Last Night on the Farm – 7/13/11

Even with AAA and AA playing their all-star games, we finally have a night with a full slate of games:

St. Lucie 6, Lakeland 5

Surprise, surprise, Darin Gorski wins again, giving him a 9-0 record.  Gorski was far from great, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings, but he did strike out 6 and do enough to get another win.  Eric Neisen pitched 2 shutout innings, and Josh Edgin picked up his 3rd save despite giving up a run.  Cory Vaughn hit a 3-run homer to give the Mets the lead and put Gorski in a position to get the win.  Wilmer Flores was 2-4 with an RBI.  Cesar Puello and Rylan Sandoval both doubled.

Lexington 2, Savannah 0 (Game 1)

Taylor Whitenton pitched 6 plus innings, but without any run support he took the loss.  Whitenton only gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 6, although he did walk 3, and gave up a walk-off homer in the 7th.  Alonzo Harris had 2 of the Sand Gnats 6 hits.  Darrell Ceciliani and Wilfredo Tovar both chipped in a hit each, but all 6 hits were singles, as Savannah failed to push a run across.

Savannah 7, Lexington 3 (Game 2)

Chase Huchingson pitched 3 shutout innings, as did Guillaume Leduc, who got the win.  The Gnats bats came alive in game 2 to help secure the win, especially the bat of Aderlin Rodriguez.  A-Rod his a grand slam in the top of the 7th, which turned out to be the difference in the game.  He finished the game with 5 RBI’s.  Darrell Ceciliani and Wilfredo Tovar each had 2 hits from the top spots in the order.

Auburn 9, Brooklyn 3

As seen on SNY, the Cyclones pitchers really struggled.  Marcos Camarena lasted only 1 inning and gave up 3 runs.  Steve Winnick promptly gave up 5 more runs.  By the time they started getting guys out the game was out of hand.  The Cyclones managed just 4 hits, and they were all singles.  On a side note, was it just me or did every pitcher on Auburn have an awful mustache?

Danville 6, Kingsport 1

The K-Mets got a decent outing from their starter for once, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.  Brian Valenzuela gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings, and Hansel Robles gave up 3 more.  The lone run came on a homerun by Greg Pron.

GCL Marlins 5, GCL Mets 1

Julian Hilario was a little better than what he’s been, but he still gave up 3 runs in 3 innings to take the loss.  Undrafted free agent out of UC Santa Barbara Beck Wheeler pitched 2.2 shutout innings.  For the season, Wheeler has pitched 8.2 innings, giving up just an unearned run on 3 hits, with 8 strikeouts and a single walk.  Eudy Pina doubled and drove home a run, but there wasn’t much offense out of the Mets.

In the AAA all-star game, Chris Schwinden pitched a perfect 5th inning, helping the beloved International League beat the dreaded Pacific Coast League 3-0.

In the Eastern League (AA) all-star game, Jordany Valdespin was 0-2 with a strikeout and Josh Satin was 0-1 with a walk.  Jeurys Familia was on the team but did not pitch.  The Western division beat Binghamton’s Eastern division 8-3.

Darin Gorski looks like someone we should all be keeping our eye on.

talk about coming out of nowhere.

also shows why it is so hard to judge lower lever prospects (and rate systems).  You never know when a “stud” is going to bust or a “nobody” will blossom.

Gorski seems to be a guy that had potential, but had coaching to tweak mechanics to add a few MPH (and some life) to his FB, and improve control/consistency at the same time.

I think he might have added another pitch to the repertoire too.

hey, that’s why they are in the minors, to learn and improve.  If they aren’t doing either, they need to be in the majors or home sitting on their couch.
