This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Stanley We Hardly Knew Ya !!” Edition 04-23-11

"Please send donations in lieu of Flowers to me !"

Yes my fellow Mets fans it pains me to say this, but we have lost a valuable member of the Mets family yesterday. This  member of the Mets bullpen staff was thought to be invaluable since  Spring training commenced two months ago. But Mets C.O.O. – Jeff Wilpon-  sensing that a shakeup was needed, ordered pitching coach, Dan Warthern to cut ties with this new yet beloved member of the teams extended family.

Yes I am afraid to say this but Stanley the toolbox has ceased to exist. Jeff Wilpon has had him melted smashed, trashed and melted down in the hopes that it sends a message to the seemingly lethargic bullpen !

Stanley has been replaced by long time bullpen member , Hello Kitty as the device that rookie reliever, Pedro Beato must lug around before the start of every game.

Thank you for New York Times writer, David Waldstein for the insight of this sad turn of events. To read his column, click here

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes :

Today would have marked Warren Spahn’s 90th birthday (1921). By the time he came to the Mets he was a part time player/pitching coach. He pitched so horrendously that the Mets traded him midway through the season to the San Francisco Giants.

Utility infielder fromt he ’63 season, Duke Carmel is 74(1937) .

Reserve outfielder from the ’00 season, Jason Tyner is 34 (1977) .

Fire balling middle reliever from the ’06 season, Henry Owens is 32 (1979) . He was traded to the Marlins along with reliever Matt Lindstrom for pitchers Adam Bostick and Jason Vargas after the ’06 season. Many fans still kill Omar Minaya for the move.

Sadly on this date in 1992, coach from the ’81 team, Deron Johnson passed away.

The New York Mets traded utility infielder, Chico Fernandez and minor league catcher, Bobby Catton to the Chicago White Sox for utility man, Charley Smith on April 23, 1964.

The New York Mets claimed middle reliever , Jeff Kaiser on waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on April 23, 1993.

The New York Mets signed free agent reserve outfielder, Gerald Williams on April 23, 2004.

Mo Vaughn will be performing ” Singing In The Rain ” before the start of today’s game !!!!

Totally random morning nonsense in my household:

My daughter asked who invented the metric system. Of course, the Mrs answer:

    Mr. Met.
