Last Night on the Farm – 6/12/11

The minor league affiliates split the day.  Let’s take a look!

Columbus 10, Buffalo 4

Josh Stinson and Taylor Tankersley both got shelled in two innings of work, respectively.  Brian Sweeney had five shutout innings, but it was all over but the crying by then.  Zach Lutz was 1 for 4 and Fernando Martinez was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Binghamton 7, Trenton 6 (12 innings)

This was a wild one, folks.  Jeurys Familia started and was absolutely cruising through six innings.  In the seventh, however, he ran into trouble, as he and Randy Brooks combined for to give up 4 runs in the frame and allow the Thunder to jump in front.  Familia did finish the day with 11 K’s in 6.2 innings.  Saloman Manriquez clubbed a 2 run homer in the 9th to tie the game, and Allan Dykstra had a 2 run double in the 12th to seal the win.  Reese Havens was 1 for 5 with a run, and Josh Satin was 1 for 4 with a rib.  Erik Turgeon got the win and Brandon Sage hung on for the save.

Jupiter 8, St. Lucie 2

The PSL Mets scratched back to tie this one at 2 a piece, then the 9th inning happened.  Then poor Jeffrey Kaplan took the hill.   Six, batters and six runs later, the game was all but over.  Chin up Jeffrey.  On the plus side, Matt den Dekker was 1 for 3 with a run, and Juan Ligares was the same but with an RBI.

Savannah 5, Rome 1

The Sand Gnats are closing in on the first half title, which will earn them a spot in the post-season come September.  A big 4-run 8th tipped the scales in this one.,  Chase Huschingson got the win in relief, going 4 scoreless innings giving up 1 hot and 2 BB while striking out 2.  His ERAS has dropped to 1.97 for the season.

almost time for some promotions. Should be interesting to see who ends up where when the music stops.

I’m more excited to see St. Lucie and Savannah chase after division titles.

Den Dekker is definitely a guy who should be moved up. Time for him to play against similarly experienced players.

Due to the lack of a Rusty post, i’m putting this here.

At MMO (avoid the comments section) there was a post about re-signing Beltran at 8 per for 2 years.

    Here’s the link: http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/06/is-keeping-carlos-beltran-such-a-bad-idea.html

I guess this brings up the questions:
    1. would the Mets sign him based on financial restrictions?
    2. will he accept 8 per for 2 years or want 3-4 years?
    3. why would he stay in the NL, when DH is suited for him to play every days (4 days in the field, 3 as DH).
    4. would the mets (if they had the flexibility) through money his way when they know the bigger issue is at SS?

      1) If cheap enough, maybe, but probably only for 1 year guaranteed (and only as a hedge against none of the rookies being ready).
      2) 2 years, I think he will have to. probably gonna be done with option years. Money? only if he can’t get more!
      3) Probably will take the best deal, regardless of league.
      4) I don’t think they would show him the money if it meant giving up something else needed (such as reyes).

Overall, no way do I expect him back.

I wouldn’t be in favor of bringing back Beltran. My reasons being that I don’t think he would accept a deal at the amount of money you’re talking about. I also don’t see the Mets being serious contenders in the next year or two, so why not try to get a couple of future pieces for him now.

Beltran is one of my favorite current day Mets but I’m not in favor of resigning him. This would be going down the same mistake road Omar did with aging stars. Alou and Uncle Cliff come to mind. Maybe El Duque as well.

We need to move away from older type players we KNOW have chronic injury problems. He might be very good next year or even the year after but there’s just as much chance he’ll break down early and we’ll get nothing in return.

I’m in agreement that he belongs in the AL where he can DL much of the time and play the field some of the time.

Definitely agree. The Mets need to avoid giving players that one last contract.

Alright I had to vent this somewhere:

I got more fan mails from PhillyNation.com, wtf!!! So, I had to unsubscribe. Who knew I subscribed. When asked to comment as to why I’m unsubscribing I provided the following:

“I’m a f’in Met’s fan. Phillies nation makes me want to puke on a child. Oh wait then I’d be a Philly fan ;P”

    1. metsfan4decades

      hahahaha

I too get emails from that PhillyNation. I have no idea why either. Not like I ever registered or commented over there. I have read some posts and comments but that was about it.
