Some Highlights From Alderson’s Press Conference On The KRod trade

Here are some of things said during Alderson’s conference with the media.

  • Some things may be available early in July rather than later in July in regards to making trade now.
  • Mets had been in discussion with several teams for some time going as far back as a few weeks.
  • The KRod trade should not signal anything about Beltran.
  • Thinks the team anticipated the KRod move and therefore does not think it will have a negative impact on the players.
  • Says Boras didn’t have much of an impact in decision to move Krod.
  • Money being sent is more that the 3.5M buyout but less than what is owed to him for remainder of season.
  • Mets can look forward to considerably more payroll flexibility now and how they can better allocate their resources.
  • One of the things out of the savings from KRod’s salary this year is it allows for new talent acquisition (amateur).

The interview has concluded we will try to get a transcript or audio of the interview and get it posted as soon as possible.

Just finished listening to this myself.
Very interesting, to say the least.  Especially like the way he handled the Reyes question from the NY Times:
‘Would you say you’re in a better position to sign Reyes today than you were yesterday?’
Sandy’s answer:  ‘Would you’?  hahaha  He said he’d leave it at that for now.

Especially like the way he tried to make it perfectly clear they are NOT throwing in the white towel right now.  The next 18 days or so will be very telling.  Said he wanted to make it perfectly clear this trade is completely independent of any potential trade with Beltran and shouldn’t signify anything on Beltran going forward.  Would like Beltran to stay.

His comments on his relationship with Frankie from the first he met him in ST and up to yesterday was very professional.
‘Since I arrived here and met Frankie from ST to this point – he’s been great.  Solid person, personable, good relationship.  For me, he’s been great for us, even off the field – surprisingly for some.  Team composition going foward – can’t read anything into it from this.

    Class.

    Well done, Sandy.

Yes I agree 4D and can I add your skill in transcribing some of what is said the way you do on the fly makes me wish you would reconsider being an author here.
      :-D

I wonder who Terry uses as the closer. gut feeling says he goes to Izzy but I would like to see Parnell.

all reasonable statements.  Honestly, while it probable doesn’t help the pen, I don’t think it will make a difference between playoffs or not this year.  Hell, with the way he has been iffy lately, depending on who fills the 2 holes (his and replacing that guy), they could be as good if not better.

So no, this does not IMO mean they are throwing in the towel on 2011.  it was a long shot already, and still is, but can still be done.

But, it has to make them better going forward.  better shot to keep reyes, add other talent, and real key, money to spend on premium amateur talent.

they will find a closer for 2012 that should do fine.  and be better beyond that in many ways.

Look it was a trade that had to be done but iffy?  The guy has saved 23/26?  and had 19 in a row? I think the pen will for sure suffer but again, had to be done.

read the lately part.  As MF is also aware, his FB has been weak for a while, and he has tailed off recently.  And the save #s are nice, but there have been some nail biters in there, and way too many baserunners.

bottom line, I will not be surprised to see him worse in the 2nd half than the first half.

But, still a major hit to the pen, but not insurmountable.

Lately he’s been very good.  Before that he went through a dead period for sure.

Lately (last 2 weeks) his last 5 games he has 5.2 innings, 5 hits,  1 walk, 5 k’s, 0 runs.

Again, had to be done but will be missed.

Another check mark on Sandy’s to do list.  Well done Mr. Alderson.

2012 Dark Horse: The return of soon to be free agent Heath Bell?  Who knows, could be worse alternatives though.

2011 Closer for the Balance: Clearly, Lucas Duda.  He does it all.

Now that I pulled the pin on the Duda grenade I’ll flee the room.

No way do they invest big money back into closer.

I agree, but I could see a scenario where if the in house options they try for the balance of the season absolutely stink up the joint then it might force them to spend some on a closer.  But probably not what a Bell would likely command.  Again, definitely dark horse, long shot, etc.

well, the big guy did pitch in HS and could throw in the 90s.

Just thinking (alway’s dangerous), maybe Sandy’s next order of business: Sign Nimmo seeing as we just took some cash off the books.  That would be a nice sign.

he did say that it would give them more flexibility in the amateur arena.
