Bay Says The Way He Had The Injury Was “Devastating”

Jason Bay was officially put on the 15-Day Disabled List yesterday with a strained left rib cage. The move is backdated to March 25.

This morning Bay speaking about the injury said he actually suffered it 2 days earlier taking swings during batting practice. Bay said it was “devastating” to have had the injury the way he did.

Regarding the plan on when he will be back Bay said, “The goal is I think they’re going to backdate it enough where I would be eligible to come back on the 9th, I believe. In talking to the doctors — things change — but in talking to the doctors they think it’s very reasonable to think I could be out there for that, which would be nice.”

Kind of feel sorry for him here. You know the last thing he wanted was to get off to a slow start. Now he will miss opening day and will be more likely to start slow because he will be recovering. Seems he has a Omar curse for sure.

Have to agree. Probably the last thing he wanted was to be left behind in PSL. Maybe he and Johan can commiserate for awhile.

well, considering he is getting a check (before taxes) for about 1.4 million dollars tomorrow, that should help soothe the pain!

Getting hurt in something as simple as BP right before the season starts has gotta suck.

It’d be like if MLB decided, right now, to delay the season until NEXT Friday. What? No basball?!?!

Same way I feel bad for Murphy last year. He was gonna get a chance to start the year and try to prove something, and ‘poof’ injured at the last minute, overtaken by a great rookie and is now a bench guy.

He needs to talk to Glavine about the meaning of devastating!

The problem is Bay signed a contract he has no chance of living up to as a Met. Im sure he could rebound on an AL team or a team like Philly or Cincy that plays in a tiny stadium but in our giant stadium he just doesnt have enough lift in his swing to hit 20+ HR here.

No matter what his peripheral stats are he’s never going to be a 25/100 guy as a Met and hopefully Sandy can find a way to trade his contract instead of trading the best SS that will probably ever wear a Mets uniform.

Nah, I disagree. He’ll hit 25. And really as long as he hits 20 or so and the others are raging doubles off the walls and his OBP is soaring, that’s just fine. better than fine.

You know, even if he puts up 25/100 this year I’d rather they try and trade him if it means that money can be used to resign Reyes.

      I don’t think it’s happening though.

With all the depth the Mets have in the OF, it’d certainly be an interesting sell high move to trade Bay if he has a good year.

Yeah it might be hard to trade him with his salary. Maybe if the Mets eat some money…

If GMJ can be flipped or Vernon Wells (!!!) can be traded… Bay certainly can as well. All depends on how much $$$ to eat and what you expect to see in return.

I would trade him no matter what he did this year. Even if he has a good year, I would worry about him repeating it as he ages, losing a better player over money, and blocking a few interesting prospects.

He has to be close to untradeable, but maybe they can flip bad contracts (something like Lackey for Bay, not saying the Sox want him back, just that is the type of deal that might work).

        1. njstuckintx

Of course you would. He could be potentially blocking Super Duda.

          :)

        2. TRS86

He is no where near untradeable now and for sure if he rebounded at all he would not be in the future. He’s not Castillo or Perez. Even Carlos Silva got traded.

            So did Milton Bradley!

            Oh, wait…

The way I read his interview was that this was more of a minor setback than a major one. He said “devastating”, because he couldn’t be on the opening day roster after the long lay off last season. It’s a bit like if we all had Dish Network and can’t watch SNY for a week or so after waiting for baseball all winter. It’s disappointing and could be “devastating” at first, but it’s only a week or two. I don’t see why this is a big deal at this point.

Do we at least know if he actually made contact on the swing that caused the injury? Or was it because he was trying to hard to actually turn on the inside fastball?

    1. stickguy

who knows. People strain that muscle sneezing, so it could be a total fluke.

LOL…I don’t have a twitter account but have been following a twitter debate concerning a problem one well known Met blogger has with a recent MLB promotion/contest.

I just have to add my two cents: I wish she’s stop writing like she’s representing the entire female fan base. She sure as heck doesn’t reflect my opinions, and that’s after reading many of her ‘rants’ over the past year.

Gee, I wonder who that one is……

      Cat fight, cat fight…..

I guess that was inappropriate too…
