Mejia Fully Tears MCL: Surgery Likely

Jenrry Mejia has fully torn his MCL, and according to his first doctor’s opinion, he will need surgery. Mejia will seek a second opinion as the surgery could delay his return to baseball by a full year.

Mejia had pitched 28.1 innings for AAA Buffalo this season as a starter, to an ERA of 2.86 while striking out 21 batters.

Very unfortunate. This will really hurt his development as he could have been ready to make a big impact at the major league level by late in the year or at least the beginning of next year. This could push back full time major league duty to 2013.

well, this sucks. Then again, it is the Mets we are talking about, so is it really that unexpected?

thanks to the magic of Bing, this does appear to be what gets repaired with TJ surgery. So figure he gets that soon, and by early next year is throwing. 2012 then becomes a rebuild/rehab year, and he will start 2013 pretty much where he started this season!

i read a bit of the backround and studies. pretty interesting stuff, especially studies about causation (with total pitches thrown being the highest, not how hard or what types).

basically the ligament just wears out (frays/tears), so hopefully with a nice fresh one, he can still have a career.

and there does not seem to be anything to support the sandy-haters that are already blaming him for converting the guy back into a starter, after he *gasp* spent 3 whole months in the pen, pitching 30 or so innings. Hell, if anything, it probably delayed the problem!

Yikes, that sucks a lot. Let’s just hope he heals quick and is able to come back strong when he’s healthy. It’s really too bad that he loses a year of development, a lot of us were hoping to see him in Queens at the start of next year, if not September this year.

Well…this is indeed unfortunate news. Feel bad for the kid.

I don’t remember where I saw it but it was an online article dealing with predicting which pitchers are likely to need elbow/arm surgery sooner rather than later. Had something to do with the throwing mechanics, release point and some inverted W theory. It was long and complicated but what stuck in my mind was the mention of and use of certain pitchers that did have a problem (Strasburg was one mentioned) and those who will likely have a problem – of which one was Mejia.

Murphy takes out Osama, Al Qaida retaliates, takes out Mejia’s MCL. It’s a crazy, crazy world.
