Mr. Owl how many quality pitches will Reyes see while sandwiched between two scrubs?

    1. njstuckintx

In four ABs, let me see… One… Two… Thrrrrreeee…. CRUNCH. Three.

      1. TRS86

        LOL great minds.

    2. TRS86

With Reyes, is this like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop? I am guessing regardless of who is behind Reyes he sees 3 pitches tops.

      1. kistics

at least he’ll draw walks…. or will he?

        1. TRS86

          Walks? What’s a walk?

          1. kistics

Hey he’s been drawing a lot more walks lately.. his OBP must like his career high

  2. metsfan4decades

I truly just do not understand TC’s thinking here. Not unless he’s trying to show the FO just how bad the pieces are on this team.

    1. stickguy

another classic Jerry move. “you gave me this crap, so I am going to keep running it out there to rub it in your face”.

I wonder if this is an intential 1 last chance before getting waived move?

but still, playing him is one thing, but hitting 2nd?

      1. metsfan4decades

LOL…I’ve got nothing. Just grasping at straws here.

There has been nothing to show Hu should be a starting piece in any lineup, let alone hitting 2nd.

  3. stickguy

well, now that he has officially been renamed JC, I can just dust off and reuse my “Fire Jerry” signs!

  4. kingman 26

Complete insanity starting a player like Hu.

    Just waving the white flag.

Why the HELL would you not just play Murphy if there is any thought of him being a long-term everyday 2Bman?

    1. TRS86

Unless there’s an injury it makes no sense. The ONLY thing I can think of is as said earlier. Hu this is your one chance don’t screw it up or you will be riding the Emaus express back to LA.

      1. kingman 26

Well, I hope this is what is going on–not the injury, the ride the rails out of town part.

I swear, are they TRYING to make it harder for us to watch and root?

I LIKE Murphy. I love his hustle, attitude, and willingness to do whatever the team wants, and frankly, he is doing a good job in the field.

He has some key hits, and might be the future 2Bman.

        Why sit him? It’s insanity.

Small sample size yes, but Hu has 16 PA and ONE SINGLE AND EIGHT Ks.

        1. TRS86

We don’t have to use that small sample to know that Hu can’t hit. We have his entire MLB and MILB career to base that on. No longer a small sample.

          1. kingman 26

            + Infinity

  5. TRS86

At least this proves that Jason Bay is not just going through the motions as he is coming back early just so he can be in today’s game. Granted if he could make it he should. That being said he technically had today off too and chose not to take it.

    1. kingman 26

      :-)

      Grasping here, but nice grasp!

If he has another RBI this year, that would be cool too.

      1. TRS86

Think it’s more grasping than you did with the 2 day mini-camp? Especially not knowing if the team would have even allowed him to attend?

        1. kingman 26

Definitely not, but just my opinion.

And for the umpteenth time, what I also was always saying was that he should have been to the main camp with Wright, early and eager to put 2010 behind him.

He didn’t, wasn’t in shape, got hurt and missed the first couple of weeks, and still can’t hit.

  6. Prismo

“Chin-Lung Hu, Scott Hairston and Willie Harris — the three bench players who have been with the club all season — have a combined .184/.264/.289 line in 114 at-bats. So far, Mets pitchers have a slightly higher OPS than Mets pinch hitters on the season.

I’m going to repeat that for emphasis: Mets pitchers have a better OPS than Mets pinch-hitters.” -the berg

    D:

    1. kingman 26

      Hu has 16 PA, one 1B, and 8 K.

      1. tkfj2

So you are saying I should not guarantee 2 hits for Hu today?

        1. kingman 26

Thin ice my friend, VERY thin ice….

    2. njstuckintx

They should run with 2 bench guys and add 3 more to the pen! The way they’ve been pitching, they could use the help and with the way the Bench is hitting, why the hell not?

    3. kistics

      ouch!

thought Hairston and Willie were supposed to hit for power as well…

  7. metsfan4decades

Just further proof of what I still feel was – and is – the biggest hole we’ve got so far this season, SP:

Visualizing NL East Starters through April (Mets fans, avert your eyes)

    http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/5/5/2153620/visualizing-nl-east-starters-through-april-mets-fans-avert-your-eyes#comments

He sums up this really ugly graph with:

Wow, that’s a lot of orange below the NL average. The Mets have one starter with a FIP better than the NL average–Dillon Gee. That’s not exactly a recipe for success.

    Yikes!

    1. TRS86

And again the question becomes, we have identified the problem, how do we change it?

  8. metsfan4decades

    On the other hand:

You Know, The Mets’ Offense Isn’t Half Bad

    http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/5/4/2151842/new-york-mets-offense-not-half-bad

    Pitching, Pitching, Pitching

    1. Prismo

Now let’s try that again with RISP

      1. TRS86

Well they are .247 .296 .350 .646 in high leverage situations. The funny thing is that in low leverage situations they are 214 .307 .355 .662.

But when in medium leverage they are .281 .349 .445 .794.

Which most likely shows that we are what we are.

        1. Prismo

Perfect! So they’re great at teasing us.

Won’t get runners on too often, but when they’re on, they’ll usually often get advanced. But once advanced, they’ll rarely score.

  9. kistics

    Ok here’s a thought.

I think this ball park is really messing up the hitters (especially the ones that signed as a FA).

Wright had his troubles in ’09 (and to certainly degree, the ball park has changed him as a hitter)
Bay certainly struggled (and still struggling)
Willie and Hairston are terrible and has shown no power at all
Barajas or Frenchy were also terrible.

The ball park must be in their heads and messing with their psyche and confidence.

    1. kingman 26

Bay was better across the board at home last year.

And Wright had less power at home, but higher BA and OBP.

I don’t agree about the park.

      1. saltygary

Yea I’m tired of using the park as an excuse. Players are smart enough to take advantage of it in their approach. Visitors do just fine…

Speaking of approach how great was Ike’s AB last night. Just kepts fights off pitches and just choked up and pushed the ball up the middle. That’s some serious maturity. Understanding strengths and weakness’s and doing whats best for the situation.

      2. kistics

But if wouldn’t you feel frustrated if you think you just hit a HR and comes up 20 ft short of the wall? I think it’s because of that, the hitters are trying to change their approach at the plate. Which causes some problems in their swing.

I have never played any professional nor organized baseball of some sort. But if I can compare the baseball swing to golf swings, certain approach changes can screw up your swing. You certainly cannot tinker with swings every other day and be consistent.

Jim Bowden was just hired as a ESPN writer. His first post is about Reyes:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/SweetSpot/post/_/id/10176/five-teams-that-could-go-after-jose-reyes

    1. stickguy

pretty good article. This is his take on the idea: “His best years should be the next four. He is a building block to a championship-caliber club. If I were running the Mets, I would sign him long-term and continue to build around David Wright, Ike Davis and Reyes.”

I actually agree that what we are seeing this year is the beginning of his peak, AS, prime time years.

anyway, pretty good article, and if any of the teams (especially the Reds) offer up what he proposes, I say grab it!
