Polanco jawed with Pelfrey and Josh Thole. Some Phillies rose to the top step of their dugout. On television, Phillies broadcaster Gary Matthews- father of Gary Matthews Jr., whom the Mets released last year – called the team “crybabies.”
A while after that, a Daily News reporter saw Matthews in the hallway behind the broadcast booth.
“Tell them Sarge said it – the Mets are crybabies,” Matthews repeated to the reporter, an earnest, Jimmy Olsen-type. “That’s why they lose.”
Announcer and reporter parted, then Matthews doubled back. He closed his fists and made crying motions under his eyes.
“Make sure you have tears, like this,” he said.

Note to the Sarge – I think that your playing days ended over two decades ago, so maybe you should keep your mouth shut and let the players do the talking ! Thats what I love about these Phillies announcers, such as Matthews and Mitch ” I’d like to throw a ball behind Jose Reyes’ ear” Williams. I understand that you are a paid employee of the Phillies organization, but to make incendiary statements about another team is just wrong. I understand that you ou had three good seasons back in the early ’80′s when you were a member of the Phillies, In your 16 seasons as a major league player you were the N.L. Rookie of the year in 1973, were a one time All Star, had a career batting average of .281, and you even made it to the post season a few times. Good for you – you get a cookie – or a Tasteekake of your choosing !
The fact of the matter Sarge is that you are coming off as a homer, and in my opinion to be a broadcaster who is a homer is a person who is not to be taken seriously. I am sure that you played on your share of losing teams back when you were a player. Were you a “CRYBABY”? When you either struck out in a crucial at bat or made a error in the field that caused your team to lose did you get down on yourself ? When the Mets were kicking your ass back in the mid to late ’80′s did you cry in either your beer or on your fellow teammates shoulders ?
If you ask me Mr. Matthews I think you are bitter that the Mets cut your son – an alleged juicer whom was named on the Mitchell report. How do you feel about cheaters Garry ? How does it feel that your own flesh and blood might have taken the easy way out in order to stay in the Mjor Leagues and garnered a big contract that he didn’t deserve ?!? Was your namesake a “CRYBABY” last season when he was a member of the Mets ? Do you think he played well even though he barely batted above the Mendoza Line ?!?
Granted I’ll give you that this seasons Mets team were never going to challenge your beloved Phillies ( or are you partial to the Giants, Braves Cubs- you know the other teams you played for during your long career), but these Mets have been far and away have been anything but crybabies. They might not have the All-Star caliber pitching rotation you have, or players that like to lean into a pitch just to get on base.
This Mets team has already reached rock bottom, and in a few seasons they should be back in contention. I will pity you when your team is struggling while the Mets are doing their post game celebrating .
And one quick question – WHY ARE YOU SO CONCERNED ABOUT A FOURTH PLACE TEAM ANYWAY? Oh and by the way how is your son facing forced retirement !?!
And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
One time Mets coach from the abysmal, ’93 team, Darrell Johnson would have been 83 today(1928). He was also a scout for the Mets during the ’80′s.
One of the most unintentionally funniest members in Mets history, catcher, Clarence “Choo Choo” Coleman is 74 (1937). If you have the time Google him and you will find a very funny story about him as told by Ralph Kiner.
Reserve outfielder for the ’66 Mets, Shaun Fitzmaurice is 69 (1942) .
Alleged P.E.D cheat, and all around scrubby outfielder for last seasons Mets team, Gary Matthews Jr is 37 (1974).
One of the best middle relievers we have ever had, Pedro Feliciano, is 35 (1976). It is a shame that Pedro was shelved due to a shoulder issue this year, but how could the Yankees not see that coming ? The Mets used and abused Pedro in his final three seasons as a Met, and at his age he was bound to break down.
The New York Mets signed free agent back up first baseman, Brian Buchanan on August 25, 2004.
The New York Mets traded closer, Billy Wagner to the Boston Red Sox for AAAA outfielder, Chris Carter and minor leaguer, Eddie Lora on August 25, 2009. If this wasn’t strictly done as a salary dump, then I don’t know what is! I still to this day don’t understand why Omar Minaya and ownership didn’t just wait until the end of the season to let Wagner walk. We all know that Billy would have refused arbitration and the Mets would have gotten a second first round draft pick along with a compensatory pick during the sandwich round !
I have been sent exclusive photos of Mo Vaughn in a compromising position!!!
It looks as though Mo wants to be the fat lady !!!!!
