Post-Game: This is the Game That Never Ends…

Yes, it goes on and on my friends
Someone started playing it, not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue playing it forever just because,
This is the game that never ends
Yes, it goes on and on my friends
Someone started playing it, not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue playing it forever just because…

Okay, enough of that. Fair warning – I’m slightly delirious due to studying for a final exam all day and having quite the exciting night. Osama’s dead (thanks troops!) and the Mets took 14 innings to score 2 runs and avoid the sweep in Philadelphia.

Several hours ago Chris Young pitched 7 shut-out, 2-hit innings for the Mets and Cliff Lee allowed only 1 run in his 7 innings for the Phillies. However, the Phillies tied up the game in the bottom of the 8th inning, and no more scoring would come until the 14th! A string of hits capped off by Paulino’s very clutch 5 hit of the game gave the Mets a 1-run lead. Taylor Buchholz wrapped up the game for the Mets, retiring the Phillies batters without a hiccup in two straight innings and getting the Mets their first victory in four days.

The Mets come home to face the reigning World Series champs, San Francisco, on Tuesday.

    Very nice, Prismo.

This was a night of Win/Win. Mets take the final game of the series and the bad man is now dead.

It was the Ronnie Paulino and Met pitchers show.

Thanks to the handful of my fellow Met fans that stayed in the Dugout watching with me until the end.

    USA! USA!! USA! USA!

I gave up around the 11th. Had been a long weekend already and I was beat.

But glad to know a few of you kept the flame alive until the end.

ended up being an OK but frustrating road trip. And at least over the last couple series, they are doing what a team is supposed to do. play .500 on the road, and .666 at home!

I watched, but I was sick all weekend and told myself it’s just one game, go to bed and get some rest. I did close my eyes after the top of each inning but the 14th but kept opening them to watch. Probably should’ve just stayed up in the dugout. heh.

I think at the end it was me, Prismo and TK left.
TK kept us entertained telling us Game=Over every inning the Phils got on.

        1. Ceetar

probably better I didn’t stay then, I would’ve gotten annoyed at him.

USA! USA! USA! Very memorable game.

As to Osama, I am not surprised they finally tracked him down, but I am completely dumbfounded that the secret was kept under wraps like it was. Supposedly dead for a week, and I don’t recall 1 wiff of a rumor on the internet. Truly amazing.

certainly a big win, for pride if nothing else. And some sort of (moral) victory that other than the big doofus on Friday, the Met pitching staff pretty much went toe to toe with the vaunted Phils and held their own.

That big dope is going to be getting a trip to AAA to work out his issues pretty soon if he doesn’t snap out of it. I am starting to believe that he really is a ollie type headcase guy (a good arm, and no clue what to do with it. Plus no internal fortitude).

    1. Ceetar

I don’t think that’s it at all, but he does need to pick it up. I expect him to though, that’s sorta his pattern. And he was pitching with the flu and weakness. Can’t have helped.

      1. metsfan4decades

Being sick probably didn’t help but I don’t t think that was his main problem. He pitched well when he first became sick that night. It was the following game – which was Fri. night, that he really looked awful. I keep wondering reading all the analysis on what his problems might be, why Warthen can’t seem to get through to him.

        1. Ceetar

Well the difference is the first start he was merely uncomfortable, a week later he was 11 pounds lighter and physically weak.

It’s not an excuse for poor performance, but you’re not going to look to replace him off that start either. (And he got burned by babip, which is part of the issue with not striking guys out and why he has to avoid walking guys whether intentionally or not)

Well Warthen is hopeless i think. Pelfrey’s been pitching differently this year with the whole “can’t get the sink” thing. we’ll see how it goes next time out, supposedly it was coming around.

          1. stickguy

the problem is, he stunk royally in his starts before he got sick.

I also agree that Warthen does not seem to be adding any particular value to guys that have been here. Should have gone for a clean sweep and fresh perspective this off season, and ditched him too.

          2. njstuckintx

            agreed.

That big dufus needs to get himself shipped off to another team come June/July. I can’t see him being in the Mets long term plans. he gets paid too much for what he’s been bringing to the table. I know he brings 200 innings. I know there is a lack of SP depth with this team. I know, I know, I know… He’s practically not even a 3! Money could be spent better than on Pelf, I’m telling you.

      1. TRS86

If he continues pitching like this, of course he is not worth the money nor would he be a 200 inning guy. IF he is a 200 inning guy again then that means he would be pitching much better and most likely would be worth the money. Netting 4 innings a night will not get you 200 innings.

      2. stickguy

very curious to see what they could get for him, assuming he stabalizes and pitches at least normally. Plenty of teams desperate for pitching, that will figure they can get all the hidden potential out of him.

Could easily seeing him go to St. louis, and finally putting it all together. Yoda like pitching coach, friendly midwestern atmosphere and fans, absolutely the perfect place for him.

        1. TRS86

Again, as with some of our other guys, not sure you get the value you would need for him considering replacement cost. I think Mejia would have to show he is ready before you could just “dump” Pelfrey. Now if someone was willing to give you top value? Sure but why would they?

  4. stickguy

also, after hearing reports he was getting shots last year before every start (was that true?), would not surprise me in the least if he gets shut down at some point, and it turns out he has been pitching hurt.

    1. metsfan4decades

That entered my mind as well.
However, his velocity does not seem to be a problem. Watching him, it seems to be pitch selection most times and pitch location to a certain extent. Wouldn’t that indicate less an injury and more a game plan type of thing?

      1. stickguy

I’m no doctor of course, but it seems that certain injuries don’t really take away velocity as much as control and “action”, especially on pitches other than a normal FB. Not sure if that comes from altering mechanics to compensate?

        1. metsfan4decades

Could very well be. And that would go a long way towards explaining why he can’t seem to duplicate his success yet from last year.

I think his next start will be very telling.

          1. TRS86

But then again, last year he WAS injured.

          2. stickguy

can only get by pitching damaged for so long. Ask John Maine about it!

          3. TRS86

Again, Maine had a huge dip in velocity.

BTW I love the Lambchop’s Play Along tribute but i kept stopping at the word “know”. Shouldn’t it had read like this?

This is the game that never ends
Yes, it goes on and on my friends
Someone started playing it, not knowing what it was
And they’ll continue playing it forever just because,

    1. Prismo

      You’re correct – I said I was delirious!

  6. stickguy

noticed something interesting (well, to me), related to the debate about whether the Mets are in or out of the “race” for the playoffs.

right now, in the NL, there is only 1 team not leading a division that is over .500 (the marlins). Every other team is .500 or below.

Fla will tail off at some point, so the NL WC race could get quite interesting this year. And the more teams in it, the better off you are if you want to trade a few pieces!

  7. kistics

I would give Pelf 3 more starts before any kind of moves.

I’m not trying to give excuse for him or anything, but of the 6 starts 4 of them were against NL East on the road.
