Breaking – Wright Suffers Stress Fracture: Surgery Unlikely, DL Possible

Personal thoughts: The Mets are also seeking a second opinion, but it sounds to me like a 15-day trip to the DL is likely for Wright. With the mediocre way he’s played so far this season, I don’t think this is the worst thing in the world. Hopefully he can come back hot.

Sandy Alderson media address (all quotes below thanks to Adam Rubin):

“David Wright examined at Hospital for Special Surgery to look at back. Stress fracture in lower back.”
“Diving play at third base involving Houston’s Carlos Lee in NY is culprit, Alderson says.”
“Alderson said non-surgical. It would be rest for 10 days for stress fracture, then return to baseball activity.”
“”We’re not talking about something long term,” Alderson said.”

David Wright was taken out of the lineup today in the first of a two-game series with the Marlins. Wright has struggled thus far this season, putting up an OPS of only .741. Rumors have circled Mets-nation regarding a possible back and/or neck injury David’s been playing through.

Updating as the conference goes on…

How can this be possible after all the injuries the Mets have had past 2 seasons???? HOW?????

    WTF!

    1. kistics

I don’t know where you can find this stuff, but the Mets would clearly lead the entire professional sports in the world in time-off from injuries.

      Are we cursed?

      1. gategem

It’s the curse of the Wilpon’s. Sherlock Holmes is on the case. LOL

  3. Mr North Jersey

Sorry Prismo I didn’t realize someone was going to be on top of the news and publish a post on this when i published my post. I deleted mine already and will just add on to this post as update demand. :-)

    1. Prismo

Haha, thanks NJ! I have this week off before I move to NY for my internship. So I’ll probably be on top the news/Mets/stuff more than usual for the next few days. :)

      1. Mr North Jersey

Awesome and Congrats on the internship.

      2. stickguy

Hey Pris, 2nd saturday in August, shoot up the Northway to participate in RDM day at Saratoga racetrack! So far it is me and Knog, and MF is mulling it over.

You would stick out as the kid of the bunch.

        1. Prismo

Can’t we get TKFJ to come so I don’t feel so young!?

          1. tkfj2

Not happening. My internet persona allows me to be mysterious.

          2. stickguy

I was just thinking of the locals.

In real life, TK is probably 5’2″, 105#s soaking wet, and a total wallflower that doesn’t make a peep in public! So he just doesn’t want to blow his cover.

You can talk to my son. He is in college, so he will understand your young hip lingo.

          3. Prismo

Hey, don’t some of you oldies have youngins of your own? You can each bring me a cute girl who I could potentially date. May be best parent win!

          4. stickguy

well, I do have a cute young blond that will be with me. But she is only 15 so if you look at her funny I will have to toss you onto the track for the horses to run over.

don’t worry about the age thing. My BILs (40 and 50) both act like they are about 22 most of the time.

          5. Prismo

15′s a little young for me…don’t worry, she’s safe from my wrath. :p

          6. Prismo

I could always bring my sister though, who’s 16!

          7. stickguy

            You’re dating your sister?

You Okies are a strange bunch I see.

          8. Prismo

            Uhhhhhhhh.UHHHHHH.

Could bring her so your daughter could make a friend!

          9. kingman 26

            HAHA! Nice thread!

Well, I am 44, but I look a bit younger, feel like I am in my early 30s as I live so much healthier than I did back then, and act like, well, younger than my age. I am between lady Kingmans right now, but generally date women a good bit younger than me. But a lot older than Stick’s daughter.

As the saying goes, you are only young once, but you can be immature forever.

I REALLY hope many of you make it up here that 2nd Saturday in August.

I promise it will be a blast.

          10. stickguy

well, that certainly sounds a little less weird, but only marginally. Unless it is just mine, aren’t teenage girls adament about not making new “friends” like this?

          11. tkfj2

You are not far off stick, you are good. It is more like 5′ 8″ 140 soaking wet, and a total wallflower when not with my good friends.

Only then and on the internet I transform into a new person.

          12. kingman 26

Wow, that’s interesting and not what I would have guessed!

          13. darknova306

If I wind up moving out to Lee, MA next month, I could make that drive and help you out, Prismo. :)

          14. Prismo

Oh, excellent!! That would even up the numbers. What’s the job, BTW? I assume it’s at a brewery.

          15. darknova306

Interviewing at a distillery in that area next week. Interviewing at a brewery near Cooperstown later this week. Should be interesting to see where this all goes.

Where in NY is your internship? NYC or somewhere else?

          16. Prismo

It’s in East Greenbush, but I’ll be living with my family in Delmar.

          17. kingman 26

            Ommegang Brewery?

They seriously make about THE best ale.

          18. Prismo

Good luck with your interviews…I hope you find your dream job.

          19. darknova306

Agreed on Ommegang, love their stuff. The place I’m interviewing at is Butternuts, about half an hour west of Cooperstown. Makers of Pork Slap.

Prismo, we’ll have to have some drinks at Mahar’s sometime. As long as I’m within 4 hours of Albany, I come out there to visit people frequently.

  4. tkfj2

    The curse continues.

Pagan, Ike and Wright all out. Down to the nitty gritty of the bench now.

    1. Prismo

Not to mention Young, Santana, Beato, sort of Parnell (but he just stinks)

      1. tkfj2

        Yep.

I’d think David’s mediocre play has to do a lot with this issue. Need a good back for swing mechanics, etc.

        1. stickguy

just might explain why his butt has been flying out. When your back is bad, you do all kinds of bad things to compensate for it.

Certainly can’t say he isn’t tough if he played with this for the last month!

          1. metsfan4decades

            This.
Take it from someone who has an unstable spine. I’m compensating constantly trying to avoid feeling pain.

    2. kistics

What do we even call this curse? The curse of Willie?

      1. Prismo

Soon to be “The Curse of Willie…Harris” as he could take over 3B. FML

        1. kistics

          The Curse of shitty field?

          1. stickguy

            I blame Jerry.

          2. kingman 26

            HAHA!!

            LOL!

Oh man, that’s your BEST use of that phrase.

  5. stickguy

It will be interesting to see how they handle this roster and lineup wise.

Who gets called up (has to be an IF this time), who plays 3rd, and which scrob hits where in the batting order?

Too bad that 3B prospect (lutz?) got hurt again when he was playing well. Wonder who gets the nod instead?

Hey, call up Flores, and do some OTJ training!

Now though, Beltran has to hit 3rd.

typical Mets though. Why couldn’t the guy with the broken back get hurt in that collision (getting him a head start on his rest period) instead of the guy carrying the offensive load?

but man, if this means we see harris every day, it will suck 10x worse.

    1. Bryan

It’s a big shame Lutz is hurt, because it would be a great opportunity for him. He hasn’t played since April 21 with a hamstring strain. Nick Evans has seen a lot of time at 3B since then. He could get the call up and play there but he’s not on the 40-man roster and would have to go through waivers to be sent back down again.

Veteran Luis Figueroa played 3B at Buffalo today, but the past week it’s been newly promoted Michael Fisher and Jerry Manuel favorite Jon Malo, neither are likely to be given much consideration. At AA, Eric Campbell is a corner infielder and was invited to the STEP camp, but is hitting .217 with 5 extra-base hits. Josh Satin would be an interesting guy to consider to either play 3B or play 2B, his natural position, and move Turner to 3B. Satin is hitting .309 with 3 HR and 10 doubles, but a strikeout per game average.

I would go with Evans, although you have to think Terry will play Harris at 3B as well. If Ike can come back as soon as he’s eligible, Murph can move to 3B no problem, keeping Turner at 2B, which I don’t think would be too bad, but they have to find a way to survive until Ike gets back.

      1. Prismo

        Thanks Bryan! Great analysis.

      2. Bryan

I didn’t realize Ike has 10 more days on the DL. Unless Duda’s back gets magically healthy (he’s now on the DL), Murphy is stuck at 1B, so they might just move Turner to 3B and bring up Tejada to play 2B, if they’re comfortable with Turner at 3B over Harris or someone from the minors.

  6. stickguy

at least Wright was smart enough to go on the shelf when he was dragging the team down. So if he was going to hit like he has been for the next couple weeks anyway, losing him won’t hurt much!

  7. darknova306

This just keeps getting uglier. At least it’s a potential reason for his struggles this year.

Sweet lord, the thought of Willie Harris as the starting 3B…

  8. kingman 26

Well, seriously, Wright remains the man of this franchise.

Seriously—he’s been playing with a partially broken frigin back??

Bay and Beltran would have retired; Wright keeps playing.

    1. darknova306

Wright keeps playing and STILL manages to hit a huge homerun against the Astros with the broken back. Impressive, most impressive.

      1. kingman 26

        Could not agree more.

And damn I hope this shuts up the people bitching about his performance this year.

Really just incredible; he WANTS to play.

Never wanted to trade him; now they simply cannot. He deserves to stand there with the WS trophy. Even if it takes a frigin decade.

        1. darknova306

I’ll admit I’ve been pretty down on him given his performance this year, but this changes the perspective completely. Listening to him talk at the press conference, sounded like he fought really hard to play through it but it got to be too much for his stubbornness to handle. I just wish, for his sake and the team’s sake, that he had gotten it checked out earlier, but there’s no way I’m gonna fault him for it.

  9. metsfan4decades

    Ugh…..

These guys on DNL kill me. They start off with ‘I’m not a doctor, but’.
They should stop right there. They have no clue what they’re talking about.

I guess they don’t understand that certain problems show up on an xray and certain ones only on a MRI. If this is the first MRI Wright had, then I can understand how this likely was not diagnosed until just now.

    But again……UGH…..

  10. njstuckintx

Do you think that weight of the franchise was proverbial last straw that broke the Camel’s back? Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Seriously, though. Stress fracture in his back. Back injuries ruin people. I can see a rush job on the franchise face and it’s going to total him.

And on the last note, at least the ‘trade wright’ thoughts are shot to hell.
