Last Night on the Farm – 7/12/11

Another slow night, with the upper levels prepping for their all-star games, but there was plenty of noteworthy stuff down in the Gulf Coast League:

Savannah at Lexington PPD

Danville 8, Kingsport 2

More struggles for the K-Mets starters.  Akeel Morris gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, walking 3 and striking out 5.  The K-Mets bats managed just 3 hits.  One of those hits came from Greg Pron, who drove in both runs.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Mets 3 (finished from July 7th)

Gilbert Gomez ended up with 3 hits and 2 RBI’s, but Martires Arias let up a run in the 8th and took the loss.

GCL Astros 17, GCL Mets 11

This was clearly a wild one.  A favorite of mine Eric Beaulac made the start on a rehab assignment.  Before the injury he made 7 appearances out of the St. Lucie bullpen and was off to a good start, but he got rocked in this one.  He allowed 5 base runners, 4 on walks, and they all scored before he could get out of the 1st inning.  It didn’t help that Craig Missigman gave up 5 more before he could get the final out of the 1st.  Down 10 runs, the Mets fought back, but their leaky bullpen surrendered 7 more to make a win impossible.  Colombian third baseman Sneider Batista was 3-6 with 2 RBI’s.  Gilbert Gomez and Ryan Hutson both had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.  Jorge Rivero got a call up from the Dominican Summer League (imagine the relief going from the Dominican heat to the Florida heat in the middle of July) and was 3-5.  But the best news was that catcher Kai Gronauer made his first rehab start, playing for the first time since early May.  He caught 5 innings and left after going 1-4 with an RBI.

Off topic but how has Havens been doing?

He hasn’t played since June 23 with a lower back strain.  It’s not his oblique, which is good, but he really needs to get healthy and be playing everyday.

I forgave him for missing so much time with the rib/oblique, but now he is starting to annoy me!

I want him playing everyday by next year in Queens, and this is not helping.

Honestly the way Turner and Murphy have played I am in no rush.

true, but I think he brings the most upside and best glove.

wonder what Murphy will do at 2B if Ike comes back at the end of the month?  He seemed to be OK there early in the year.
