Awesome news. Something tells me if we had the old regime in place he would have walked.

  2. metsfan4decades

    All right, Izzy.
    Glad to hear this.

  3. TRS86

During that 2 weeks another team can call on Izzy and if the Mets don’t want him to go they have to call him up. Basically right of first refusal.

  4. stickguy

I am guessing that during the 2 weeks he is somewhat off limits to other teams. One of the unwritten rules (like guys passing through waivers, unless you are the Yankees and claim them to be schmucks).

But who knows if another team calls tomorrow.

at this point, it is unclear if he is fully ready to go, and teams mostly have their rosters set, so it does seem logical for everyone to look at him for a couple weeks, along with their own teams, and see if it is worth making a move.

never know, by then he could look great, and one of the guys in the pen could be blowing chunks, and they make a move that way.

    1. TRS86

See above, he is very on limits to other teams during this two weeks.

      1. stickguy

they can, doesn’t mean they will.

        1. TRS86

“I am guessing that during the 2 weeks he is somewhat off limits to other teams. ”

Again not saying anyone is likely. Just saying that he is very available.

        2. Ceetar

yeah, don’t know what the GM code of ethics is.

If you were Amaro, wouldn’t you consider it just to try to burn out the Mets depth a little?

          1. TRS86

LOL, like Amaro is really concerned about Mets depth at this point.

          2. Ceetar

True, but it’s not like they couldn’t use a reliever, particularly one with closing experience.

  5. stickguy

oh damn. I forgot to make my joke about the “no izzy left behind” program.

    so consider it (poorly) made.

  6. metsfan4decades

    Last ST game starting now.

2 days until the season starter.

    LGM!

  7. metsfan4decades

    Per the Daily News:

    (Instead of Feliciano, they get):

Luis Ayala makes the Yankees, relief pitcher last man added to the staff

  8. kistics

I don’t understand why 2 weeks make any difference to the Mets. Parnell is the only one that can be sent down. So does this mean they’ll re-evaluate Parnell for 2 weeks? Or Beato for 2 weeks?

    1. TRS86

Or see if an injury occurs or then be able to send Boyer down.

      1. kistics

Boyer can be sent down after 2 weeks? That doesn’t make sense.

        1. TRS86

He had an opt out in his contract. Not sure what happens if the opt out date passes and then he is optioned.

          1. kistics

I just don’t see Boyer not exercising the opt out clause if he knows there’s a possibility that he’ll be sent down after 2 weeks.

          2. TRS86

He does not have a choice. He’s on the team. No opt out if you are on the team.

          3. stickguy

the opt out is moot at this point.

but, most likely, he does not (boyer) have options either. So if they try to send him down in 2 weeks, he can refuse to go.

To me, this move screams of continuing the Beato and Boyer auditions for 2 more weeks, along with Izzy of course, and if they think they made the wrong decision, one of the B’s gets cut instead.

of course, if someone gets hurt, that would open up a spot.

Parnell going down to keep them all is certainly an option, but probably not likely to be used.

          4. TRS86

I wonder if Boyer has the right to refuse AAA assignment? And at that point would he? Also have to think it’s a little about money because if he makes the MLB team he is getting MLB money.

          5. kistics

Aren’t they committed major league salary for Boyer?

          6. stickguy

yes, once the season starts, he has a ML deal, just not a very big one.

no idea how much money would override making a performance based move if a player happens to be stinking up the joint.

          7. TRS86

They are now. Question is how much do they have to pay if they send him back down or release him. Is his contract now a guaranteed deal?

  9. TRS86

In other news… Chris Young is Tall.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yes, yes he is. Makes Pelf look like his little brother.

In other news, Beltran fields a ball off the wall in RF and is still standing.

    2. metsfan4decades

And he’s got a bat too.

  10. metsfan4decades

Misch appears to have cleared waivers. No surprise there.

    See nothing on Evans though.

    1. TRS86

Or Acosta other than the fact that he is not in uniform today.

  11. TRS86

    Man, Wright looks dialed in.

  12. Prismo

    CASTILLO RELEASED!!

    1. mrose

      ah beat me to it

    2. kistics

Dang.. I was hoping he would stay with the Philies…

    1. metsfan4decades

      wow, I’m surprised.

Even the Philly fans thought he was a lock to start the season.

      1. TRS86

I think they just claimed someone from the Giants maybe?

        1. TRS86

          Kevin Frandsen

      2. TRS86

Also may have came down to keeping that rule 5 guy they like and Castillo. So he may have gotten Emaused again.

  13. TRS86

Baseball God to Castillo…. You’re done son.

    1. mrose

      ah Slappy McSingleton…

    2. metsfan4decades

LOL…this from a Phills fan that apparently wanted Castillo for his ‘high’ OBP:

“I must admit, on an otherwise well-run team, I find the Phillies’ excessive obsession with defense & versatility to border on the bizarre.”

Sure, no good reason to value defense. You’ve got the Fab 4. They’ll just strike out 27 every game.

      1. TRS86

Got to remember that’s a product of their park and style. No reason for a 2B with range when your RF is playing a deep 2B.

        1. metsfan4decades

I get that but when Howard is your 1st baseman, you almost have to have above average defense and range at 2nd.

  14. metsfan4decades

AnthonyDiComoAnthonyDiComo: Now on Mets.com: Johan disappointed he’s not heading north.

Um, he’s not the only one.

    1. Ceetar

Saw someone tweet that c.C. Sabathia predicts teh Yanks will win it all. I mean, is this really the time to ask the inevitable stupid questions taht you know the answer to?

  15. stickguy

Almost had a hard attack. Just flipped over to the box score, and the first line I saw was murphy, D – SS.

I did not know that the marlins had one too, and did not realize at first glance I was looking at their box.

    1. kistics

Hard attack… hmm.. why is my mind in the gutter?

      1. TRS86

        LOL. Oh my.

  16. metsfan4decades

So, will the usual suspects be joining me Friday night in the Dugout for the season opener?

Maybe you could put a mention on game thread on Friday about the Dugout?

    1. stickguy

will be there at some point most likely.

    2. TRS86

Yeah we need to talk it up better than that. Will have to think on that one.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Thanks.

The Dugout is the next best thing to being at the Park and sharing the game with fans there.

    3. Ceetar

      Uh…I’m there now. never left..

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL…yes, I know.
I went there a couple of times this spring and saw the always present Ceetar signed in.

  17. kistics

I was hoping the Phillies would keep Castillo.

  18. wannybackstra

Eddie C. talking about Beltran moving slowly in RF.

Can’t be; he’s perfectly healthy. Afterall, he’s out there.

    1. TRS86

Agreed. Man we are seeing eye to eye a lot lately. LOL.

    2. TRS86

That being said, I am more in the middle on this debate. Obviously Beltran is not healthy and will never be the same. It becomes a question as to how much he can play through pain.

Also, not really concerned about him moving slowly in RF. He’s most likely sore as hell. Wanny I will assume you are healthy but if you went and ran 5 miles (assuming you don’t now) you would be sore the next day. Obviously Beltran is an athlete and should not be sore from playing in one game. However, he has not played and thus I am sure he is.

      1. wannybackstra

        Moses smell the roses.

        1. TRS86

Again, talking to the wrong one on this one Wanny. I am on record saying I would be happy with 100 games from Beltran this year.

      2. stickguy

shove him in the ice filled bath tub and tell the namby pampy candy ass to suck it up.

      3. metsfan4decades

He’s going to have a lot of ground to cover out there in RF…..

And yes, watching the game today he’s not moving all that quick on balls that were hit down the RF corner.

  19. wannybackstra

I read somewhere on this site today that someone thought Evans would be a candidate to replace Bay if he is DLd. Don’t think so because when Bay came back Evans would have to be placed through waivers again. In all likelihood, Duda would get the spot because he’s got options. Evans will probably not come back up until it looks like he’ll stick for a while (which I don’t think will ever happen unless Hairston get hurt).

    1. TRS86

True but if they were ok with losing him one time, wouldn’t they be ok with losing him again? Also, if he was not claimed now is it likely he would be in 2 weeks?

      1. wannybackstra

A lot of things can happen in 2 weeks. Why risk it when you have someone like Duda and won’t have to take the chance?

        1. stickguy

but if they are afraid of calling him up because they might lose him, what is the point of bringing him back at all? To keep him in the minors, until (if) a permanent job opens up?

        2. TRS86

Why not risk it? LOL. If they risk it before, is it really a risk?

I guess I am thinking that they might go with platoons in LF and RF (the 2 games a week Beltran is out…. LOL).

          1. wannybackstra

Do you have some kind of information that confirms that over the next few weeks no team will have a change in circumstances that might lead them to want to place a claim on a guy like Evans?

          2. TRS86

Do you have info that they will? Of course not.
My point is that if they were not that concerned before then why would they be then? He’s a player without a position or future with the Mets. Why try and stash him at AAA?

          3. Ceetar

I doubt they’d reexpose him for less than 2 weeks, Just seems unnecessary. But given a longer time period than that, there’s a chance that he’ll be good enough to stick anywya or bad enough to clear again regardless.

          4. wannybackstra

Sometimes talking to you is like talking to Yogi Berra. AFLAC!!!

Why is it a risk? Because you have no assurance that another team won’t claim him.

And just because they exposed him now doesn’t mean they want to lose him. Don’t you think they might still prefer to keep him? Within the rules they have no choice but to expose him. But he’s performed well this Spring and there’s reason to think that the team might think he would be useful to retain at AAA for depth.

I find it hard to believe that you would argue such things — ye old author of the sore muscles hypothesis.

          5. TRS86

I too find it hard to believe we are even spending enough time on Evans to argue.

My point is that I don’t think the Mets will consider it a huge risk to expose him again considering they did it the first time. Yeah it COULD be a larger risk but I just think if they were willing to take the risk this time they would be willing to take that risk again. Then again they could think “whew, we got lucky there. Let’s not try that again…”

    2. stickguy

      couple points.

1, the if he gets any other ML offers he won’t take a MiL deal with the mets. so, they may have to offer him a ML deal, in which case he will be on the team until Bay comes back, then waived again, but they won’t lose anything doing that.

the only way they could jeopardize keeping him is he he clears, and signs a MiL deal. Still not sure that would prevent them from signing him though, if they think he is the best option.

      2. No reports yet on Bay, right? But there is a decent chance, if something is torn, that he could be out way longer than the first 10 days or so of the season. If they are looking at 4-6 weeks, or more, Evans having to clear waivers again will be a minor issue.

      1. wannybackstra

i think that if he goes unclaimed he remains property of the Mets until or unless they release him.

        1. metsfan4decades

          My understanding as well.

      2. TRS86

Stick, he does not have the right to refuse to report. He’s too young. If he clears then he has to report.

        1. stickguy

really? I thought that when you were out of options you could refuse an assignment. That takes more years of service to be able to do?

Acosta and Hernandez aren’t in that situation, are they?

          1. TRS86

Not sure, no idea what their service time is.

  20. metsfan4decades

Gary said the Mets have until 11am tomorrow to submit their 25 man roster to MLB. Said they’re probably going to use every one of the minutes left to figure it out

I know Bay was on a plane to NY today for an MRI but have you ever flown into any of the tri state area airports? When I used to travel all the time for work, 1 out of every 2 flights back into Newark were always late.

  21. metsfan4decades

Did you see that line drive HR Josh Satin just hit.
Nice, he didn’t even know it was a HR.

    1. TRS86

Is that our 1st HR by a 2B this year?

      1. stickguy

No, Emaus has one. Not sure if any others.

  22. TRS86

“C Max Ramirez has cleared waivers and been outrighted to the Minor League camp”

Dolt…. uh…. what were we thinking?

    1. stickguy

what? The Mets have absolutely no depth at C, even with paulino. If he is gone for a while, they are paper thin.

I did not look, but can Ramirez possibly be so bad that the Mets couldn’t use him?

      1. metsfan4decades

        Have no idea.
I know Sandy said yesterday, even not knowing the extent of Paulino’s health problem until all tests are back, are not looking at catching depth at this time.

      2. TRS86

Agreed, I guess they did not want to place him on the 25 man instead of Mickie at this point. Maybe they are preferring familiarity. Of course they would have also had to clear a spot on the 40 man that they may not currently have.

        1. Ceetar

I’m partial to Kai Gronauer, who’s probably not ready anyway and it’s just because I ran into him at a bar.

          1. TRS86

            Was he ok?

          2. Ceetar

yeah, he only had a glass or two of wine. Him, Turner and Hairston left pretty quickly though.

          3. TRS86

LOL, you missed it. I was making the 2nd grade joke of was he ok after you ran into him.

          4. metsfan4decades

I don’t know what that says about me that I got it. lol.

          5. Ceetar

nah, not really. but I didn’t have a good 2nd grade retort ready, so i just ignored it.

I didn’t hit anything in florida with my car while i was down there. Didn’t see Tim Hudson or Victorino though.

  23. stickguy

probably means he did clear then, if he is still in camp in uniform. Unlike acosta.

never did trust that guy. And TK will surely be glad he is gone.

  24. TRS86

LOL, Hairston showing why he is here and Evans might not be.

    1. stickguy

he has had a nice spring.

and once again, the spare parts come in, and the mets pile up a big inning!

      1. metsfan4decades

You know, I seemed to remember this last spring too. All those hitting were not those expected to make the team – like Ike.

        1. metsfan4decades

Then again, could be b/c after a couple of times through the lineup, when you take the regulars out, you might have a guy on the mound for the opposition who is not expected to make the team either. Or back end guy from their BP.

    2. metsfan4decades

I’ll be real surprised if Hairston continues hitting like this once the season starts. But I’ll take it if he does!

      1. TRS86

He won’t hit like this for sure but if used in a platoon he will be very useful.

        1. Ceetar

He provides nice CF backup, particularly against tough lefties.

  25. TRS86

Kelly Stinnett last Rule 5 guy to stay all year.

  26. TRS86

Luis Hernandez has also cleared waivers. Guess the Phillies did not want him for 2B either. I am sure Collins is dancing in the streets….. LOL.

  27. metsfan4decades

And with that win, ST comes to an end.

    Another season begins.

    LGM!
