Looking For A Silver Lining? Look At The Mets Pen.

Also according to Baseball-Reference over that span the pen has inherited 6 baserunners and allowed 2 of them to score.

Is this supposed to make me feel good? 4 games, 3HRs given up. Not trying to go all glass half empty on you. Beato seems to be the real deal. Parnell needs a demotion something fierce.

    And our closer… sigh.

I guess if you look at it glass half empty then you are right 4 games 3 hrs.

      This is what I see.

A mandate to throw strikes and not walk people especially at Citi where HR’s go to die. So yes 3 solo hr’s but the walks look to be down with a 4 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio in the last 4 games.

Still not where you want it but far far better from where it was. At least for me who admittedly is like the title says is looking for a silver lining.

yeah, K rate is nice. walks are down. nice trend.

Here they are now over last 5 games not including Capuano & Dickey:
            15.1/IP 10/H 5/R 5/ER 4/HR 6/BB 19/SO 6/IH 2/IS

Here they are now over last 5 games including Capuano & Dickey:
            16.2/IP 11/H 5/R 5/ER 6/BB 20/SO 8/IH 2/IS

what about the closer? he pitched once in that stretch (mop up get work duty) and 3 times all year. It is like he does not exist.

      1. njstuckintx

whether he’s used everyday or not, I want to see better out of our closer.

Silver linings are for fans that accept the failings and perpetual black cloud portrayals of their teams and as such have zero indicatory or intrinsic value regarding the future success or continued failures of those teams.

As a diehard baseball fan and more directly a lifelong Mets fan, I look for overall successes and team accomplishments and put little stock into the statistics of individuals or subsets of the team especially in small sample size evaluations

Propagation of statistics relating to the bullpen (subset) over a 4 game span (2 doubleheaders …ridiculously small sample size) of 14 innings of which 64% (9) could be deemed “mop up” (innings during which the Mets trailed by 2 runs or more) is more wishful thinking than even a “silver lining”.

The fact that on Sunday the manager used 2 starters, his closer and only 1 other spreadsheet referenced bullpen member does even less to provide any glimmer or inference that he bullpen will be anything more than questionable.

Sorry Ed…Disagree with use of such inane statistics…but nice try

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. That is what this is all about sharing ideas and opinions.
Of course no one will ever agree 100% with everything but by sharing our thoughts we may get different perspectives that may have never been considered at how we look at things.
I of course after reading what you wrote don’t share your outlook but I can see based on your explanation why you would see this the way you do.

Again thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
        Lets Go Mets!

TC was managing this game like it was an absolute must win/do or die type game. Which….wasn’t far from the truth – lol.

He said he went to Cap b/c the small sample size against Chipper in the past yielded like one hit only against Cap. O.K., it worked.

He said he went with RA to get a completely different look out there in the 7th against their batters. Kind of shake it up some. O.K., it worked.

The fact that TC felt the need to go to 2 starters after Gee tells us all we need to know right now about the state of the BP.

Here’s hoping it stabilizes some and very soon. Then again, getting 7 strong from the starters would help.

        1. stickguy

it is more about the state of the rotation, the pen has been used more than it should.

The only silver lining is CHANGE.

Moving Thole into the 2 spot was nice.

Too bad we don’t have anyone to replace the awful Pagan.

Is he among the game’s top five OF yet? I wonder….

    1. fongy2

A-friggin-men on Pagan! We’re we right on this guy Brock or what?
They should have gone the Branch Rickey way with him and trade him a yr too soon while he had maximum value.
Also, you might recall I advocated hitting Thole 2 as far back as last
September. It’s not gonna help overall though….I felt this team in S.T. had the feel of one of our late 70s, early 80s teams…..
And while I long for that period in my life, I can “life and death” another one of those type teams. I’ve never felt this disinterested in
      my Mets…Ever! …………Again, it’s gonna be a long season………
Pus the heartache has just begun! ……..Wait until July when we deal Reyes and Pelfrey! ………….It’s getting late, early………..

Should have read “I can’t life and death”
