Well the three ring circus that was the Carlos Beltran trade talks has finally ended, and general manager has managed to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. He has done what all the sports pundits and pontificators claimed that he could not do – Get a top flight prospect for Beltran !
I never harbored any doubt that Alderson would settle for just a mid level prospect for Beltran. Instead we get the prized pitching prospect from the Giants Oraganization, Zach Wheeler ! He has showed us that yes he is dumping salary, but he is not just taking the other organizations flotsam and jetsam ( i.e: the Chris Carter for Bill Wagner deal). Now I do not know if Sandy is finished with the wheeling and dealing, but what I do know is that it is now in Terry Collins job to motivate this team.
By the looks of last night’s game it sure seems that Collin’s has the attention of this team. They played with a chip on their shoulder, and showed no fear against a pitcher that normally owns them ( Bronson Arroyo). They played with the exception of a Lucas Duda fielding miscue , a rather crisp game. Hell even Mike Pelfrey looked like the ” Big Pelf ” from the first half of last season.
This team is on a mission of relevancy. In some respects they are on a Quixotic quest to make the post season. But I think most of this fan base ( and secretly the front office) will settle for a record that is a few games north of .500. Is this an impossible dream ? Will this team meltdown in the dog days of August, like they have in the past two seasons ?
All I know is that there are 58 games left for this team to reach the goal of trying to erase the pain of the last two seasons. I am not saying that finishing over .500 should be celebrated with bottles of champagne uncorking. But still it should be considered a stepping stone towards relevance, and players such as Wright and Reyes , Dickey and Beato have to all work together to get this job done.
And, so far they have accomplished this with a fire that us fans have not seen since the early part of the ’08 season. We have both Alderson and Collins to thank for this.
Amd with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!!
The New York Mets purchased the contract of relief pitcher, Skip Lockwood from the Oakland Athletics on July 28, 1975. Lockwood would become one of the best Mets closers that you don’t remember !
The New York Mets purchased the contract of reserve outfielder, Gil Flores from the California Angels on July 28, 1978.
The New York Mets traded outfielder ( and clubhouse cancer), Bobby Bonilla and minor league pitcher, Jimmy Williams to the Baltimore Orioles for5 tool out fielding prospect, Alex Ochoa and outfielder, Damon Buford on July 28, 1995. I think it is safe to say both team ended up being winners, the Mets got rid of the septic Bonilla, while the Orioles got that big bat that Bobby Bo provided.
New York Mets traded utility infielder, Melvin Mora, reserve third baseman, Mike Kinkade, and minor league pitching prospects, Pat Gorman and Lesli Brea to the Baltimore Orioles for shortstop, Mike Bordick on July 28, 2000. The Mets gave up such a big package for Bordick because then shortstop, Rey Ordonez had fractured his leg during a game. Many people felt that Mora was the best in house alternative, but the Mets front office spearheaded by then general manager, Steve Phillips, felt that Bordick was the better option. Needless to say Phillips was wrong and Bordick was unspectacular in his brief stint with the Mets. He ended up re-signing with the Orioles after the season had ended.
The New York Mets traded pitcher, Paul Wilson and reserve Jason Tyner to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for outfielder, Bubba Trammell and middle reliever, Rick White on July 28, 2000. It was sad to see Wilson go, he was possible the member of ” Generation K” with the best stuff. But unfortunately a shoulder injury stunted his progression . Both Trammell and White turned out to be key pieces that helped propel the Mets into the post season that year.
The New York Mets traded middle reliever, Graeme Lloyd to the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitcher, Jeremy Hill on July 28, 2003.

look at it this way. The Mets got back into the race (well, climbed back up over .500) with the help of Beltran being hot for a while. But, also without Wright.
So in effect, right now, Wright is replacing Beltran. And if he keeps hitting like this, they could easily stay at about the same pace.

I commented before the season started I’d thought they’d better their record from last year and I’m sticking to that. Baring more injuries, I don’t think they should have a problem finishing above .500.
If the Braves would lose a game or two we could have gained some ground on the WC race this week.

How is he dumping salary, they are paying most of Beltron’s contract? KROD was about getting rid of the worst ever player option.

Very psyched about the trade, we should do more! This team can absolutely finish above .500 especially now that the pressure to win is off of Pelf’s shoulders and now he will pitch well.

I know that Sandy’s focus was Beltran and Wheeler, but man, I would have loved to see Rasmus come to the Mets for Pelf and some others. Trust me in that I’m not slamming Sandy for not getting Rasmus, cause I’m giddy we saw him get Wheeler, but had Sandy been in play and gotten Rasmus, I’d argue he could walk on water, and not just when it’s frozen!
