What a difference a year can make

A while back The ‘Ropolitans ran this post:

A look back at the 2010 Opening Day lineup

  1. Alex Cora – SS:  FA signing
  2. Luis Castillo – 2B: Trade/ signing
  3. David Wright – 3B: Draft
  4. Mike Jacobs – 1B: Draft, traded, reacquired
  5. Jason Bay – LF: Trade, traded, FA
  6. Gary Matthews Jr. – CF: Trade
  7. Jeff Francoeur – RF: Trade
  8. Rod Barajas – C: FA
  9. Johan Santana – LHP*: Trade

(I added the strike for Bay and Johan as well as how obtained.)

Added by me:

Now take a look at this year’s projected lineup.  I am leaving Duda in LF until an official announcement is made.

1. Reyes  draft

2. Pagan drafted, lost, reacquired.

3. Wright, draft

4. Beltran, FA

5. Davis, draft

6. Duda, draft

7. Thole, draft

8. Emaus, rule 5

9. Pelfrey, draft

Anyone notice the difference?  Anyone blind?

Obviously assuming health, Bay and Johan would be added to the mix.  However, what it may show is perhaps the Mets have not been as bad at drafting as previously and they may be much farther along in the “rebuilding” phase than we think.

“However, what it may show is perhaps the Mets have not been as bad at drafting as previously and they may be much farther along in the “rebuilding” phase than we think.”

We will not know the truth to that statement until we see how they perform. So either it will be true (which would be awesome) or there will be backlash about not making any signings in the offense department.

I can’t stop looking at that 2010 lineup, pretty crazy…

Pretty awful, would be my description.

Hey that’s why I Cerroned it. I say perhaps and may.

        LOl and assumed…

    LOL…anyone blind?

    LGM!!!!!

Did you know that ESPN-NY is doing a Top 50 Yankees?

Ha! I laugh at you ESPN! You have Andrew Marchand, we have the Orange man! You have Adam Ruben, we have TRS! Suck on it!

This is a little misleading, though. Part of the reason the 2010 Opening Day lineup looks like that is because Reyes and Beltran were hurt. And Pagan was set to platoon with GMJ. The Opening Day lineup is really rather irrelevant.

In any event, Reyes was not a draft pick. He was an “international free agent signing.”

Lastly, this analysis almost sounds as if you prefer Pelfrey to Santana.

And “Murphy, draft” was also hurt. Put “Murphy, draft” and “Reyes, draft” (sic) and “Beltran, FA” in the lineup and it looks much better.

    2. TRS86

I should have caught that on Reyes. Knew it but tried to throw it together too quickly.

Of course you can say so and so was hurt and should have been playing. However, that’s part of the post. Not only is it nice to see so many players that the Mets drafted, including Reyes for this point, but also that Reyes, Beltran and Wright are in the opening day lineup. Pagan is not in a platoon and we have a 1B that is the “future” instead of a place holder.

Anyone see MLBTR author’s predictions for this year?

Howard Megdal predicts Brad Emaus for NL ROY.

    1. stickguy

and you people called me nuts predicting Duda for that honor.

    2. kistics

I saw the predictions but completely missed Emaus. I really hope that’s the case

      1. metsfan4decades

What does Megdal know about Emaus that we don’t? That’s what I’d like to know.

        1. stickguy

nothing. Isn’t he the dude that ran a campaign to be elected the new GM?

still, while I would be shocked to see him win, it is not that crazy to think he could have a good year, and finish in the top 5-10, is it? Maybe where Ike did last year?

what if he plays OK D, keeps the job all year, and ends up at .270/.360/.410, with 11 HRs and 65 RBIs? Does that get him within sniffing distance of the list? Is that even remotely plausible for him?

          1. Ceetar

Yes, and he contributes just about everywhere it seems. seems like a nice enough guy from the little I’ve met him.

A lot of people do actually like Emaus. It depends on what everyone else does. Freeman for the Braves seems to be the preseason favorite, but you just never know.

          2. metsfan4decades

            Yeah, Megdal as GM….that’s him.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see that. But I’d have to believe from everything I’ve read about Emaus – which includes barely getting the 2nd base position over the competition – that it has to be a long shot.

He gets ROY of the year, than that’s probably way more production out of 2nd base than anyone predicted and maybe we win on the high side of the predictions and are in the hunt for the WC.

Hey…. Chris Young, KRod, Wright with all star seasons, Reyes, the Reyes of old, Bay gets his butt back on the field and puts up numbers he’s was paid for, Dickey repeats, Niese finishes strong, Pagan even better, Thole surprises, strong BP and you just never know.

            I can dream.

          3. stickguy

MF, the only thing on your list that is remotely a reach is Young, and that still is not impossible.

the rest are somewhere in the spectrum from normal expectations, to certainly reasonable to contemplate!

          4. metsfan4decades

Wasn’t Young an all star one year?
Maybe his injury problems are behind him and he’ll be solid this year.

          5. stickguy

Maybe 2007, or 2006. He had a huge first half that year.

who knows. Based on the spring, I suppose it is possible, I just put that one more in the wishful thinking (a big surprise) category.

  6. stickguy

Hey, wasn’t there supposed to be a post up today for us to make predictions or vote on options?

  7. metsfan4decades

I see the Braves won their opener. Both teams only had 5 hits but Braves got 2 runs out of theirs.

    1. stickguy

damn. I actually forgot that the season started today. For some teams.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Yankees just won too. Boo.

        1. stickguy

wasn’t granderson hurt all spring, like Beltran? hope that doesn’t last.

Good thing 4/5th of their rotation are likely to throw up a stinker any time out.

I hate the Yankees. Not as much as the phillies though.
