Post Game. Mets win! Justin Turner makes his case!

Chris Capuano would get the win today, but Justine Turner would be the one turning heads in Huston.

It didn’t look good for the Mets at all for the first five innings.  First, the Astros would get on the board first with score 2 runs and  Aneury Rodriguez would baffle the Met hitters walking only one until the fifth inning.

And then the Mets woke up and all it took was an error.

Jason Bay led off the fifth inning with a pop up that no one caught, after a Murphy walk, Justin Turner came to bat and hit a double that he would stretch into a triple and score two  runs.  Pridie would single and move to third.  Reyes was on first when the Mets would steal another run via double steal i.e Reyes stealing second and Pridie stealing home.  By the time the inning was over the Mets had a 4-2 lead.

But the Astros wanted the Mets to get more.

So in the bottom of the sixth, Jason Bay stroked a single and advanced to second an errant pick-off throw.  After a Murphy walk, red hot Justine Turner would come to bat and crush a ball to left center for a three run bomb thus making the score 7-2.

The Astros would score two runs off the bull pen because Capuano would only go five innings and K-Rod went 1-2-3 to close out the game.

Side Notes.  All of today’s hits came from the bottom of the order.  Reyes, Wright, and Beltran were hitless.  Capuano looked really good but when he came out of the game, Gary Cohen was convinced that something was wrong with him.  Capuano only gave up 6 hits in his outing and got the win.  If you think being a Mets fan is bleak, look at the Astros.  Holy cow, they are really bad.  They made two errors and look exactly like a last place team.   Justin Turner had a banner day adding 5 RBI’s to the back of next year’s baseball card.

Tomorrow the Mets will start a two-game series with the Marlins with Pelfrey on the hill.

    Took another series. NIce.

We’re not that good but the Astros are worse.

And the more I see him pitch, the more I’m impressed with Capuano.

It was the Turner and Pridie show for the most part today. Good for them but 0-15 for the top 4 in the order? Ouch.

I agree. The Astros are truly horrible.

And Capuano may have been THE pickup of the offseason. The guy is such a pro.

Capuano’s post game interview was almost as impressive as well. Instead of patting himself on the back for his 5 innings, he was lamenting that he couldn’t go deeper to spell the BP. Then he gave kudos to them for picking him up, as well as the rest of the team for the heads up baseball they played.

Just a shame Young could not have stayed healthy in this rotation as well.

I didn’t see this game until the 7th inning as I was out. Just watching highlight clips. That was Turner’s first major league HR? Well congratulations, Justin!

That was one guy you were very down on though. Feels good to eat crow occasionally huh?

Absolutely, and as often as necessary.

Yes, I am volatile as you say, and yes I think I am pretty smart. But I NEVER back down from learning and happily admitting when I am wrong in a case like this.

Capuano appears to me to be a seriously crafty pitcher, a very serious professional, and to be healthy again and better than I thought he would be by far.

I guess my main hope is that his arm is preserved enough so that he can keep this up and stay around for a few years.

          1. TRS86

He does seem to be very intelligent. I think Young was as well, he just broke down. As for Cap being able to stay around a few years, I just hope he makes it until the deadline. LOL. Honestly as well as he has pitched I hope somehow he is not one of the SP candidates next year. That would mean that Johan is back, Pelfrey is found, Niese has had a good year and Dickey has found the knuckle again.
That being said if Cap keeps this up hopefully he can get that multiyear deal that he will deserve.

Young was amazing. Amazing mentally and as a pitcher.

If he had a stronger physical makeup, he could have been a perennial all-star.

At this point, I am seriously thinking–as someone who hugely respects odds and probablity–that Cap will remain healthy and productive.

And maybe be our number one before long, if he is not already.

Let’s not talk about “THE pickup of the offseason” until the season is more than a month and a half old. Plenty of time for Capuano to prove himself in either direction. If Young had stayed healthy and continued to put up the numbers he had, he’d be THE pickup of the offseason. We’ll see how it all shakes out.

    Help a coming (next year?)
    Familia and Harvey today:
    12 shutout innings, 10 k’s, 7 hits.

    Familia 7 innings 6 k’s 3 hits. Looking great.
Harvey rebounding from bad outing 5 innings 4 k’s 4 hits.

Well I’m a half glass full kind of guy, a take it one game at a time kind of guy. Looking back since the Mets 5-13 start, the Mets are 14-8. Same record as the Phillies over that stretch who were 14-8. The only team in our division with a better record over that stretch were the Braves at 15-7. During that stretch we’ve lost Young, Beato, Parnell, Davis, Bay for 2 games, found out Wright has been playing with a bad neck, Angel has been set back, and lost Mejia in the minors. Now I know the stretch will be getting tougher, especially in June, but kudo’s to our club who while appearing battered and fragile has cobbled together 3 series wins in a row and is trying their best to the tune of the the same record as the Phils over the past 22 since their horrendeous start. Now, hopefully they can keep it going, climb their way back to .500 and keep building on getting better one game at a time.

    1. TRS86

Agreed. Not to mention that up until the Astros series we had the toughest schedule in the division. Not sure where that puts us now.

    2. kingman 26

The schedule gets a bit tougher starting tomorrow….seven in seven days with FLA, WASH, and the Skanks.

Let’s go 4-3 at least and really start a path to .500 and better.

      1. TRS86

Yeah two game series are tough and just plain odd.

        1. kingman 26

Especially when it is Josh J and Nolasco!

But, tons of rain around the NY area; could be a 1 game series.

      2. hazmet

No doubt about it, the stretch gets tough but they’ve been playing very watchable competitive games imo. The only teams I felt absolutely owned them so far have been the Giants and Phils. They got some measure of revenge against the Rockies this road trip to save a little face and the last series against the Phils 2 of the contests were well pitched and well played. Taking it a game at a time, let’s see how many licks it takes to get Pelf to the bottom of a win tomorrow and claw to within a game of .500.

Not to darken the mood, but I also like that our tradeable pieces have done nothing but improve their value so if they gotta be flipped then a good return may be had. Also, Capt. Kirk inching closer…

Let’s not forget the inane bunt Turner was trying to lay down before the 2 strike count and his then swinging away.

I DO think Collins is a good motivator, but at this point, I am ready to start a petition to just frigin outlaw bunting.

I never need to see another bunt.

    1. hazmet

Yeah, that was nuts. I know they speculated bunt’m over and then maybe a walk the eight place hitter and pinch hit for Cap with the bases loaded but just didn’t like the bunt play there, or, in many places so far this year.

I feel like Michael Corelone in Godfather 3.

Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in.
