Post Game: Giants Last Man Standing

Mets locked up with the defending champs of baseball tonight and what do ya know…it turned into a slug fest. Carlos Beltran got the party started with a 3 run home run in the 1st. The Giants came back and tied it with 3 singles to drive in 3 runs in the 3rd. Mets would get back on top with an Ike “every day RBI” Davis home run in the bottom 3rd. The Giants would tie the game with a Burris ground out to score Schierholtz in the 4th and go ahead with a Schierholtz home run in the 6th. Mets would storm right back with a Jose Reyes RBI single in the 6th.

The game took a dramatic climax in the 9th. Francisco Rodriguez came in relief of Izzy and gave up a single to Burris who promptly stole 2nd base. Ford would reach on a bunt that also moved Burris to 3rd. With runners on 1st and 3rd with 0 out, Krod gets Rowand to pop out in foul ground for the 1st out. Krod kept it coming against Tejada and got him to pop out on the infield for the 2nd out. Krod would walk Fontenot to load the bases but gets Buster Posey to fly out to center for the 3rd out. The drama wouldnt let up in the Mets half of the 9th. David Wright greeted Giants pitcher Lopez with a double to lead off the inning. Carlos Beltran would get intentionally walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 0 out. Ike Davis..I *bleep* you not came up to BUNT…you read that correctly…Ike Davis set himself up for the sacrifice bunt which went foul. Lopez fired again and Davis hit a textbook double play ball to Burris…that got MISPLAYED and Burris made an emergency shovel to 1st to get Davis out but this put Wright on 3rd with 1 out. The Giants elected to walk Willie Harris…again you read that correctly…OUR Willie Harris to load the bases for Josh Thole who had 3 hits in the game. Obviously Bruce Bochy knew the perfect strategic play to end a Met rally would be to put us in a bases loaded situation and right on queue, Josh Thole grounded into a double play.

However, with all the excitement of the 9th inning and the Mets first back to back extra inning game since 2009, Taylor Buckholtz anti climatically let up a solo home run to Aubrey Huff to put the Giants ahead but “recovered” to retire the rest of the side. Brian “the beard” Wilson came in and retired the first two hitters before giving up a base hit to Jose Reyes. Jose must have thought his single bought him an admission ticket stayed put on 1st to watch Daniel Murphy strike out to end the game.

Love Bruce Willis. The Mets lately? Not so much.

I swear I don’t know which manager wanted to lose this game more tonight. Obviously, TC won that battle. Bunting with Ike? Really?

RA Dickey starting to make me nervous.
Thole not looking too sharp yet this year, especially behind the plate.
    Our bench sux.

And where the heck are we getting pitching from next year?

I swear the first person that tells me ‘from a trade with Reyes’, I’m taking out my six shooter.

“And where the heck are we getting pitching from next year?”

      Trading Reyes?

      :-)

I am confident you cannot hit me from 250+ miles away……

Hey, it’s not big deal, the Phils and Marlins are overperforming and Collins is focused on setting up the rotation for the first round of the playoffs.

    Ike bunting there?

of all the strange moves this year, that was one of the strangest. Just because of who it was.

There’s at least one moment in every game where I’m baffled by a Jerry Collins move.

I don’t know where all these managers lost their brains, but there must be SOMEONE out there who knows strategy.

And I doubt Backman is the answer to that question. He doesn’t seem like the sharpest tool in the shed.

And no, I’m not saying to fire Terry right now. This team doesn’t have the talent to win the division regardless of their manager.

Just saying this stuff pisses me off.

Can we please just let Hu go? He’s putting this team at a disadvantage. It’s down a hitter. I would have rather seen Young up to bat that Hu. If it’s because we don’t have a back up SS, just make Reyes play every day. If Reyes gets hurt, through Super Murph in there to finish the game then bring up Tejada.

Hu, if you are reading this, you blow. Go back to LA.

turner can play SS. No need for Hu for that reason.

Sandy did his best to fill out the bench under what we later found out to be severe economic restrictions. Any transaction that Sandy pursues will likewise be subject to the Wilpon’s financial woes. We may very well have to live with the Hu’s of the world.

We don’t even have to live with Hu right now. As previously mentioned Turner can man SS. You don’t need a defense only SS on the roster for the 1 day off every month that Reyes gets. As for having a defensive replacement for Murphy, he’s holding his own there and it’s risky to take him out because of his offense. Not to mention that in an emergency Harris can play 2B as well.

exactly. This team needs a potential HR threat off the bench. Not a ‘get a hit once in a blue moon, Jim Abbott has a better chance of getting on base” type of guy.

And honestly, his D is not Rey-Rey-esque. i would have thought with all the quick actions that Sandy is about, Hu would be gone by now.

Or maybe Hu stays because he generates much needed revenue from the large Asian community in Queens etc.
