I still believe that regardless of what the Mets record is, the Phillies and Braves are just so far ahead that even if the Mets keep winning, it wont be enough.

The Phillies are on pace for 100+ wins and the Braves are on pace for 95+ so it would be unrealistic to expect us to contend

True but you can’t pull off the “fire sell” when you are 5-8 games above .500 regardless. No GM would do that to his players or fans no matter how logical.

The best way to look at it would be like the Rays, be both buyers AND sellers.

        agreed.

some people seem to think that trading anyone is “giving up” and not trying to compete.

What they should be doing is looking at what they have in excess (or can replace internally with comparable) and trading that (if the return is right) regardless.

A loogy, if you have a couple more in the minors, could fit that bill. Even a guy like Capu, if you had a ready replacement (which of course the Mets don’t).

But, if you aren’t anything more than a 100-1 long shot, then do whatever makes sense for the future.

And, the only team I can recall being “close” (as in 5 games or so out) and having a fire sale anyway is the White sox of a few years ago. That certainly was a case of a GM looking at the team, and the competition (and effectively ignoring the record) and doing what he thought had to be done.

      I actually disagree.

Every time it looks as though it’s time to stick in a fork and look to 2012 (as it did in the 9th Sunday) they come right back.

Look at how they’ve done with this crazy schedule, as MF4D wisely told us to be patient with.

If they remain above .500 through August when they start playing the Marlins and Padres and Wright and Johan might be back?

We beat the Braves 4 of the last 6.

Things could turn quickly, but no way in hell are we sellers yet.

actually, Sandy is probably right. The next 12 include 3 in SF, then 3 with the Phils and 3 with St. Louis. Not a particularly easy stretch (other 3 are 2 more with LA and a stray with the marlins).

So, if they go 5-7, and are sitting at .500 even on 7/21, are you really going to go out and start buying (especially if the braves pad their lead some more)? Not likely.

but, somehow go 7-5 while the Braves slip closer, and you just might.

This isn’t news, IMO. We knew this all along. Sandy has been saying this all along. Heck, everyone has been saying ‘depending on where they are in the standings come mid/end of July’….for months now.
