Last Night on the Farm – 5/4/11

Happy Cinci de Mayo!  Another slow one last night on the farm as Buffalo and Savannah had the night off.

Erie 9, Binghamton 3

Robbie Carson kept the B-Met sin the game, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings, but the wheels came off for Edgar Ramirez in the 7th.  A combination of home runs, errors, and wild pitchers allowed the Sea Wolves to put up a 5 spot, effectively putting the game out of reach.  Roy Merritt also had a rough night, giving up two runs on four hits in an innings.  Brahaim Moldonado had a two run homer, but the b-Mets scattered most of their seven hits.

Bradenton 5, St. Lucie 2

Whatevs.  Let’s just get to what everyone wants to talk about.  Matt Harvey rebounded from being mauled by the Marauders his last time out.    His final line for the night was like so: 6.1 IP, 1 hit (!)  runs, 2 BB, 9 K’s.  Part of what teams look for in a player in the minors is how he deals with adversity.  Harvey really showed an impressive ability to bounce back here.  So far, his professional career could not have gotten off to a better start (yes, that includes getting bombed last time out).

Rhiner Cruz relieved Harvey and was rewarded with five unearned runs, including 2B Rylan Sandoval doing his best Luis Castillo.  In what’s becoming a disturbing system-wide trend, the PSL Mets only had three hits.  One of them was a triple by Angel Pagan, who later scored.

    Go Matt Harvey.
Wonder if he and Mejia will be joining the rotation at the same time now, due to Mejia’s injury.

I keep reading about poor, sloppy play throughout the Mets minor system. Given the fact that some of those brought up in the past couple of years for brief stints seemed to lack fundies on some level as well, here’s hoping they’ve got some plan down there when it comes to teaching these younguns’ the importance of sound fundamentals.

Harvey will be up (or should,, at this pace) well before Mejia.

Hell, Harvey could get a cup of coffee this September if he continues at this pace! And if not, he will arrive sometime next year.

My theory on pitchers is, there is a limited amount of bullets in the arm, so don’t waste them. If they show that they have everything working, move them up.

Figure another 4-5 starts and he will get promoted to Bingo (hey, in June, it often breaks 60!). And once you prove you can handle AA, the majors are in play.

so maybe a couple months in bingo, a ST invite, start at AAA and be up by May/June 2012?

Sloppy play is absolutely right. Last night: 2 games, 5 errors, and most of the runs given up were unearned. That’s scary, and it’s part of the reason why St. Lucie is skidding and why B-ham has struggled all year.

As for Harvey, it’ll be interesting to see how the organization handles him. I know they want to take their time with guys, but so far there’s no reason not to push Harvey and get him on the fast track. Aside from the weather, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be in Binghamton pdq.

I don’t think it is as much a culture thing (we don’t care if you can field, so play like crap!) as it is a player aquisition thing (draft/sign guys that play good D, and they likely continue to do so. Get bats with no glove, and this happens).

But, without seeing all the plays, hard to tell if it is on the players, the coaches, or both.

I think people forget that these guys have been playing BB at a very high level, year round, with lots of coaching for many years before they hit the pros (though that can vary for the young international signings). So it is not like they don’t already know the fundies, how to play a position, etc. and have to be taught all that.
