Last Night on the Farm – 8/1/11

Zack Wheeler struggled in his Mets debut, and the rest of the farm didn’t fair much better:

Buffalo 9, Rochester 6

Not a lot of pitching in the ROC last night. Chris Schwinden managed to get through 6 innings, but gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 6. John Lujan helped with 1.1 innings, striking out 3. Taylor Tankersley tried to give the game away in the 9th, but Dale Thayer came in to get the final out of the game. At the plate, Mike Baxter tripled twice. Josh Satin was 2-4 with 3 RBI’s. Fernando Martinez and Nick Evans both homered. Since returning from the DL, Martinez has been removed late in the game in favor of Jesus Feliciano, presumably for defensive purposes or pinch running; not a good sign.

Dunedin 9, St. Lucie 1 (7 innings)

This one was finished early because of rain, but it was over long before that as Zack Wheeler gave up 3 runs in the first inning. Wheeler completed 4 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and striking out 4. Wheeler has a reputation for being wild, but didn’t walk anybody. Erik Niesen didn’t help matters giving up 5 more runs and got bailed out by the rain before he could get out of the 7th. The Lucies managed just 4 hits, including a Pedro Zapata triple and a Wilmer Flores RBI double.

Augusta 4, Savannah 3

Angel Cuan pitched well enough to get the win, lasting for 6.2 giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, but Ronny Morla gave up 2 in the 8th, which gave the game away. Luis Nieves had 3 hits and 2 RBI’s, but none of the Gnats heavy hitters did much.

Vermont 1, Brooklyn 0

Jeffrey Walters suffered the hard luck loss, giving up just a single run on 7 hits in 4.2 innings. T.J. Chism faced 8 batters, walked 1 and struck out 6. All the Cyclones could muster on offense was 4 singles and a Chase Greene double.

Bluefield 4, Kingsport 3

Miller Diaz pitched well enough to win, giving up 1 run on 5 hits in 5 innings, striking out 4, but the bullpen gave the game away as soon as Diaz exited. The K-Mets racked up 15 hits, but could only get 3 runs out of it. Greg Pron and Jeffrey Glenn had 3 hits each. Camden Maron, Yucarybert De La Cruz, and Dustin Lawley all had 2 hits; Maron hit a solo homerun.

GCL Mets 4, GCL Astros 3 (13 innings)

Erik Goeddel made his 3rd rehab start, pitching 3 shutout innings, and allowing just 2 hits. Roy Merritt made his 3rd rehab appearance and gave up 3 unearned runs on 2 hits and a walk. Julian Hilario, Matthew Budgell, and Beck Wheeler all pitched 3 shutout innings, combining for 1 hit allowed and 13 strikeouts. Jeyckol De Leon singled home Eudy Pina with the winning run in the bottom of the 13th. De Leon, Dimas Ponce, and Jorge Rivero had 2 hits each.

Fernando up to .254.  The realization is setting in that he will not be the Mets right fielder next year.  Out of options after this season it seems safe to say that he probably takes a spot on the team’s bench unless he somehow pumps up his trade value the rest of the way.

There has to be some second tier team out there willing to trade for him.  Unless you can 100% commit to giving him a spot on the 25-man roster next year, you have to try to trade him.

Agreed.  The fear is that they get pennies on the dollar when F-Mart finally gets healthy and reaches his potential.

I’d say those odds are slim at this point but strong enough to think about just handing him Willie Harris’s roster spot.

Theoretically he can take Willie’s roster spot, but he’s not versatile or strong defensively, he doesn’t have speed, so he’s just kind of a one-dimensional bench piece.

            then how about pridie’s spot!?

          2. Bryan

That could work cause pridie doesn’t ever play, but f-mart isn’t backing up CF.
