Post Game: Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better

Mets beat the Cardinals 6-5 in 10 innings tonight. Dickey went 6.1 innings giving up 4 runs with 4 k’s. The Cards got their 1st run in the first inning off a Matt Holiday sac fly. They would hang a 3 spot on Dickey in the 3rd to put the Mets down 4 runs. The Mets answered back quickly with a 2 spot of their own via a long double by Thole to drive in Duda and a seeing eye single by Dickey. Jason Bay was taken out in the 4th with a right hamstring issue. Carlos Beltran hit a booming 2 run home run in the 5th inning to tie the game.

Things would get VERY interesting in the 7th. Descalso greeted Dickey with a single up the middle but Angel Pagan booted the ground ball so the runner moved to 2nd. Nick Punto dropped a bunt to move Descalso to 3rd. Dickey would get replaced by Byrdak to face Schumaker. LaRussa would start cranking the managerial engine and subbed Tony Cruz instead. Byrdak got Cruz to ground out right to Jose who froze the runner at 3rd then threw to 1st for the out. LaRussa would strike again and bat Pujols for John Jay to which Collins countered with Beato. Beato got in front with an inside fastball, went to two strikes with a beautiful inside curve ball and retired Pujols on a fastball low that got popped up to keep the score 4-4.

Matt Holiday greeted Parnell with a hard fought single to start the 8th. Bobby would bounce back and get Berkman to fly out to center for the first out but it was deep enough for Matt to advance to second(or its just because Willie has no arm out in LF). David Freeze would ground out to move Matt to third with two out. Cody Rasmus was curiously intentionally walked to pitch to Laird. With two out and the Mets on the verge of getting out of the inning, Laird puts down a beautiful drag bunt to take advantage of a Murphy playing very deep at 3rd and put the Cards on top 5-4. Bobby would bounce back to get Descalso on strikes.

Mets 2 strike magic struck again the very next inning. Angel Pagan got the party started with a infield single(it was ruled an error at the time against Descalso but there was no way he could have played that ball cleanly). On a full count to Willie, Angel took off and because he did the grounder that Willie hit was not turned into a double play. Lucas Duda hit a laser but unfortunately it was right to the gold glove of Pujols for the 2nd out but Angel would advance to 3rd. In his first game since becoming a new dad(welcome to the club Josh), Thole hit a single to drive in Angel and tie up the ball game 5-5.

After Izzy put up two scoreless innings, Angel Pagan deposits a solo home run in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mets their first walk off win at home this season. Holy Crap…I feel for ya if you missed this one, hellova game! Full Wrap here

Love the post game wrap, Dirty.

I caught the whole game and you’re right – if you missed it, you missed a good one.

Good for RA keeping them in the game.
    Izzy did an outstanding job.
Carlos and his HR – man, I’m gonna miss him when he’s gone.

And Pagan…..made my night.  Good for him.  He needed that.

On a night that Reyes went a rare 0 for 5, his teammates stepped right up.

This was a pretty awesome game. Ya gotta think though that the price for izzy, byrdak and beltran just went up

I’m not sure what we get back for Izzy would make it worth trading him.  He might be worth more for us this second half of the season as someone (Parnell? Beato?) tries to step up and take over the closer role.  But I’ll trust Sandy on this one.

and la-la-la, I can’t hear you on Beltran.
        (LOL)

byrdak, he can go if someone wants to pony up something useful.

Oh, and besides the walk off win, there was the entire game entertainment of GKR broadcasting from the Pepsi Porch.  Really enjoyed that.  Keith’s sampling the food, complaining about the prices.  And that lucky fan who caught Beltran’s HR and got on air as GKR autographed it.

i saw that too.  It was a $20.  $3.50 tip ain’t too shabby.  The hotdog guy was nervous.  Kept dropping the condiments.

Dirty a fine wrap-up in the mode of Heb. BTW I didn’t realize you were an Irving Berlin fan and was well acquainted with “Annie Get Your Gun.”

I caught bits and pieces of the game and it appeared to be an entertaining game. Of course the right team winning improved the game immeasurably.

Since minor league roster fillers, AAAA players and major league bench players are readily available during the offseason I don’t think it makes sense to trade someone unless you get something significant in return. The additional revenue from the increase in attendance to see a competitive team that wins occasionally will offset the salaries owed to these players the rest of the season.
