Last Night on the Farm – 5/3/11

Slow night on the farm as St. Lucie had the night off and Binghamton was washed out.  Let’s see what did happen.

Lehigh Valley 3, Buffalo 2

Pat Misch had a solid outing (6 IP, hits, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) but did not factor into the decision.  Jose de la Torre gave up a run in the 7th to take the loss.  Rueben Tejada had another good night, going 2 for 4 with an RBI.  And Nick Evans got to play third!  He also contributed with a 2 for 5 effort.

Erie @ Binghamton – Rained Out

Lakewood 4, Savannah 3

The Sand Gnats got three runs in the first inning, all coming on a Sam Honeck bases clearing double.  After seeing their output, the Savannah offense patted themselves on the back, said “Job well done” and took the rest of the night off.  They managed only three singles the rest of the way.  Chase Huchingson took the loss, but he didn’t deserve it.  In three innings of relief work, he gave up two unearned runs (one of which came on a passed ball by Albert Cordero).

Wonder if Tejada is truly learning how to hit down there?

Just wondering since it’s probable he’ll be Reyes’ replacement rest of this year if they do trade him..

    1. stickguy

not really overall. A few good games, but still middling numbers, and nothing to indicate he is ready to come up and be a legit, productive ML starter.

I may just refuse to watch if they jettison Reyes mid season to save money, and Tejada is the best replacement they can come up with.

I hear you, but you know what would add to my ‘extreme disappointment’ if they trade Reyes?……spending even a few million dollars this year to bring in some less crappy mediocre ML middle IF to take over. Save the money while they go over the reassessment process.

If they’re going to trade Reyes, then the white flag with the big B for rebuilding has been raised. Unless some opportunity falls in their lap, I just assume they do stick Tejada out there for the rest of the year. I mean, you can’t get much lower than last place, right?

Here comes the #1 lottery pick!

          1. kistics

i meant to say #1 draft pick.

the wilpons are going to have heart failure, just thinking of how much that could cost.

It will, however, be an interesting test. Best talent, cost be damned, or a nice 22 YO college senior with no eligibility left, that will be shocked to be picked so high?

          3. metsfan4decades

I can’t wait to see how this year’s draft goes.

If it did happen, so be it. Better to know what you are and go about fixing it than pretend to be something you are not and try selling it like it’s the greatest.

Unfortunately, everything is a moot point until the finances is sorted out. if we know this team is a 70 Mil or a 90 Mil or a 130 Mil team, that will explain it to us all.

And if the team is broke because of Madoff and team Wilpon, a lot of people are going to leave the ranks until that is sorted or they have sold.

Flipping Astros fans laugh at me down here.

        3. stickguy

oh, if they trade Reyes, no way I see them spending money to bring anyone else in. That would be an even bigger slap in the fans face, meaning there is nothing in the system even vaguely resembling a viable replacement.

I don’t think the numbers are as important as how he is going about it. Does he realize that he’s not a power hitter and therefore trying to hit the ball on the ground, move up runners, and learning how to hit in different situations. Those are the things he has to do, and not just put up big numbers, because I just don’t think he will ever overwhelm anybody in that department, but if you have a guy that can make contact, hit in situations, and play defense the way he can you might be able to live with that at SS.

        1. metsfan4decades

I agree. I don’t think anyone is mistaking Tejada for a power hitter. I got the impression they were hoping for a creditable contact hitter.

I’ve been reading though he’s made several errors so far this young season. Yikes!

          1. Bryan

Sometimes talented defensive players make more errors in the minor leagues because they are playing with guys who are no where close to the same level as they are and not expecting them to try certain things. We can’t really know without seeing some of the errors on video or in person. I’m sure we all remember Anderson Hernandez as an excellent defensive MI. When he was in AAA in the Mets organization he had a frightfully high number of errors, probably higher than Tejada does now, but it’s not because he forgot how to catch and throw the ball overnight (like Chuck Knobloch) the stats just got skewed.

Listening to the Mad Dog (Giants Fan). His take on the Reyes trade is: why on earth should the Giants bail out the Mets and give them a good position player that will have no impact on the team anyway. If they want a decent prospect fine but with the amount of money Reyes will attract why should the Giants give up anything.

    1. metsfan4decades

Not quite sure I understand Mad Dog’s logic there.

‘Help the Mets’? The Giants would get 1/2 of Reyes as well as the draft pick(s) when he walks, right? It’s not like it’s all one sided.

And memo to Mad Dog…I think we’re looking for pitching, not a position player.

      1. saltygary

Using the word position player was my fault. He was saying things like there is no way the Giants should ever give a player like Cain to the Mets for a rental. Even if the Mets got Cain it wouldn’t help them this season and next so it would be a waste. If they want a prospect great but would be leery of handing over one of their best ones.

The bail out point was to say the Giants are in the position of power and its the Mets that have to sell off pieces so why should any team pay top dollar. The Mets will be desperate to move some pieces.

        1. metsfan4decades

That makes more sense. And yeah, we’re not getting Cain for 1/2 year of Reyes. Can’t blame Mad Dog for that rant there.

    2. kingman 26

Uh, help me with what this is supposed to mean?

And I again thank satellite radio for taking Maddog to a place where I NEVER have to hear his incredibly ridiculous whiny voice.

  3. njstuckintx

    Uh, Beato to the DL?

    1. njstuckintx

It seriously is like an 18 car pile up. CAN’T. KEEP. FROM. LOOKING….

    2. metsfan4decades

Oh for crying out loud…..it just gets better and better.

Well, Izzy had tendinitis too right? Hopefully, it will only be 15 days.

      1. stickguy

beato has tendonitis? yuck. I don’t mind having the extra lefty finally, but not at the expense of one of the few good arms!

    3. kistics

That just came out of nowhere….

I really hope it’s not because of the 3 innings he pitched against the Phillies

      1. stickguy

what are these guys, complete babies? He is a Middle reliever, and former starter, has not been overworked, and did not throw all that many pitches that game.

anyone that can’t handle that shouldn’t be on a ML team.

  4. kistics

    This team needs this…

    Fast forward to 2:00

U of T baseball manager yelling at the team… Mets need this at times…

    1. saltygary

Well they sure could of used that talk on 07-08.

If I was in that room the coach probably would of swung at me. There would be no way for me to not laugh at that.
