May ended on a sour note for most affiliates, so let’s bring on June:
Charlotte 8, Buffalo 4
Chris Schwinden had a rough outing, giving up 5 runs in 4.2. Walking 5 guys didn’t exactly help his cause. The Bisons managed to score 3 runs in the 9th, but it was too little too late. Fernando Martinez led off the inning with a solo homerun, his 4th of the year.
Erie 3, Binghamton 1 (game 1)
Robert Carson had a decent outing, but didn’t get much help. He lasted 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits, but only struck out 2. Josh Satin launched a solo homer, his 6th of the year. The B-Mets managed just 1 other hit, a single by Jon Malo. Reese Havens was 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout.
Binghamton 3, Erie 2 (game 2, 8 innings)
Colin McHugh admitted that he didn’t deserve a promotion to Binghamton, but he also said he would make the most of it and he did. McHugh lasted 6 innings, giving up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, striking out 5. Erik Turgeon pitched 2 shutout innings and got the win. Jon Malo, Sal Manriquez, and Raul Reyes all had 2 hits each. The B-Mets had 7 singles, which was enough to push 3 runs across and get the win.
Clearwater 4, St. Lucie 1
Jack Egbert, who I believe spent last year on the Mets 40-man roster, (not that anyone noticed) took the loss after giving up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits. John Church gave up 2 more runs, but it was the Mets bats that didn’t do enough. Pedro Zapata had 2 hits to bump his average to .343. The 2-5 part of the order combined for 1 hit, as Matt Den Dekker and Wilmer Flores both went hitless. The lone bright spot was a solo homerun by Cesar Puello to lead off the game. It was his 3rd of the year and 2nd in 3 games.
Savannah 1, Charleston 0
Another outstanding effort from Greg Peavey: going 6 innings, giving up 3 hits and a walk while striking out 7. Gabriel Zavala and Josh Edgin finished the job in the bullpen. Savannah’s 9 hits only produced 1 run, but that was all they needed. Robbie Shields had 3 of those hits, including a double. Cory Vaughn had 1 hit and drove in the only run scored by Shields. Albert Cordero had 2 hits including a double.
DSL Phillies 10, DSL Mets1 7
The Dominican Mets scored 7 runs and committed 7 errors, leading to 6 unearned runs. Third baseman Yeixon Ruix and right fielder Joan Decena had 2 hits each. Left fielder Jose Figuera had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s.
DSL Rays 6, DSL Mets2 4
Andres Perez pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Shortstop Jorge Rivero had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Elvis Sanchez walked twice and struck out twice. Jean Rodriguez had 2 hits and scored 2 runs as the designated hitter batting in the 9 spot. Both teams committed 3 errors.

I hope Kirk gets back soon. he could be up by the end of the year.
and good to see Havens actually playing pretty much every day now. Really crossing my fingers that he is past his side muscle problems after the rib procedure.
And that peavey kid is really looking interesting. He was a slcoer in college, wasn’t he?

Regarding Kirk, do you mean as a Sep call up? Or to replace one or more who might be traded?
Is Kirk just a CF or can he play the corner OF as well?

I think that IF it was Kirk and Pagan you would see Pagan sliding over to RF. That being said I see no reason that a CF can’t play a corner if needed.

defensively, Kirk should be able to handle any of the 3 outfield spots.

he seems to be a very good CF. I think the only question was if he would have enough range to stay there.

His range in CF is a bit of a question, but I think he makes up for it with his effort. He’s on the DL because he stretched out on a diving catch, and I’ve seen him do something similar on television a couple times before; he’s a guy that leaves it all out there.

either case with him. Certainly should be up by September, and if (when?) Beltran gets traded, someone needs to slide into the open OF spot.

I would assume that Duda and Fmart are ahead of him on THIS year’s depth chart.

Why does Kirk need to be called up this season? He’s struck out 50 times in 200 AAA at bats and there’s no need to accelerate his service time with two promising players in front of him.
And as discussed yesterday, F-Mart has to be the guy called up for regular playing time because he’s out of options after this season. It’s time to see what he can do with extended PT.

I figured a september call up. He has to get added to the 40 man after this year anyway, and my understanding was that a sept. call up did not change his service time (start the clock/), but always possible I am wrong.
coming up in July to play FT would be based on the team deciding he was the clear favorite to be the LT solution out there. If there is any question, then you are correct that they should go with the guys that are already on the clock, most likely F Mart.
highly unlikely (well, maybe not highly), but depending on who does what, and how much money they are looking to cut, RF and CF could both be open (meaning pagan is nto retained). also the chance they actually trade Bay (again slim to none, and slim died).

Based on discussions yesterday they do count as service time and it’s not about years but time. Thus once he is started he is started.

Josh Satin must be a real butcher in the field. He gets very little pub but has been a very good hitter his whole MiL career (.300 .393 .462). Of course, he’s old enough to have fathered some of his teammates.
A couple of fringe prospects have who have really hurt their stock this season are Eric Neisen and Roy Merritt. Brad Holt has not helped himself with a 1:1 BB:K ratio. A couple of years ago the debate was weather he was a future closer or #2 starter. Now there’s question whether he will even be able to succeed at AAA if he even earns a promotion there.

I don’t think Satin is a butcher, but I do wonder why at his age they have not moved him to AAA, especially when they needed guys and signed minor league veterans instead. He’s played a little 1B and 3B, and I wonder if the outfield might be added as well b/c if he ever gets to the majors it will be as a utility guy. I would have moved him to Buffalo ahead of Fisher.
Merritt isn’t going anywhere, he had a crack at AAA last year and got killed. Niesen is pretty iffy too, but I wouldn’t give up on him just yet. I don’t think Holt is anywhere close to a top prospect anymore. With his past there’s a chance he can recapture his old form, but it doesn’t look good at this point.
