I hope Jason Bay retired.

Hey, then the Mets wouldn’t have to pay his salary anymore! Not that they’d spend it or anything.

With our luck they probably struck a Bobby Bonilla type deal and we’d be paying him until the year 2100.

well, the classic Met situation would be they finally got fed up enough to release him, then a team like the Yankees picks him up, immediately makes a miracle cure to his fouled up mechanics, and he has a huge 2nd half leading them to the playoffs.
Still, knowing he won’t ever do that as a met, it would be worth taking the risk to get rid of him!

I got my wish, he’s batting 10th.

I prefer to think of him as batting 25th!

Jeezus, Frankie.
Nice series win there against the Braves.

yeah, like we discussed in the dugout, it really looks like something is wrong with him. His FB is really off.

Could be a little dead arm period or perhaps something to do with the pain from his mouth. He was pitching pretty damn good until the dentist removed two teeth. I wonder if he can put them back in?

Well, in the post game last night, TC said he’s not suffering any ill effects from the dental surgery. He did speculate Frankie might be in a ‘dead arm’ period some pitchers go through.
However, after that when reporters brought that up to Frankie he vehemently denied that. He also said the problem is not his velocity (couldn’t prove it by me). He stated the problem is location. He went on to say he’ll look at films, see what he’s doing wrong b/c he can’t keep getting behind hitters the way he has been and be successful.
All I kept thinking about when he was talking there was Duaner. He said the same type things when he came back the second time after that injury. He just kept saying he didn’t know what was wrong but he ‘felt fine’. In his case, he probably didn’t have any pain but his shoulder/arm were just never going to be the same after that injury.
In KRod’s case, if his arm/shoulder is fine then I have to go with mechanics. And if you look at him, his delivery is almost more violent than it was in his past. Someone mentioned the problem with his ankle (ankles?) going back to his last year with the Angels and he altered his mechanics to compensate.

Dead arm the first week of June?
I am not buying that.

BTW, anyone watching the game on ESPN here Bobby V going off on a rant with this franchise even remotely thinking about not resigning both Reyes, with a mention or two about Wright as well? He held very little back. Here’s some of it I saw quoted around on other blogs:
“I’m finding it difficult to understand what the thinking is with the Mets these days. Are they not seeing what a special player this kid Jose Reyes is? I don’t get it… It’s obvious the fans see what’s going on and are completely frustrated by it. They’re having demonstrations, they’re having parades, the park is filled with signs and special t-shirts, and you can hear all the constant chants.”
“Look at Reyes’ average annual numbers compared to Crawford – they’re practically the same. But Jose Reyes is two years younger than Crawford and he plays a more demanding position. How many shortstops can do what Reyes can do? I’ll tell you how many – none. He’s only now reaching his prime.”
“They’re circulating all this stuff about Reyes’ OBP not being good, and David Wright not being being able to drive the ball, and they’re making it sound like neither player is worth what it would take to sign them. Signing and keeping both of those players is the absolute least the Mets should do for their fans. It’s the least any New York market team should do.”
“What is their new strategy – does anyone understand this new strategy? Do they think their gonna get away with just signing a bunch of a million-dollars-a-year players? How are you going to do something like that in a New York market? Even mid and low market teams have two or three $15 million dollar a year players on their teams.”
“I’m not buying whatever they are trying to sell to their fans. There is no excuse for the Mets not to sign and keep both of them. This notion that they can only keep one is absolutely ridiculous. This is a New York team – it’s the biggest market in baseball. I find it hard to believe they can’t afford to keep David Wright and most of all Jose Reyes who is a more dynamic player. Keep them both!”
“They’re paying Jason Bay $16 million dollars a year and he’s sitting on the bench tonight, and yet they’re reluctant to lock up the most exciting player in the league, who is only 27 years old, for a few million dollars more? Somebody’s gonna have to explain that to me.”

Loved that last line: ‘Somebody’s gonna have to explain that to me’.
Couldn’t agree more. Wish someone would explain it to me as well.
I’ve been saying since ST ended and there were no extensions talks with Reyes that I don’t care how this FO spins it, trading Reyes or letting him walk isn’t going to fly with the majority of fans.
And trading Wright this season? Just as ridiculous.

There zero chance they are trading Wright. Zero.
Why would they?
It’s meaningless media drivel.

he is also under contract/team control thru 2013. Not sure why people keep talking about the 2 like it is sign one or the other. Totally different circumstances, and no reason to even think about a Wright extension for at lest 2 years (after the 2012 season).

Plus you’ll have Bay’s contract over in 2013 (knowing they won’t let that option vest), so there is your extra cash there for retaining Wright. I’m not sure why Wright is even discussed at all. I guess it’s the whole “blow up the core, restock the shelves” mentality. Not a fan of that mentality.

Looking at things objectively (or being brutal, like a GM has to), I am not doing anything with Wright until I find out who he is.
the last couple of years, he has looked like (overall) much less of a player than he used to be. So I want to see him with the back healed, proving he can still be a force. The rest of this year and next to basically prove he is worth an extension.
look, after 2013, he will be 31 at least. And I am not sure he is a guy that I want to commit a huge deal to at age 32 (jason Bay ring a bell?)
reyes is different, being only 28, so you would be paying for his prime time years. Wright, you would be paying for the decline. So it is possible that Wright after 2013 will be a guy to say good bye to.

Always liked Bobby V.
And the stuff about Crawford I have been saying for years.
They are the same offensive player, but Jose is younger and plays SS.
He’s going to get Crawford money if he plays the entire year healthy, simple as that.
Sandy should be fired for malpractice if he does not reach out to Jose’s agents SOON.

Agreed. Someone is going to pay. There is no reason you don’t start the extension talks early.
This stinks from the Wilpons only. One would think if Alderson had a blank checkbook, Reyes would be addressed about Alderson’s 3rd day on the job.

6/6/2011-9:08am at 9:08 am (UTC -4)
I agree with Tex. Sandy can only do what the guy holding the checkbook will allow him to (hey, just like being married!)
I know MF and I have beaten this to death, but the time to work out something fair to both sides was early last off season. Once you let it play out into the season here, you were taking a big risk that he was going to have a normally healthy year (no surprise, since his only issue last year was an illness, and a minor muscle pull). Not like we were looking at Beltran’s knees on him!
so, he is healthy, and showing his talent as he hits his prime years. And it is going to be pricey to retain him. or get anyone else in the same situation (the nature of going after top FAs).
Who knows. once Crawford got that deal, they might have known they were screwed (and saw the end game being reyes gone) and everything since has just been setting up to make it happen?
if so, it is probably good that he is having a monster year, since it ups his trade value! Just bad if they still thought they were going to keep him.

I honestly think Reyes likes it here. I really do. I think he is comfortable, likes playing with guys he knows, likes the NY area, has a home and his family here, and would sign if offered a fair deal.
The way he is hitting this year is different than 2006–2008.
His swing is beautiful; line drives all over the field. No pop ups, no swinging for the fences. He is hitting .395 with 10 triples in 29 home games. Citi Field is ideal for him and he knows this too.
Alderson should stake his job on it; tell Fred what he wants to offer Jose and insist on it.
Yes, I was a critic of Jose’s the last two years, but those who know me long enough know I have been a huge fan of his since before he even made the majors.
Yeah, I want to see him dancing next to Wright AFTER they clinch another postseason berth, and while wearing damn frigin MET uniforms.
Jose has not only proven he is a fast as ever, his hitting has been better than it has ever been his entire pro career, and it is more than just a few weeks now. He looks like he has never looked swinging the bat.
And he will stay a Met.
stickguy
6/6/2011-9:51am at 9:51 am (UTC -4)
I agree with what you think. He does want to stay, and that was a big reason a fair deal could have been done early.
And if anything, the rally to keep him is making him feel better about the place.
and the improvement? He is 27, has a lot of ML time under his belt, and is not hurting. Exactly when you would expect him to have his monster years.
don’t forget, in 2009 (before the tendon issue), he was also off to a monster start, in many ways reminiscent of what he is doing now. And even last season, once he got back into a groove, he hit for a lot of power (at about a 20 HR/season pace). So this is not a fluke IMO.
and over the next 3-4 years, I honestly think they could more easily replace Wright than Reyes (purely from a production on the field standpoint) if you had to make a choice.

Yeah, I really believed that if Jose was healthy, we would see the same Jose we saw pre-2009. So far this year, we’re actually seeing a bit better Jose.
Citi is hosting the All Star game in 2013, right? How sad will it be if we see Jose as the All Star starting SS in another uniform?
Speaking of which, can someone please tell me why Jose is currently 3rd on the NL AS voting, with Rollins 1st? Rollins? Ugh. We fans shouldn’t be allowed to vote…….

phils are a flavor of the month, they have big attendance (and heavily encourage fans to stuff the box), etc.
hopefully that changes before the vote is final, but tulo probably wins anyway.
in any case, Reyes is going to be on the team. If Chaaaallllleeee takes rollins over jose as a sub, he should be suspended.

Isn’t it Bochy (Giants) managing the NL side of the ASG this year?
