Mets 44th Overall Pick Michael Fulmer Tweets That He Has Agreed To A Deal

The 44th overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft Oklahoma RHP Michael Fulmer tweeted last night that he has agreed on a deal with the New York Mets and will withdraw his college commitment to Arkansas. (Sorry Arkansas)

Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed but with some speculating that Fulmer along with still unsigned 1st rd pick Brandon Nimmo possibly not signing till near the end of the deadline it’s good to see the Mets quickly moving along to sign their draft picks.

In a year where Oklahoma had many promising players taken in the draft like 4th overall pick Dylan Bundy of the Orioles and 7th overall pick Archie Bradley of the Diamondbacks to name a few. Fulmer was awarded the Ferguson Jenkins Award this year. An award presented to the top five high school baseball players in Oklahoma.

No no no. I just agreed to a contract today. I leave in a couple of weeks or so.RT @JustJalen01: @MFulmer12 woaahh you leave tmmr bro?less than a minute ago via Echofon Favorite Retweet Reply

That’s a blow to the phillies rotation for sure. I still wish the Mets traded for Oswalt at the time, but hindsight being 20/20, whew…

he always was a risk for that (he missed eptember a few years back with the Astros, and went through the whole “you need surgery probably but might be able to keep going with just rehab” debate at the time, picking rehab.

Phils pretty much got their money’s worth out of him though, even if this is it. And he is only their #4 starter, so not a huge loss!

Now, if one of the other older, high-mileage guys go down, they might start feeling a little bit of a pinch. But for now, probably won’t even slow them down.

Anyone who even loosely follows the Phillies probably saw this coming. He had back problems before he left for his hometown to help with the tornado cleanup. He came back after that with more or continued back problems. Last time we faced him, which I think was right after he returned, he was grimacing on the mound and I believe Ronnie commented on it.

I wondered how long it would be until he went down for the count.

I misread this at first. Thought it said 44th ROUND pick, and he seemed pretty talented for that!

now get #1 signed, and they are making good progress

He’s too talented to be around at 44 overall, so it’s a great pick and a great job to have him signed in time to pitch some in the minors this year.

On a very superficial level I often react to prospects based on their name. As in, does he have a name that sounds like a baseball player. Michael Fullmer? Yes, fits the bill sounds like a baseball player. The rest I leave to scouts as drafting prospects in baseball is the biggest crapshoot out of all major sports. So “what’s in a name” is as good a method as any as I have for setting expectations. Checking his grade on a Draft Report at Baseball News Hound has his grade at 55 which correlates to projecting to a servicable everyday player in the majors. Hell, I’ll take it. As nj in tejas says “sign’m all”. The sooner the better in my book. Now get Nimmo signed, which probably will take awhile, and I’ll be downright pleased. Oh, for what it’s worth Nimmo graded a 61. Anything over 60 projected to Star caliber. 55-60 = everyday player with occassional all-star appearances. Interesting site, and a good website name…for what’s in a name.

lol stick. It did make me feel old to start humming Spirit in the Sky immediately upon reading the name…

Good to read. Next, Nimmo – which I’m thinking will get done. Probably go down to the wire though and cost a bit but do it, Sandy.

There is a write about Nimmo on MetsBlog. From that and other articles I’ve read, it was known that if you want Nimmo you need to throw a bunch of money at him. So I think it will get done and based on the other signing maybe it will get done sooner than later.
