Of New York town!
And with that said ….HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Middle reliever from the ’75 season, Mac Scarce is 62 (1949). Mac was obtained from the Philadelphia Phillies along with catcher John Stearns that off season for Tug McGraw. He pitched in only one game for the Mets before being traded to the Reds for middle reliever, Tom Hall
Happy 57th birthday Hall of Fame catcher, Gary Carter (1954) !!!! He may be more recognizable from your years as a Montreal Expo, but you were the missing offensive force that helped propel us to the World Series in ’86.
Mets middle reliever from 1995 and again from ’01-’02, Pete Walker is 42 (1969).
One of the biggest reasons why the Mets made it to the ’00 World Series – outfielder, Timo Perez is 36 (1975). He is also one of the biggest reasons why the Mets lost the ’00 World Series !
One of Omar Minaya’s many draft busts, minor league reliever, Eddie Kunz is 25 (1986)
The New York Mets traded minor league pitcher, Chris DeWitt to the Chicago Cubs for utility man and reliable pinch hitter, Matt Franco on April 8, 1996.
The Cleveland Indians claimed middle reliever, Jason Anderson of the New York Mets on waivers on April 8, 2004.
Just so you know. I along with my wife and Mo Vaughn will be sitting in the Pepsi Porch section 305 row 12. Come on over and say hi if you would like, but please do not feed the Mo Vaughn !!!!

nothing like opening day.
and on the minor league opening day, the mets get a dominant performance from matt harvey in St. Lucie (High A) and Fernando Martinez gets started right (4 for 5) for Buffalo.

call up F mart. He’s ready.
only half joking here. He looked locked in and much more mature as a player all spring. So it might not take long.

Lets leave him there until Beltran is traded in July at least.

well, that qualifies as not long in my book (depending on when in July). The bigger question is, what happens if Beltran hits the DL for an extended period in say a month.
I also don’t feel (as some do) that F Mart has to play a couple of years straight without a day off before getting a chance to come up again. If he is raking, and on the field, who cares if he only “proved” he could do it for 2-3 months, instead of a full season?

It will be Duda then would be my guess. Which is why when he plays he has been playing RF.

I never understood that Tug McGraw trade.
Wish I was going to Citi today for Opening Day. For those that are, here’s hoping RA gives another stellar performance and goes deep in the game. I’d prefer not to see the BP today, for the most part.

I know it’s still very early, but here’s something I’ve noticed from TC this season.
He emphasizes very very strongly that he’s going to be a player’s manager. He has mentioned over and over that he has players’ back, etc etc. He was trying to earn players’ trusts when handling Castillo and Ollie that he gave his word in fair competition. I saw that he was communicating really well with his players.
Here’s my thing. Do you think that this approach may hurt the team’s chances of winning? What I mean by that, is he trusting his guys too much that even if the players don’t perform well, he’ll still go to those guys?
For example, 2nd game in Philly where Boyer gave up 3 runs. I know Boyer pitched well but got unlucky and gave up 2 runs. But was TC putting him out there one more inning because he felt that Boyer was the best choice there? Or was it because that TC wanted to earn Boyer’s trust? Or another example. There were couple double switches (or pinch hits) where I said “Really??”. Some of his moves worked out well where other moves didn’t. I wonder if these double switches (and/or pinch hits) were really to win the game or to have players get the playing time that they were promised.
Am I reading too much into it? Probably….

Reading way too much into it. All managers try to be active the beginning of the year getting guys time and keeping them fresh. Also, I think he stayed with Boyer mostly because of match-ups and what inning it was. Did not bother me as he was throwing the ball well enough.

You are probably right and TC deserves the benefit of doubt right now. I guess we’re just used to seeing Jerry’s idiotic moves…

also, they are more likely to stretch a pen guy an extra inning when the SP comes out so early. really managing a different game at that point.

Early on is different, although Willie got criticized for things like that too. He’d manage the game differently in April than in August and September. He challenged guys and learned who he could trust. Of course, once he established that trust it was hard to get him off of it, but I like the idea of giving guys every opportunity to succeed early on.

I liked the Jerry plan. If a guy has 1 good game, you guarantee him he will pitch in at least the next 8 in a row. Then repeat.

fair or not, the last 17 games of 2007 cemented his fate.
