The Sunday Question

I’m not saying the Sandy Alderson should do this yet but just for the sake of it, let’s put this question on the table.

If your going to have a fire sale before the Trade Deadline, who goes and who stays?  (Let’s assume that you can find a taker for all the players)

I don’t think it is an If. Just a matter of how deep. Unless, of course, they get straightened out quickly and climb back into contention (a nice 8-2 run will get them back in the mix!)

but if they hit double digits back by June, and have no legs, I think the guys obviously in play will be:

Young, Capuano, Paulino, Beltran, Buchhol, and K Rod. These are the guys that are on 1 year deals, and not part of any future, so can all go.

The next tier will be Bay (more wishful thinking I guess!), Pelf, pagan and Dickey. These are much less likely to go, since they are controlled for at least 1 more year. Bay also because of his nasty contract.

Not all of these guys would go of course, just whichever ones get the best return. And the 2nd tier can get messy, since it sends a different message (we are broke, and are gutting to the studs to rebuild on the ultra cheap). the 1st group makes sense, in a “this isn’t our year, so we are collecting as much young talent and will be making a run in 2012″ way.

Wright would be a cosmic shift, last resort.

I left off Reyes because I think they will keep him, and either resign him (mid-year or end) or take the picks.

I’m pretty much with you. I’d see what the rentals will get back, ie Young & Cap.

Beltran is a must. Someone will take a flyer on him and getting anything is better than the nothing they’ll get from him otherwise.

I’d dangle Pelf and Pagan. Would prefer to keep these guys, but if someone is offering something nice, I’d say go for it. Same for Krod. His contract is a proverbial millstone around this teams neck, but he’s still very very good. Only decent arm in the Bullpen. If someone offers something solid, fantastic. Otherwise, I’m content with an overpaid closer for 1 year.

I’ll wait to comment on Bay until after he’s played a week or 2. His contract is not pretty, and I’d hate to trade him away for pennies on the dollar if he still has some gas in the tank.

I hope you are right on Reyes. I do NOT want to see him traded, and if he does go elsewhere, I’d think those 2 picks would be what Alderson would want.

And as far as untouchables, I’d say Ike, Wright, Niese would pretty much be it at this point. Include Reyes in that group as well. Probably would be good to kick the tires on the extension talks, eh?

If the team is this bad by the end of the month then it’s time to move some players to get max trade value. If the team does not want to resign Reyes they will be able to get a lot more in May than in July.

As for someone like Bay I want to see him play first. If he can get back to his old self then why get rid of him for the sake of getting rid of him.

For guys like Beltran and KROD, let them walk. Getting something back and start changing the makeup of this team. This “down in the dumps” crap we’ve seen since 07 needs to get expelled.

So my only off limits guy is Wright and I don’t feel it makes sense to move Pelf. But who cares about moving Beltran in a walk year and giving Duda the ab’s to see if he can hang. I think the team would have a major attitude adjustment getting rid of the walkers and bringing up Mejia, and Duda.

I can not – and will not answer that question – this team is still in it and I hope will continue to be until after the deadline.

      OK Ceetar.

I don’t have much more to add to what Stick and NJTX have stated. That’s pretty much my mindset right now.

Of course, I’d like nothing more than to see them turn this around and quick. But even if they were hovering around contention come trade deadline, it still makes sense to try and trade all those that won’t be, or shouldn’t be, a part of the future.
