The “We Miss Rusty!” Open Thread For Tuesday June 28, 2011

One of our most loyal readers NJStuckInTX misses our vacationing Rusty Jr.’s Infamy post and its function as the daily open thread. Who doesn’t?

What DID happen today in Met history?

What WILL we do without Rusty’s post?

So NJTX, you asked for it, you got it!

Does Cecil Fielder know something when he says Prince might come to Queens?

Will Ike even be able to run enough to play RF?

Will the team finally break the .500 mark tonight for the first time since they were in Philly the second series of the year?

Will Davey Johnson work his magic and have the Nats in 2nd place by the end of the year?

Will Jason Bay’s skyrocketing SLG (now at .313 with a bullet!) keep shooting upwards?

Has a new stat yet been contrived so that Pagan can be ranked as one of baseball’s best outfielders again?

Will Jose catch Tulo in balloting and start at SS in the All Star Game?

Does Jose really want Crawford money or more, or does he just want to see the postseason again before senility sets in?

Can Pelf really be this bad?

Should Parnell just stay in A ball where he could be a star?

Will Frank McCourt raid Dodger archives and try to sell Fred some cool old items to raise pocket money for meals?

Will MANNY stage a real Million Manny March outside Dodger Stadium to be sure he gets his dough?

Will the Phils ever again miss the playoffs?

How much DID last year’s team slack off?

Will the OTHER orange and blue–the Miami Dolphins–get back to the postseason if there IS a season? (Oops, wrong sport…)

Let us know what YOU think, and let us hope that TRDMB historian and most prolific of contributors Rusty Jr. and his lovely wife Mrs. Rusty Jr. are having an absolutely fantastic time basking in the Florida sun.

    Ok ok – briefly now

    Born on this date:
    Don Baylor (1949)
    Pitcher, Joe Sambito (1952)
And precursor to Shawn Green Richard Hidalgo (1975)
Be back to work on Saturday

there seem to be quite a few recognizable names that I never knew played on the mets (or have blocked out, or I am just getting senile). Don baylor?

        I think Baylor coached?

        1. stickguy

that sounds familiar. I was thinking he played for them, and that I could not remember!

  2. stickguy

I’ll play, but I couldn’t make it to the bottom of the list (short attention span).

Does Cecil Fielder know something when he says Prince might come to Queens? >> He knows he wants his son to make as much as possible so he can freeload off of him.

Will Ike even be able to run enough to play RF? >> Not on 1 leg and a prosthetic foot. Hell, not on 2 legs either.

Will the team finally break the .500 mark tonight for the first time since they were in Philly the second series of the year? >> Yes.

Will Davey Johnson work his magic and have the Nats in 2nd place by the end of the year? >> No.

Will Jason Bay’s skyrocketing SLG (now at .313 with a bullet!) keep shooting upwards? >> No. might creep up slightly though.

Has a new stat yet been contrived so that Pagan can be ranked as one of baseball’s best outfielders again? >> Einstein couldn’t come up with that.

Will the Phils ever again miss the playoffs? >> yes of course you filthy philly lover. Won’t take much longer. I hope. This was a fluke golden age for them, and like all golden ages, they get old and fade away. Phils are 2 more SP injuries from being pretty damned average, and they are getting old. And Hamels will be a Yankee in 2013.

    LOL – love it, Kingman.

I could answer each question but you all probably know my position on many of them by now. I’ll just sum it up with two comments:

    - Sign Reyes
    - Phillies suck

And how much would you be willing to give to Nails to bail him out of jail?

    http://savelenny.com/

(you just can’t make this stuff up)

    1. stickguy

short and sweet. And I agree.

as to nails, nothing. at this point, he is probably safer in jail!

      1. metsfan4decades

Madson to the 15 day DL.

They’ll be looking for BP help for sure. Lidge, Madson, Contrares all out and Romero released. I doubt they’ll be buyers for KRod but I’m reading many of the Philly fans would like to see Amaro pick up Beltran.

        1. stickguy

something weird going on with Madson I think.

that team right now is all in on the 3 man rotation to carry them. Pen has been better than expected, largely IMO due to minimal use!

and even the FO admits they have too much trouble scoring runs quite often, and need a RH bat that does not suck.

    I say Yes to all.

    Ask and ye shall receive!!!

    Thanks King of Kongs!

Tigers starting pitching is pretty bad outside of Verlander… hopefully the Mets can get 2 of 3 from them.

    1. saltygary

      Max Scherzer
      W-L 9-3
      ERA 4.47
      K 92
      Walks 35
      WHIP 1.41

His ERA is high but that is also a result of a tougher offensive league. Porcello is better than most of the current Mets pitchers. Don’t underestimate these guys.

      1. metsfan4decades

I’m not sure that ERA impresses me as much as that WHIP does. yikes! Even if it is a tougher offensive league, it still shows he has a problem keeping them off the base paths.

Are trying to say the Mets current mode of small ball might fail against Scherzer? I’m kinda getting used to scoring about 5 runs off 15 hits – LOL.

        1. saltygary

I would look at it as he gives up a lot of hits because his k/bb ratio is great and his team scores enough runs to make up for it.

      2. stickguy

those are pelf like numbers there.

        1. saltygary

          Keep dreaming dude:

          W-L 4-6
          ERA 4.78
          K 53
          Walks 25
          WHIP 1.31

          1. kistics

            Scherzer’s WHIP is higher…

          2. wannybackstra

which is fine when you strike out twice as many hitters.

          3. kistics

But Pelf is not a strike out pitcher.

I’m not defending Pelf by any means. But making a blanket statement of their pitcher is better than any of the Mets pitcher is not fair.

          4. stickguy

I was really referring to the higher WHIP being like pelf, with a similar ERA overall.

less Ks, but the guys are still making outs (or if you prefer, not getting on base).

          5. kistics

I agree. Regardless of how many you can strike out or how well you pitch in certain outings, if your ERA and WHIP are similar you are who you are.

Don’t get me wrong, I would switch Scherzer for Pelf any second because I think Scherzer’s ceiling is so much higher than Pelf.

      3. kistics

I don’t doubt Scherzer’s ability to strike out hitters. But he also has not been consistent at all.

Porcello is better than most of the current Mets pitchers? Really? His last two outings were against COL and LAD

        at COL 3.0IP, 8H, 6ER, 2BB, 0K
        at LAD 4.2IP, 9H, 5ER, 1BB, 2K

His last 6 outings he averages, 5.0IP, 6.84 ERA, opp BA .323/.379/.488

        Not really good at all.

        1. wannybackstra

Scherzer is one of the best pitchers in the AL. He’s had 6 really bad starts (out of 17) that have inflated his numbers. When he’s on he’s impossible to hit. In those 6 starts he gave up 5 or more runs. In his other 11 stars he’s given up as many as 3 just ONE TIME!!!!

Before the six game time period you reference about Porcello his ERA for the rest of the season was 3.08. The kid is 22 and can pitch. Every pitcher goes through a rough period in the season.

          1. wannybackstra

that’s 10 starts with under 3 runs. for comparison’s sake, pelfrey has done that 7 times.

          2. kistics

Niese has done that 11 times out of 16 starts he has made. If you take out the first 3 games of the season, Niese’s ERA is at 3.00

Gee has given up less than 3 runs 8 times out of 12 starts. And if you take out his one bad outing, his ERA is way below 3.00

Capuano gave up 3 runs or less in 9 times out of 14 starts he has made. If you take out couple bad outings for him, his ERA should show around 3.00 as well.

Porcello may have had good rookie season, but his record is what it is. You can’t discount what he has done past 6 outings and say he’s better than any of the current Mets pitchers.

          3. kistics

So if Scherzer has been really bad 6 times and very good in 11 times, isn’t that a definition of inconsistency?

I mean if you take out Ollie’s bad outings, his numbers are pretty dominant too.

    Miss who?

j/k – before there was trdmb there was many a late night chat at some other site between the evil trio of king, rusty & haz. Probably why we all got booted….thankfully.

Hope he’s havin’ a fine time in fla. And stellar work picking up the slack on this post kman26.
