Ted Berg Again Shows Why He May Be Too Rational To Be a Blogger

Does Mike Pelfrey suck now?

Great job Ted, lots of reasons that people can suggest and make up for Pelfrey.  Instead of buying into those right away why not be  “willing to give Pelfrey a few more starts to get the kinks worked out before I call him a head case and suggest he’s the new Oliver Perez.”?

I love Ted Berg’s blog. I read him regularly. If anyone does, they’d know he loves Beltran and loves to make fun of Hamels.

well, the answer is yes, depending on how big a sample you look at!

the small sample of this year, he is horrid.

the bigger sample of his career on the road vs. the NL east, he is pretty much pitching to his career norms! He has never pitched well on the road vs. division foes.

last 4 years, 20 starts. 2-11, 6.85 ERA. So yes, in that case, he sucks.

Just listening to Boomer and Carton podcast. Interesting point they brought up. In Pelf’s post game interview, he basically said he was basically throwing pitches that Thole called which were mostly curveballs.

Thole on the other hand said that Pelf kept on falling behind in the count and he couldn’t call the FB every time he was behind.

    Very interesting…

Yes, I was questioning in a previous thread this ‘issue’ between pitcher and catcher.

Pelf more or less said Thole was calling these pitches but it’s on him to shake him off if it’s not following his game plan or isn’t the pitch that he thinks should be thrown.

Thole’s interview said it wasn’t that he was per say missing his spots, that the breaking ball was fine but they were hitting it.

There’s more to these two interviews (especially Pelf stating he wasn’t pitching to his ‘game) but I’m translating this to mean different type pitches were called for in many of the situations last night and weren’t thrown. Question is:

      - was the bench calling the game?
      - was Thole calling the game?
      - why WASN’T Pelf calling his game, for the most part?

And since Pelf did admit he got away from ‘my game’, why didn’t he pitch to his strengths? Why was he throwing pitches that were wrong for the particular batter/count?

      So many questions….no answers.

I’m leaning towards a confidence issue. Pelf didn’t have enough confidence to shake Thole off and throw what

Didn’t GKR say during one of the games, that it’s actually Thole calling the pitches? I thought I heard that TC was so impressed with Thole’s game calling, it’s really Thole who’s calling the games?

I said a couple of years ago I thought he’d be out of baseball by the time he was 30.
He’s got talent but not the drive or dedication to do what’s necessary.
