Not shocking, but a little surprised that it happened this soon. I don’t think that this means that Beltran and perhaps other trades are inevitable, because K-Rod was not an everyday player, and I think getting David and Ike back into the lineup will make more of an impact that K-Rod leaving, so getting those guys back could help close the gap in the standings.
On the field, I guess the assumption is that Parnell closes, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Beato in that role, and of course Izzy makes a lot of sense if you crawl back in the race. Also, my guess is Igarashi comes back up, and we’ve all seen his ups and downs in the big leagues, but he has been lights out in Buffalo since his last demotion.
Trading KRod was a no-brainer for Alderson with an inexpensive in-house alternative in Parnell waiting in the wings and seemingly ready to fulfill his potential and step into the closer role. It will be interesting to see how much the cash considerations were and who the two players to be named turn out to be. KRod had a bumpy 2+ years but he was mostly effective and always entertaining to watch on the field. at the end of the day, this was all about the payroll. As much as I love Isy and value his desire to stay with the team, he is wearing down and should be the next one to go. Since its not a salary dump in his case, maybe they can get a prospect back. Reyes is going no where so the only real decision left is whether to trade Beltran, who has been a great Mets player. As much as I’d hate to see him go and feel the team and fans would view a Beltran trade as a raising of the white flag of surrender, I believe he probably and unfortunately will be traded too, and with his departure a core member of the 2006-2008 playoff contending team will finally move on.

The Brewers system is very thin. It’ll be interesting to see what the haul is

And so it begins.
Not sure about the PTBNL though. Here’s hoping we get something serviceable back.
