Hope you all enjoyed the fireworks. Let’s see what the minors had in store for us.
Syracuse 4, Buffalo 2
Luis Hernandez’ 2 run pinch single tied the game in the top of the 7th, but Dale Thayer gave the two runs right back in the bottom of the frame and that was the difference. Nick Evans was 1 for 3 and the new healthy (for now) Zach Lutz was 1 for 4.
Binghamton 7, Portland 6
The B-Mets had a seven run explosion in the 2nd, and the pitching staff barely hung on as Binghamton beat the Sea Dogs. What we all want to know is how Jeurys Familia did in his first start in over two weeks, so let’s take a peek, shall we? 5IP, O runs, 3 hits, 3BB, 6K – to notch his first win at Double A. His ERA is now 3.02. Jordanny Valdespin continues his hot hitting, going 2 for 4 with a run scored. This was his fifth straight multi-hit game.
Fort Myers 9, St. Lucie 5
The Miracle broke through for a 5 run third inning off Scott Moviel, sinking any chance the PSL Mets had to take this one. Juan Ligares knocked in two runs, and Jefry Marte, Cory Vaughn, Cesar Puello and Wilmer Flores all had a hit.
Savannah 6, Augusta 5 (10 innings)
Hamilton Bennet and his Moustache of Doom coughed up the lead in the 9th inning, but Alberto Cordero singled in Rafael Fernandez in the bottom of the 10th to win it. Aderlin Rodriguez went 1 for 5 but knocked in two key runs.
Brooklyn 10, Staten Island 3
After a pair of tough losses, the Cyclones brought their hitting shoes out for the 4th of July. Ismael Tijerina hit a solo homer and knocked in another run as part of a 13 hit barrage. Brian Harrison went 3 for 5 with 3 RBNI, and Charles Thurber followed suit with 2 RBI.
Kingsport 7, Johnson City 6 (13 innings)
The K-Mets starting pitching just has not been good thus far. Last night Domingo Tapia was bombed for 9 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits in just 3.2 innings. The offense tried to make it interesting as 2B TJ Rivera was 2 for 4 with 2 runs and an RBI, OF Dustin Lawley was 4 for 5 with a 3 run homer as part of a 4 RBI night, and C Camden Maron was 3 for 5 with a run.

Ah, Lutz is back? I kind of expected to hear he was shut down for the season with a concussion. Good for him. Wonder if he’ll pick up where he left off and if we’ll see him with a call up in Sep.
Go Jeurys.

For whatever it is worth, Keith Law believes that Familia will ultimately end up in the pen.

I’ve heard plenty of people say the same, but I think if you give him time to develop his secondary pitches he can be a mid rotation starter, if not there’s nothing wrong with a hard throwing reliever.

I think some of the writers have a macro written to automatically insert “will be a pen arm” into anything written about a Met pitcher.

that’s not true. law has advocated for mejia to start.

Dang. I don’t know about Law but I’ve seen others indicating Mejia will probably wind up in the pen. If the same is true for Famillia, we’ll have one hell of a pen and no SPs.
I guess our eggs will all be in Harvey’s basket.

well, there were people saying he was going to end up in the pen also after he was drafted.
And familia has been doing fine as a SP so far, so nothing seems to pop out that says he can’t be a SP.
and even if he needs to improve 1-2 of his pitches, well, so what? The kid is about 20, and in the lower minors. pretty much every pitcher at that stage needs to be working on something, otherwise they would be a lot higher up!
he has good stuff, and seems to have no issues with stamina, so hell yeah he stays at SP.

That surely seems odd as he might be the only one with that stance. I think you leave them both at sp until the last possible moment.

I agree with you about not converting them to relievers until they fail as starters (stupid move to move Mejia to the pen last year) but I’ve seen other projections for Familia as a reliever including Fangraphs. I think Kevin Goldstein of BaseballProspectus too but I could be mistaken.

Sorry to that was in response to starting Mejia. Either way no reason to move either. I have not read enough on Familia’s delivery but with Mejia I think most have sited arm issues as the reason for a bp landing.
