not unless they believe whatever this problem is with Paulino’s blood work is of the ‘not serious, short term’ variety.

        1. TRS86

Could be but even then might as well claim Ramirez and then release him when you get Paulino back.

        2. Mr North Jersey

Still waiting to see if there will be some further news regarding Paulino today.

  4. metsfan4decades

If none of the 3 of these are claimed and go to Buffalo (if Misch doesn’t opt out), do all 3 have to go on the 40 man roster?

    1. TRS86

None of them will be on the 40 man. Once cleared you are clear of the 40 man and any 40 man rules. Until you need to be called up again and then it starts all over. Placed on the 40 man with no options.

      1. Mr North Jersey

So what about that last bullpen spot? Boyer, Izzy or Acosta?

        1. TRS86

          LOL.
Uh… personally? I think Acosta could clear waivers. Can’t keep all 3, yet honestly none of the 3 are season breakers.

Could send Parnell down as many have suggested but not sure that’s wise…. might destroy his confidence like they did Evans (sarcastic warning).

          1. Mr North Jersey

            LoL My thoughts exactly. ;-)

          2. oleosmirf

I dont see how Acosta passes through waivers. His numbers last season were very good, throws in the mid-90s and is having a very good spring.

          3. TRS86

Honestly his numbers last year were very misleading. He did not do well with inherited runners at all. ERA for middle relief is almost pointless right?

          4. hazmet

I believe he came in and gave up 2 grand slams last year too.

          5. TRS86

Here’s a shocking stat. Acosta only pitched 3/39 innings in save situations and had an ERA of 12.00 in those innings. He was a mop up guy. While he did well for a mop up guy that is what he is.
            Numbers with RSIP: .324 .385 .500 .885
            Numbers with runners on: .270 .338 .429 .767
            Take all those runners off: .176 .282 .243 .526

Yeah some are small sample sizes but with only 39 innings his entire season was a small sample size.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The Mets have asked the right-handed reliever Jason Isringhausen to remain in extended spring training for a week or two to increase his arm strength and reassure them that his elbow is healthy.

Isringhausen, 38, had been against the idea, but he told the Mets he would consider the possibility. He has said he will not pitch in Class AAA once the season starts.

The Mets have also discussed the idea of asking another right-handed reliever, Blaine Boyer, to accept a minor league assignment. He has an opt-out in his contract that would allow him to become a free agent if the Mets do not put him on the 25-man roster.

Both Isringhausen and Boyer have pitched well this spring. But the Mets are particularly intrigued by Isringhausen because of his experience as an elite closer, and because he reached 92 miles per hour on their radar gun Sunday in his last outing after experiencing soreness in his elbow last week.

They also see him as someone who could provide guidance and leadership to younger relievers, especially Bobby Parnell.

The Mets, who are likely to open the season with 12 pitchers, including seven relievers, are trying to figure out a way to keep Manny Acosta, too. Their goal is to keep as many pitchers as possible, and they know if they put Acosta on waivers, he will almost certainly be taken by another team.

          7. stickguy

the extended ST deal would be a nice safe guard for the mets. If he can’t handle that, he sure isn’t making it very far into the season!

I don’t think Boyer takes the assignment, but who knows. Why would he, before finding out for sure if some other team will give him a ML gig?

Hope they asked Acosta to do it also, but I guess that is different since he is on a ML deal.

Just cut Manny, keep Boyer, and start Izzy in EXST and the team is set.

        2. Ceetar

saw somewhere that the Mets asked Izzy to remain in Florida for a week or two to build arm strength.

          1. stickguy

that would probably be the best for the team. and probably not bad for Izzy either.

Pedro Feliciano is going to miss the first 2 weeks tdue to upper arm soreness:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=6267266

Wish him nothing but the best but letting him go was an excellent decision. The team put him through way too much.

    1. metsfan4decades

      This.

And last I read, Luis Ayala was in line to be his temporary replacement.

Yes, that Luis Ayala. I didn’t even know he was in the Yankee minors.

  6. saltygary

Stark at ESPN has a quick write up about Castillo and why it demonstrates serious trouble for Utley (which we all knew).

    Great stat posted in it:

Extra-base hits by Castillo over the last three seasons combined: 33.

Extra-base hits by Utley in 2009 AT THE ALL-STAR BREAK: 34.

You need an insider account to read it but there isnt much else to it…

    1. metsfan4decades

I saw today where Castillo drew a walk and hit a double. However, the double was of the variety that the LF really misjudged it and never got close to it.

So now some Philly fans actually commented over on BL gems like:

Its gonna be funny in mid-May when Castillo is batting .350 with 25 SB just so he can ram it down the Mets throat.

      1. stickguy

I live with it up close. They really think that they now have some kind of birthright to success, and that their crap don’t stink like everyone elses!

The team really seems to be high on the rule 5 guy they picked up from the nats. Supposed to be a defensive whiz, but I doubt he will hit very much. Not that slappy will either once the games count and the pitchers are really trying!

        1. Ceetar

dunno about that, since he was one of the more clutch guys on our team while he was here.

Regardless, he’s not hitting .350 with 25 SB in May. I wouldn’t rule out .305 with 5 SB which would be an upgrade over those other guys though.

  7. TRS86

So looks like the Mets are doing the right thing here. Trying their best to keep as many options as possible by asking Izzy to stay behind for a week or two to build arm strength, asking Boyer to go to AAA even though he has an opt out and keeping Acosta in the pen. If that were to work the Mets would only potentially lose Misch and honestly I can’t imagine anyone would claim him at this point in the spring.
