It was Mike Pelfrey who took to the hill tonight to try to not only draw the Mets even in the series against the Phillies but also stop a 2 game losing streak. Cole Hamels would attempt to stifle the potent Mets line-up. It would be a real pitchers duel until the eighth inning.
The Mets would stake Pelfrey to a one run lead when Reyes, who continues to stay hot, hit a double, advanced on a steal to third and was pushed home by Rusty’s brother Justine Turner.
Jose Reyes just ran all over the Phillies tonight, after a his second base hit and steal, would score again on a Jason Bay single. By the time the third inning was over, the Mets had five stolen bases against Hamels.
The Phillies would get to Pelfrey in the fourth and score a run when, after a Chase Utley cheap double, Ibanez pushed him home with a real double. Pelfrey would work hard and get his pitch count up into the 70′s, but make it out with the lead. Big Pelf would pitch into the eighth inning and leave with a man on and a slim 2-1 lead. His final line, 7 2/3 innings giving up just 4 hits. But the Phillies would jump all over the bullpen and take the lead throwing Pelf’s effort away.
The Mets would go through 3 pitchers in the top of the eighth inning and would give it all back and more. After Pelfrey got two outs, he was lifted after giving up a single to Rollins. Pelfrey would be lifted for Mike O’Connor who would and let up a base hit to Chase Utley that would tie the game at 2. Chase Utley would steal second and advance to third on an errant throw. Izzy came in and walked Polanco. He was lifted for Byrdak who coughed up the lead permanently when Howard hit a 3 RBI double and put the Phillies up 4-2.
The Mets were done at this point, they went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth and didn’t even pose a threat in the ninth.
Side Notes: It’s getting a little scary when, in the first inning, Chase Utley drew a walk and the crowd cheered. Just how many Phillie fans are coming to Citi Field? I’ll say this, A LOT! Enough to make Fred keep this team a little longer than I would like. I love Justine Turner. I know that he’s going to cool down but I think the Mets have to keep up in Queens for the season.
This team has really went down hill since Fred Wilpon’s comments were published. It has really made me root for Picard’s lawsuit against him. Fred said his team was sh***y and it’s exactly what he got this week. Funny thing is, they really were playing well even dropping two to the Yankees.

This team has absolutely no confidence and they’re playing like they have no confidence. I’ll go one step further and say this doesn’t even look like a ‘team’. It looks like 25 guys who just happen to be playing together.
It’s not like the Phils who are collectively trying to return to post season. It’s:
- a couple of guys on one year contracts who may or may not be back.
- a couple of guys on the last year of their contract who probably will not be back.
- a couple of guys returning from injuries trying find it yet.
- a couple of guys on the DL trying to get healthy enough to return.
- a couple of guys back and forth on the Buffalo shuttle.
- a couple of rookies trying to prove they belong up here.
- a couple of vets who have already proven they don’t belong on any ML team.
Throw in the owner publicly saying this is a ‘shitty’ team and what do you have? Well, a ‘shitty’ team.
The best thing I can say about tonight is Reyes didn’t get hurt when tripping over Turner trying to catch that pop up near the tarp.
Kudos to Pelf for a strong start, for all the good it did him.

this is just getting frustrating at this point. and if I happen to check and see them in the lead in the 7th, I know to turn it off since nothing good will come out of it!
at least Pelf has rebounded from the bad start. Hope this keeps up.
and what a fine time for the pen, strong all year, to melt down.

Once again we see Terry adhering to the golden rule that a crappy left-handed pitcher versus a left-handed batter is far superior to allowing a superior right handed pitcher to face that batter. Off the field they may be light years apart but on the field Terry and Jerry are identical twins.

all too true, unfortunately.

Yup. There is a reason he is now known as Jerry Collins.
If anything, TC might be worse in this regard.

The Mets didn’t lose due to Wilpon’s comments, they lost to the best team in MLB because Wilpon had the correct assessment. You can’t expect to win with Nick Evans and Tejada in the lineup at the corners.

Did anyone else see Einhorn’s deal? This is the biggest sign of the Wilpons desperation to hold onto the team that I’ve seen:

can’t blame them. It makes sense. Hell, if you owned the team, wouldn’t you want to hold onto it?
In concept, it makes perfect sense. They are looking at right now as a perfect storm of cash flow problems, and hope that in a few years they will be resolved and they (and the team) will be on a sound footing. If not, then they will sell out.
probably better for them then the other alternative, which was a real low ball offer for more of the team, or sell the whole thing outright. This buys them enough time to let the situation play out.
In some ways, this was like getting refinanced by a bank (which they could not do for real).

also, this guy seems to know how to make money. So I am getting a feeling that if he does buy out 100% (to probably turn right around and sell part of it back off), they will be run to make a profit, not as a toy for him to pour $50mill/year of his own money into!

sweet deal for einhorn. he either gains control of the team (for an additional price) or gets his principal back and continues to enjoy (theoretical) profits.
