What Exactly Does “top top” Mean?

While we wait to hear the Mets GM speak (which is currently under way) on the trading of Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers for cash and 2 players to be named later. The Brewers GM Doug Melvin already spoke earlier today on the MLB Network Radio channel on SiriusXM with hosts Jim Memolo and Mel Antonen.

Brewersbeat posted a section of that transcript on their blog and here is what Melvin had to say when asked by Memolo how would he classify the players on that PTBNL list from which the Mets could choose from?

“I believe any player that puts a Minor League uniform on has a chance to play in the big leagues. The level they play at is determined by the players. As far as our top top guys, it’s not going to happen but they’re players that could play in the big leagues.”

So my question is what do you think “top top” means? Top 5, 10, 15, 20 or (insert # here)?

Wow, no comments.  I guess no one knows the answer to this one.  I think that the top player coming from this trade will be… Jose Reyes.  But as for the Brewers prospects?  I expect two B prospects.  One with potential to be a starter and one more along the lines of a reliever or Murphy type.

    Just seeing this.
And I have no idea.  It’s obvious only the Mets FO and Brewers FO know who these 5 players are.  And from the looks of the Brewers farm system, having just about gutted it for the last 2 pitchers they traded for, I’m thinking what we get back won’t be all that great.

I’m still trying to figure out why the Brewers even made this trade.  I know their BP has one of the worst records this year and obviously they’re looking to improve on that and give them an edge of the Cards.  They’re not going to let that option vest, so KRod is going to be used sparingly in the 9th, if at all.  KRod hasn’t been used much in the 8th or non save situations with the Mets but when he was, he didn’t fare all that well.

I can’t imagine they’ll be offering him arbitration either so they won’t get the picks.  Although I suppose arbitration could be a possibility if they’re positive he’ll turn it down.

Only thing I can thing of is the Brewers know they’ll be losing Fielder in the off season so they’re going ‘all in’ now.  If I were a Brewer fan, not sure I’d be happy about this deal given the fact that there isn’t much left in their farm system to begin with and now they’re going to lose 2 more.  So on that note, I’m willing to bet these 2 prospects we get are not projecting to be all that good.
