The Mets claimed 1B/OF Mike Baxter off of waivers form the San Diego Padres last night. The 25 year old (from Queens incidentally) was a 4th round pick of the 2005 draft out of Vanderbilt hit .301/.382/.517 for AAA Portland last year and was 1 for 8 with the Padres. A torn ligament in his thumb has shelved him most of this season (he shortly began rehab in Hi-A). Once healthy, he should report to Buffalo.
This is a shrewd move in my opinion, finding the undervalued talent and making a low cost acquisition (see Turner, Justin). It will be interesting to see how he handles himself at Buffalo, and given the state of things, how quickly he can make it to Queens – and I don’t mean visiting his family!
