The Mets beat the Tigers again to the score of 16-9. Although the Mets have been out homered in this road trip 13-3, the Mets have 52 runs on 69 hits on their 4 game road trip, hitting .386 and generally just kicking ass. Chris Cappuano started for the Mets and started off great but ran out of steam in the 6th. Cap had 2 run ball going for 6 innings but had his night spoiled by Miggy who hit a 445 ft bomb to dead center for 3 runs. By this time however, the Mets had already scored 8 runs! Jose Reyes got the party started as usual with a single to start off the game and advanced on a bad pick of throw. After flyouts by Turner and Beltran, Jose would come home on a wild pitch to put the Mets on the board. Paulino singled right after and Jason Bay drew a walk. Angel Pagan singled(noticing a theme here…) to load the bases but Jose Reyes Scott Hairston would hit a long triple to drive in another 3 runs to put the Mets up 4. Mets would score again in the third via an Angel Pagan single to drive in Bay. Mets single’s mischef continued in the 5th with a single by Turner, followed by…you guessed it, a single by Carlos Beltran. Paulino would double to score Turner and move Beltran to third. Jason Bay would…single…to drive in Beltran and Paulino would also score on a boot by Austin Jackson. The Mets were leading 8-2 going into the 6th when suddenly the Tigers woke up.
Chris had an easy going night, clubs up 6, got a low pitch count and it seems everything is going right for the Mets. Wells greets Chris in the 6th with a single, followed by a Magglio double. Miguel, who already had a homer for the night decided to double down and hit an inside change up deep to dead center to bring the Tigers closer 8-5. That would be all for Chris who didnt retire a batter but was in line for the win. Beato came in and got Victor Martinez to ground out for the 1st out but gave up a seriously wind aided home run to Peralta. Beato would bear down and get the last two outs to end that inning but not before the Tigers pulled within 2.
The Mets answer back in the 7th with yet another…single by Carlos Beltran to start the inning. Paulino would fly out and Bay would work a walk to put two on and 1 out. Pagan grounded into a fielders choice that put runners in the corners with 2 out. Scott Hairston would walk to load the bases and Daniel Murphy hit a seeing eye single to score two runs and move the Mets up 4 runs. Reyes, who started off the season 2-25 with RISP and is now hitting .450 with RISP flew out to end the inning. Thats what it is about this team, there not trying to do too much. They know they are not going to beat you with the home run ball but what they will do is hustle on the bases, stay within themselves at the plate and just manufacture runs.

This cat is very creepy. Anyway, things just got down right weird in the bottom 7th. Beato gave up a double to Rayburn but got Jackson to fly out which Raburn advanced on. Then s*** hit the fan. The Tigers pinch hit a left hander Andy Dirks for Wells. The Mets naturally went to their left handed relief pitcher Byrdak except for one little problem…Byrdak was not even warming up when they called him. Bobby Parnell was the only one throwing in the bullpen and even thought it was his name that was called when he saw Terry come out of the dugout. He made it about 10 steps into the field before being called back for Byrdak. Now Byrdak was throwing earlier but was not throwing prior to being called in. Byrdak got in his 8 warm up pitches on the mound and on his second pitch to Andy Dirks, he gave up a deep home run that put the Tigers closer 10-8. Byrdak was visibly pissed on the mound and when Terry came out to relieve Byrdak in favor for Bobby, there was some verbal exchange between the two(maybe an apology? Who knows). Bobby came in and got Maggz to ground out before having to face Miguel Cabrera. Mid at bat, Bobby turned on the jets and literally threw about 6-8 pitches in a row 100 mph or harder before walking Cabrera on a 3-2 slider. Bobby would bounce back to get Martinez on a ground out to end the inning.
This must be the longest post game ever lol. The Mets would again fight back(noticing a theme here) in the 8th, starting off with yet another single, this time by Justin Turner. Carlos Beltran would fly out for the first out but Paulino came through with yets another single for the Mets. Jason Bay would strike out for the 2nd out but Angel would come though big time and drive in a run with a long single. The Tigers intentionally walked Scott Hairston to get to Daniel Murphy. Mets have been 7-15 with RISP to this point tonight. After Daniel fought back to a full count, he came through with a single up the middle to drive in two runs moving Hairston to 3rd. Ruben Tejada didnt want to be left out and hit a single up the middle to plate yet another run, pushing the Met lead to 14-8. Let me stop for a moment to point out something, Mets have 20 of 27 runs coming with 2 outs, 7 out of the 9 starters had multi hit games, Mets have scored 14 runs 3 times in their last 4 games…and this is coming against not one but TWO 1st place teams! Reyes flew out to end the inning. Mets have never scored more than 50 runs in 4 games in their history.

Tigers would put up another run in the bottom 8th off Izzy but pretty much just like the Tiger fans that emptied the stadium after the top of the 8th knew, it was over. Unfortunately, nobody told the Mets. Paulino would get a double with 2 outs in the 9th. Jason Bay would draw his 4th walk of the game and Angel Pagan would again come through with a 2 run double to push the Mets lead to 16-9. At this point, the Tigers got the message and sent out their right fielder Don Kelly to finish off the inning. Kelly would retire Scott to end the inning but not before the Mets have set a new club record with 52 runs in 4 games. Mets set a season high 19 hits in one game. Howard Johnson should never comment on the Mets offense from here on imo. This route gets completed by D.J. Carrasco in ironic fashion for this game…1-2-3. Mets move to two games over .500.

Nice Dirty. Very Grave-esq.
This must be the longest post game ever lol.
Points for keeping up. I watched the whole game and I couldn’t tell you at this point who did what.
We’re on a roll. Who would have thought, going into this series? — Which, by the way, we’ve already won.
Dare I ask – Sweep? (hey, anything is possible)

HAHA! That cat picture is awesome!
The Mets had the eye, ear, nose, and throat, and the tail, the claws, the teeth, and every damn other part of the tiger too.
Wow.
Who ARE these guys?
Just amazing.
Win the first two of the series; nice work.
Tomorrow would be a great win, but also not a horrible loss.
4-1 thus far on a 6-game road trip to two of the AL’s first place teams?
Amazin’.

Off note:
‘Willie Harris has flown to NY. Wife unexpectedly had her water break very early.’
According to TC, it’s a little too eary. Hope everything turns out fine for them and the baby.

Also, Terry took full responsibility for that BP screw up.
Said, he knew he got him up the inning before in case there was a need and just assumed he was ready as well the following inning.
No matter whose fault it was – BP coach, whoever – nice to see him stepping up and just taking responsibility right off the bat.

FMart on his way to Detroit to take Harris’ place on the roster. So I guess he’ll be out for the allowed 3-7 day leave and Martinez here through the Yankee series.

Mets have scored 52 runs over the last 4 games and are 4-0 in that span.
That is an average of 13 runs a game.
I would hope the Mets are 4-0 in that span.
I don’t want to be a downer and all but you can guess where i am going with this.
The concern is you know the Mets can not continue to avg 13 runs a game. I am just hoping they can continue to avg at least 5 runs a game.

seasons have peaks and valleys. And teams have to pile up wins during the good times, to have a cushion for the inevitable rough patches.
but, certainly impressive and enjoyable nonetheless.
Just have to get back to solid SP performances day after day.
Need to double check, but once they get through this weekend, the only particularly potent offense that I remember coming up is the Reds (they still potent?) The other good teams they face through July are more pitching based, without much in the way of offense.

I don’t necessarily doubt the ability of the offense to put some runs on the board. I just hope the BP doesn’t give them all back.
This BP is shaky, to say the least.

Is it really necessary for the mass media to broadcast all over the world that Harris’ wife is in early labor?
I wish these reporters covering the team would realize that there are things to broadcast and there are things to keep to yourself.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Harris family.

Is anyone concerned about Izzy?
Past 15 games he has pitched (going back to 5/26) his stats are 10.2IP, 6ER, 5BB, 8K, 5.06ERA.
I don’t know about you, but past month or so, he has not looked good at all. His curveball is non-existent. He keeps on falling behind the hitters. He leaves all his pitches up. Lately I have no confidence in him at all.

Hence my firm feeling this team should be sellers at the trade deadline. I can’t see this team sustaining what they are doing. even look at last night, 14 runs. That’s fantastic. But they let up 8. It’s a rare occasion you win a game when you let up 8 runs.
Their BP is going to expose them.

One item that was sitting in my brain is how will the team adjust once Wright comes back? Wright kept trying to put the team on his shoulders but he wasn’t that guy, so Reyes stood up and became that guy. Can Wright feed off that energy and be comfortable as a table setter or will he suck some life out of the room because he is trying too hard again? I feel everything will be fine but there are many examples where a star player returns after a long period and the clubhouse can change. Thoughts?

I think Wright will be fine. Murphy will still get the bulk of PT as I imagine Tejada would be sent down. I’m not sure how Turner will react as he may be taken out of the lineup against RHPs as Duda will probably start at 1B and Murphy 2B.
