Post Game: 2 out of 3 aint bad

The Mets fell to the Dodgers 4-2 today. Dickey kept the Mets in the game for most of today’s show, but let up a 2 run home run to a vengeful Either in the 7th to put the Dodgers ahead 4-1 at the time. Mets would try to make a comeback late with a Daniel Murphy PH one out single followed by a Jose Reyes triple to pull the Mets within 2. Carlos Beltran would fly out for the second out and David Wright would strike out to end the game along with the Mets 3 game win streak. Next up are the Colorado Rockies…and I believe I speak for all Met fans when I say I hope Tulowitzki comes down with a 3 game stomach virus or something….

I was in the car for the 9th inning, and just pulled into a parking spot as Beltran popped out.

I knew in my heart that Wright was not going to extend (or tie) the game. 100% sure. But, I was good, and listened anyway. 2 meatballs later, another K in the books (top 5/6 in that category).

is he still the golden boy? and if so, who the F cares at this point. If he really still has top talent trade value, ship him out. The fans will get over it, and quicker than you think.

Let’s put Jason Bay on waivers.

      1. stickguy

don’t get me started on that stiff. The true poster child for everything that was wrong with the Omar/Jeffy era of mismanagement. Wrong guy, wrong time, wrong reason, wrong contract.

        1. kingman 26

          100% right.

Bay is SO bad right now; it is revolting how they keep citing his return as a reason for the improved recent record. The improved recent record is due to Reyes, pitching, and playing the DBacks, Nats, and Dodgers.

In addition to his overall garbage stats, Bay has now played 14 games and driven in a run in TWO of them.

I don’t boo, but I would have booed Bay if I was there today.

A fake, phony, fraudulent guy from head to toe.

          1. Prismo

Haha I thought about posting quotes from Baron on here, but then decided against it. However, after this comment of yours I just can’t resist.

“Since returning from the disabled list, Jason Bay has hit .260 with one home run and four RBI with 15 strikeouts in 53 at bats. Having said that, the Mets are 10-3 in games in which Bay has appeared in, and 5-15 without him. He clearly hasn’t produced very much so far, but I think it’s fair to say, given the team’s record with him in the lineup, that he provides better balance for the offense and they have produced more with him there.”

No Baron, it’s not fair to say. Absurdity at its finest.

          2. kingman 26

Prismo, I really don’t argue just for the sake of arguing; I NEVER comment on Metsblog, MMO, or places frequented by dingbats.

Thank you for posting the classic example of the idiotic mediocrity which the world is awash in.

The Mets’ record is better lately due to playing bad teams.

The idea that Bay’s pathetic performance has had anything to do with any wins–outside of his first few games back against the DBacks–is not absurd; it is moronic.

            Thank you.

          3. darknova306

Bay is a washed up clown, Wright isn’t nearly the player he used to be, and this pitching staff is a joke. Not to mention the awful, horrendous, pathetic bench. Ugh.

          4. kistics

And yet two best performing players will be gone … thank god for Ike…

        2. metsfan4decades

          Couldn’t agree more, guys.

    2. kingman 26

There’s no one on this team who should be considered untradeable except for Ike.

Absolutely not one other guy, in the majors or minors.

      1. stickguy

hard to argue with that. And I bet that Sandy already has spread the word that the “open for business” sign is hanging in Queens.

      2. darknova306

        +1000000000

      3. metsfan4decades

Love Ike but I think he’s hitting like a putrid .150 against lefties.

Even he has to pick it up in that department.

    “Dickey keeped the Mets”

    KEEPED??

    :-)

lol…thats what 5 washington apples + whatever else I had on saturday night will buy you lol

LOL! NY State apples are better!!

  3. metsfan4decades

O.K., watching this game today kind of encapsulized (is that even a word), what some of you have been saying for a very long time: this team has no identity whatsoever.

Who didn’t know that Wright was gonna K there?
Who doesn’t know that Harris needs to be gone?
Who wants to see Hu as the right hand bat coming off the bench?
Who is tired of seeing Reyes hit these triples, get on base, only to be left on the damn base?
Who is tired of seeing Bay fail, fail, fail.

This is going to be one long summer after Beltran is gone.

I like Gee, but if one more pitcher goes down, we’re looking at the likes of who out there on that mound?

Don’t know what comes first – the chicken or the egg – but this team needs to put an identity on the map and they need to start looking like they’re clicking, all on the same page at the same time.

  4. metsfan4decades

For anyone who did catch the game on SNY about the only entertainment of the afternoon was Ralph in the booth with Gary and Keith.

-Ralph, who is about 150 years old, trying to educate Keith on the value of sabermetrics.
-Ralph, who practically yelled at Wright for taking a 3-1 pitch on a fastball right down the middle.
-Ralph, who was imploring Wright to move up closer to the plate, especially that back foot, and keep his hips from opening up on the swing.
-Ralph, who has been saying since the beginning of the season that Bay is being paid to get the damn ball in the air, over the fence.
-Ralph, who walked 137 times that one season he hit 50+ HRs.

He’s certainly old school, and I know he played in a different era, where I’m sure the media didn’t come into play nearly as much as today. However, I got the feeling listening to him talk that there was a lot less babysitting going on by the manager back then and a lot more ‘you just do the job or you’re out of here’ type of mentality.

I just want to know what farms we can go to, to get the type of ballplayer Ralph was back in the day.

    1. darknova306

This team has needed an identity for a long time. I think the only way they’re gonna get one is by having Sandy blow up the team and develop a new one basically from scratch. Honestly, this division is getting so talented with its pitching, the Mets are years away from serious contention. Get anything we can for our better players and build a new long-term winner around Ike.

    KB’s twitter comment:

    KBurkhardtSNY Kevin Burkhardt
Listening to Sandy Alderson, it sure doesn’t sound like we’ll be seeing Chris Young anytime soon, or for that matter again as a Met.
    **********************************

That is the new identity of the NY Mets. Lead the league in injuries, year after year.

    1. Prismo

Eh, honestly I 100% expected it from Young. He’s always getting injured – we’re lucky we got a few good starts out of him.

    2. darknova306

With Young it was always a question of ‘when’ not ‘if’. This only really hurts because he’s been the one competent starter on this team. With Mejia down, the pitching depth is… well, you know…

      1. stickguy

I wasn’t expecting 30 starts from him. I figured if he could spread 20 out over the year (pitching like he has been) it would be well worth the money.

was there a report on what is wrong, other than his shoulder is still beat to crap?

and frankly, does not give me a warm fuzzy for Johan.

        1. kistics

I heard there are some swelling in his shoulder.. they don’t know if this is because of the previous injury or a new injury…

          Eek…

        2. njstuckintx

I don’t want to see Johan back this year. It’ll be standard Met operating procedure to rush him back to instill some sort of reason to go to end of the year games and Johan further damages what already was broke. Send Johan to a resort with Beer Cart Girls and tennis courts. Even with that, there runs the risk of tennis elbow. Ok, just send him to a place with Beer Cart Girls. See you in February Johan.

          1. kistics

He might blow out his back…. or some sort of groin injury perhaps?

  6. njstuckintx

I hate to say it, but the only interest I have in this team of late is who might be traded and what potential return it might bring.

My emotions, of late, are all turning to 1 word. Disinterest. :(

  7. njstuckintx

Would Sylow’s head explode if they Mets traded away Wright and moved Murph to 3rd?

    1. kingman 26

And if this happened, would there be any sound?

      Would his outlook change?

And more importantly, would we re-sign Castillo to play 2B, as we are paying him already?

      1. njstuckintx

There would be less “whiffffff” sounds, that’s for sure.

  8. kistics

C’mon people… it’s only May 9th. There are still 120+ games to be played. Since the 7 game losing streak, the Mets are 11-8. And we all saw more life to this team than the previous 2 seasons.

Are they going to win the division or the wild card? Probably not. But the offense is clearly better than what it was last year. Wright and Bay have yet to hit a hot streak. Beltran is finally healthy. We all love Ike. Reyes is great (must he go? :( ). Murph can play decent defense at 2B.

    1. njstuckintx

I do enjoy the optimism, but every bright spot you mention is strictly hitting. The 2 bright spots for said pitching (Beato and Young) are on or going on the DL). The back plan to the back up plan (AKA Misch) is already looking like a strong candidate to be up on the big league level for quite some time.

And yes, Go Big Murph makes me smile, as well as seeing Reyes fly around the bases or Ike launching bombs. But the :( ‘s out number the :) ‘s.

      1. kistics

well.. since the shaky start for the BP, they have been pitching relatively well. Beato’s injury doesn’t seem like it’s a major thing and should be back soon.

Yes the backups to the backups suck. But I think this team has already seen the bottom and is on their way back up.

        1. stickguy

Yeah, after the first couple of weeks to sort things out, the pen has actually been good to very good overall. and hopefully beato just needs the couple weeks off.

    2. kingman 26

Since they finished that streak of losing 9 of 10, they are 10-6.

7-2 against the DBacks, Nats, and Dodgers—three really weak teams.

The other wins are salvaging the last win after losing the first two in series with the Phils, Giants, and Astros.

Sure, they can beat other bad teams. But they really need to win a series or two against a .500+ team before we can seriously consider them as being a .500+ potential team.

There are not enough series with bad teams for them to climb over .500 this way.

Lots of games with the Phils, Braves, Marlins, Yanks, and more remain.

      1. kistics

I’m not saying that this team will be in the post season. So, losing to Phils and Giants are expected. And for the most part, they have competed with these big name teams.

If our SP staff over matched most of the time? Yes. But that’s why this team will not win the WS this season. But I’m clearly seeing offense matching up well against any other NL teams.

        1. kingman 26

Well, we both want the same thing, and we can agree to disagree, but since the opening series in FLA, they have played 5 series against winning teams (2 Phils, Braves, Rockies, Giants)–they have lost every series and are 4–12 in the 16 games.

Sorry, but to me, that explains this team.

          1. TRS86

No need to take out the Florida series it counts too. So that means they would be 1-5 and 6-13. Does that really hurt your point? LOL.

          2. stickguy

the odd thing is, over the last few disappointing years, they actually played better against good times. it was getting abused by the dregs (nats, marlins at times) that killed them!

          3. kistics

But you knew going into the season that the Mets won’t beat these teams. At this point, the Mets object should be to beat the teams that they should beat and be a .500 team.

      2. TRS86

Of course this team is going to play well against teams they are better than and lose to teams they are not. Isn’t that what a 75-85 win team will do most of the time?

        1. stickguy

good teams do that too. It is like the adage of win 2/3 at home and .500 on the road. Play near .500 against top teams, feast on the dregs, and go to the playoffs!

          1. TRS86

            6-13 is far from .500.

          2. stickguy

that would only matter if you thought the Mets were a good team.

still relatively early though. A couple of good series and they can creep back to .500

          3. TRS86

Still not the point, of course they could play better but 7 games under .500 through 19 is FAR from playing .500 against the good teams.

        2. kingman 26

No, it certainly is not what an 85 win team does.

An 85 win team wins more than one of every six series against good teams.

There’s a huge difference between a 75 and an 85 win team. Huge.

          1. TRS86

Of course there is. But this year how could you narrow it down anymore than that? With all the could be’s what if’s and only if’s it would be hard to say. The way the season has started perhaps it’s more like a 70-80 win team but it’s just to early for me to narrow it down. To me it looks like they are playing to that 75 win team in the spectrum. However, is it impossible that they are sitting there at 70-72 and go 15-5 to close the season? Right now I would say yeah that’s most likely impossible but baseball is a funny game. Either way, the team is not headed to anywhere in particular other than mediocre.

          2. kingman 26

            Agreed with all of that.

Hell, that’s why I predicted 75 wins before the season!

            :-)

Sure as hell wish I was wrong.

But, as you have wisely repeated, we need pitching and more pitching.

This division is going to get better and better and be brutal.

    3. kingman 26

And while I agree with most of the optimism on individuals, Bay sucks. He sucks long, hard, and consistently. He is awful, and will continue to be awful.

      Waive him.

And we won 2 games largely due to Turner and Pridie’s hits—this almost certainly won’t continue.

      And Murph has stopped hitting.

      1. kistics

Yeah.. Bay has looked really bad…

He has to pick his game up real fast, or he’ll be the next whipping boy for the Mets…

        1. kingman 26

He’s my whipping boy now that Ollie is gone.

          He’s a mockery of a travesty of a sham.

          1. TRS86

What amazes me is just like last year he hits the ball very well at Citi.

This year (virtually the same amount of AB’s home and away)
            .276 .364 .483 .846 at home
            .200 .259 .200 .459 away

            2010
            .277 .371 .459 .830 at home
            .243 .326 .354 .680 away

Some one supporting changing Citifield’s dimensions explain that one.

          2. kingman 26

Changing the dimensions at Citi is a kooky idea; it will be a great home field advantage one day, and if we keep Reyes, he is perfect for Citi and vice versa.

Bay? He did well his first three games back.

Since then, home and away, he has been anemic, powerless, and totally useless, and I cannot even imagine how many men he has left on base.

He hit well against terrible DBack pitching.

            The last 4 home games? 16 PA, 2 1B, 1 2B, 2 BB.

          3. TRS86

While true, still does not change the overall mystery. For some reason he hits tremendously better at home than on the road.

        2. stickguy

Oh, I think he already is the whipping boy. maybe missing so much time is all that is keeping him out of the limelight.

another few years of O fers, no power, and Wright like Ks, and the remaining fans will notice!

And Knog, he won’t be cut. No team would pick him up for his salary alone, so they are going to try and get some use out of him, and hope he rebounds enough to eventually be traded (along with a big bag of cash!)

          1. TRS86

What they should do is platoon him home and away. Let him sit the bench on the road and his season numbers would be passable.

          2. kingman 26

I know he won’t be waived; just a dream of mine!

  9. IB_Twaddle

Bay sure is frustrating, and utterly predictable to watch. At what level of abysmal does Collins get him out of the cleanup spot??

See what he can do batting second seeing a lot more fastballs with Reyes on base having a good year. It’s not like you’re losing any power in the middle of the lineup.

Anything to get this guy doing SOMETHING!
