This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” A Few Quick Questions ” Edition 07-09-11

Why ask Why ?

Wow what a game last night !!! I wish I could say I was awake to watch the entire thing – but I would be lying.
For a team that many members of the Sports Media and fans alike had written off as a sub .500 team, these Mets have played the game like men on a mission.

Many people figured that this current road trip could have been the Mets Waterloo, but so far they are 4-1 on this 7 game stand. Not too shabby eh ?

Considering last year when they played their major West Coast road trip, their hopes of any kind of late season momentum had evaporated.

So I have a few questions to ask as this team cruises into the All-Star break with a plus .500 record ( they secured that with last nights win against the Giants)

1. Do you think the Mets trade Carlos Beltran before the July 31st trade deadline ?

2. Do you think that it is a given that Francisco Rodriguez will end the season on another team ?

3. Do You think the Mets may be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline ?

4.Are you pleasantly surprised by how well the Mets have been playing – or are you one of those negative naboobs that feel anything less than a playoff berth is a failure?

And with that Said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Unsung hero of the ’73 season, pitcher George Stone is 65 (1946) . If you talk to Jerry Koosman, he still blames then manager, Yogi Berra for not starting a well rested George Stone in game 6 of the ’73 World Series – a game the Mets ended up losing 3-2 , essentially killing any momentum the Mets had at that point to win the Championship.

The New York Mets signed free agent middle reliever, Jerrod Riggan on July 9, 1998. He would later be included in the deal that brought Roberto Almomar to the Mets.

The New York Mets released outfielder, Darryl Hamilton on July 9,2001

Mo Vaughn bought out Fisherman’s Wharf of all their Dungeness Crabs ! Needless to say Sushi Bars and trendy restaurants everywhere are suffering !

    1. Do you think the Mets trade Carlos Beltran before the July 31st trade deadline ?

SG: 50/50 on this, depends on if they can inch a little closer to the WC, Ike/DW are back (or every close to it for Ike), and if they get blown away with an offer.

    2. Do you think that it is a given that Francisco Rodriguez will end the season on another team ?

    SG: likely, but not guaranteed.

    3. Do You think the Mets may be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline ?

SG: I will straddle the fence and go with both.  They may trade something they can’t refuse like K Rod, but they will buy some minor parts (like a pen arm?).  But, right now, I don’t see an obvious need to fill that they could likely pick up on the open market.

4.Are you pleasantly surprised by how well the Mets have
been playing – or are you one of those negative naboobs that feel
anything less than a playoff berth is a failure?

SG: I am happy to see, but remember, I am one of the few that said this was a mid-80′s team anyway, with potential for upper 80′s and WC contention with a few lucky breaks.

    1.  Tough question on Carlos.  Right now I’ll give it 60/40 they trade him.

    2.  KRod:  I’ll give this 80/20 he’s not a Met come end of this season.

    3.  I think we’ll be sellers to a small degree b/c no matter what the standings, I still see KRod being traded.  Beltran could be right behind him.  If we slip further in the standings the degree of selling becomes larger.
If we’re still in the race, and KRod is traded I’ll not be surprised to see a BP arm added.

    4.  I more than pleasantly surprised.  This team is easy to root for and just plain fun to watch.

If a decent deal is offered, I’d trade Beltran regardless of standings. If they keep him and Rodriguez, then Sandy better justify those non-moves with a playoff berth.

I dint think it’s a given that Frankie goes. Totally depends on the offers available.

Definitely pleasantly surprised with how they’ve played. I never expected a playoff push, and still don’t, as I think they’re playing above their talent level currently. The only way I say ‘playoffs or bust’ is if they keep Frankie and get nothing for Beltran.

As for buyers or sellers, they should only ‘buy’ if they legitimately think they can make themselves better than the other wc teams, which I don’t see happening.

Sorry for the double post. My phone fails at life.

    1. I think they’ll trade Beltran, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll go before 7/31. I think Sandy won’t just give him up: he’ll hold on to Beltran if he doesn’t receive fair value. I could definitely see a contender calling in August, desperate to replace an injured player.

    2. I don’t think it’s “a given” that they move K-Rod. It would be if they could guarantee that there were buyers available, but his current contract combined with that option could very well scare everyone else off. I think Sandy would jump on it if he could, but the market may not be there.

    3. I don’t know that they’ll be either: they’ll let the market (not their record) dictate. I could see them adding major league talent if the price is right. It really depends on what other teams are offering.

    4. I’m not really surprised by their record: I had them winning 87 (or maybe 86, I can’t remember) before the season started. I am surprised that they’ve been so fun to watch. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed how they’ve won: they’re a lot more exciting and vibrant than I expected.

Adios Los….K Rod will be here since he’ll surpass his incentive & they have to pay him anyway – traded for draft pick at best…Mets will sell anyone and everything….Greatly surprised at the result posted thus far despite far too many mgr errors, injuries and general poor roster makeup…I’ll always be a diehard realistic fan y’all know that…but the smoke willl probably clear and a few mirrors will break in the 2nd half ..End Result 79 wins

Mets will sell anyone and everything?

      I’m really doubting that one.

Sandy finds himself in a difficult position. Realistically
the numbers don’t support a Mets WC run. Assuming when healthy and if everyone
else maintains their current performance level the Mets could mirror the Braves
second half pace. But that would leave them 7.5 games behind the Braves. Thus
they would have to outperform the Braves by 7.5 games and unless the Braves
collapse the Mets task may be insurmountable. So Sandy may discuss the WC but
he may very well be predominately thinking more long term than this year. So the question to
be considered is if healthy are the Mets strong enough to be a contender next
year with the current cast? He may conclude that to ascend to the next level
the team will have to temporarily take a step backwards. If that’s the case and
if you factor in the Wilpon’s finances then you may see some significant trades
before the end of this month and the second half could reflect that step
    backwards.
