Despite St. Lucie and Brooklyn getting rained out, it was an exciting Friday on the farm. Brandon Nimmo made his professional debut, Buffalo walked-off with a win, Jeurys Familia was outstanding, and the K-Mets got another good pitching performance and another win. Let’s take a look.
Buffalo 4, Toledo 2 (11 innings)
After a lengthy period of mediocrity Chris Schwinden returned to early-season form pitching 5.2 scoreless innings on just 4 hits, with 6 strikeouts. Five different relievers followed Schwinden to help get the extra-inning win. Val Pascucci hit the walk-off homer in the 11th. Zach Lutz homered earlier in the night; both Pascucci and Lutz had 2 hits. Jordany Valdespin was 0-5, dipping his average below the Mendoza Line.
Binghamton 10, Portland 1
Jeurys Familia let up 1 hit and 2 walks in 6 shutout innings, striking out 7. It was the second straight start that Familia was on point. He ended 2010 strong in St. Lucie and it looks like he might be doing it again in Binghamton this year. Brahaim Maldonado hit a grand slam yet again, and Allan Dykstra also homered. Eric Campbell had 3 hits, including a double. Michael Fisher, Jon Malo, and Dusty Ryan all had 2 hits.
Greenville 3, Savannah 1
Ryan Fraser gave up 3 runs in 5 innings, but he got little help from the offense. Gonzalez Germen followed with 3 shutout innings, striking out 3. The Gnats managed just 9 singles, including 2 each by Wilfredo Tovar and Rafael Fernandez.
Kingsport 3, Burlington 2
Akeel Morris was less wild, but still effective, pitching 6.1 innings with 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks, but with just 2 strikeouts. Lucas Stewart and Greg Pron both doubled, as the K-Mets found a way to score 3 runs on just 4 hits.
GCL Mets 9, GCL Nationals 7
Brandon Nimmo was the designated hitter batting second in his professional debut. He struck out in his first professional at bat and ended up going 1-6, giving him no where to go but up. The Mets fell behind 6-0 early, but 6 different guys had 2 hits each to lead the comeback and get the win, although their next loss will eliminate them from playoff contention.

I saw Familia’s line from his game come up last night while watching the Mets. Too bad that game wasn’t televised. Probably more exciting than the one at Citi I was watching…
Saw an interview after the Mets game with Nimmo. Sounds like he’s got a good head on his shoulders for an 18 year old. He stated he was glad to get the first game, and first hit out of the way. Now he can concentrate on learning the speed of the game there and getting in a comfortable groove.
